Infrastructure as Interface: Thinking the Urban and the High-speed Railway Station: Italian Case-studies

2013

The recent launching in Italy of a number of large scale urban operations centered around High Speed Railway (HSR) stations has added a wealth of examples and themes to the overall European picture; these go to make up a global point of reference for other countries that are, in this period, undertaking the construction of their own HSR networks. Above and beyond the territorial questions often linked to the issue, further research investigating the architectural aspect of these operations would be highly relevant, but is rather lacking. Instead, we shall be focusing on current HSR stations in Italy, such as Turin Porta Susa, Florence Belfiore and Rome Tiburtina, and comparing them briefly,…

TRAFFIC FLOW HYPOTHETICAL MODELLING FOR AIR QUALITY IMPROVEMENT AND PLANNING PURPOSES

2019

The main emphasis of this research was to describe air pollution level and dispersion in a typical street canyon (Valdemara Street in Riga (Latvia) city centre), afterward to postulate potential development scenarios and perform modelling in order to understand the influence on air pollution level. For this purpose special mathematical model was used - Operational Street Pollution Model (OSPM), which was developed by the National Environmental Research Institute in Denmark. Following development scenarios were tested: (1) realistic environmentally friendly - decrease of traffic flow by 50 %, as according to street interviews about 36 - 50 % of drivers are ready to change driving habits from…

Valuing Freight Transport Time using Transport Demand Modelling: A Bibliographical Review

2011

The value of time for freight transport is of major importance in infrastructure-related cost–benefit analysis and yet its study has been largely neglected when compared with its passenger counterpart. In fact, one of the attributes that could decide the profitability of a project is how much can be saved if freight vehicles use new infrastructure. Despite being the primary benefit of most investments in transport infrastructure, researchers have not yet reached agreement over either the size or the nature of the values of time that should be used when evaluating projects. This article provides a review of the estimation of freight value of time through transport demand modelling and extant…

New mobility strategies for the development of tourism in Sicily

2012

Tourism and Transport is a well established and inseparable pair. An areas can increase the tourism in potentially own economy. This requires suitable accommodation and adequate transportation system. A positive synergy effects are induced to increase of the site. Transport is an important growth area for tourism and as a result. A better functioning of transport facilitates access to sites, decreases the cost of transport and increases tourist flows. In Sicily there are a wealth of artistic, archaeological and natural sites, generating a tourist flows during the year. Despite this, the network of connections and services is precarious. Residents and visitors are inaccessible to certain geo…

Communal Transportation: Challenges for Largescale Routing Heuristics

2007

In this report we review the central transportation logistics problems arising in the communal sector, using information gathered from several large communes in Finland and previous literature. Most of the communal transportation problems can be modelled as different variants of the vehicle routing problem. The basic features of the problems are described, modelled and analyzed, and the relevant previous research on the topics is reviewed. In addition, some possible new solution strategies are suggested.

Towards efficient inductive synthesis: Rapid construction of local regularities

2006

Given several input/output examples of some function we can state the problem: what is the “simplest” function which complies with these examples. This problem is well studied and is known to be very hard in the general case. In this paper we address a special case of the problem, when the target function can be expressed as a simple composition of known functions. We propose a new inductive synthesis algorithm for this case and show that it is efficient enough to synthesize complex geometry formulas.

Development of International Freight Transit in Latvia

2013

Abstract International freight transit is transportation of goods through third countries which are neither senders or consumers of the transported freight. International freight transit provides the use of transport infrastructure capacities and the development of transport infrastructure in Latvia, especially in seaports and railways. In Latvia approximately 97% of all transported freight carried by railway is international freight transit. The turnover of Latvia's seaports is approximately 90% international freight transit transport. This paper describes comparative position of Latvia in Logistics Performance Index and assesses international competitiveness of Latvia's international frei…
