Contactless generation of cavitation in high temperature liquid metals and its impact on particle dispersion in solidified iron and steel samples

Abstract A recently developed method for the contactless magnetic generation of cavitation is demonstrated for high-melting-point metals. The approach is based on the floating-zone technique, which is truly contactless and crucible-free as it uses electromagnetic forces. Using this method, ultra-high-temperature ceramic particles, such as TiN, TiB2 and TiC, are admixed in liquid iron and 316L steel. The dispersion and particle refinement caused by cavitation treatment during melting and solidification are investigated. Effect of position and force tool control in friction stir welding of dissimilar aluminum-steel lap joints for automotive applications

Widespread use of aluminum alloys for the fabrication of car body parts is conditional to the use of appropriate welding methods, especially if dissimilar welding must be performed with automotive steel grades. Pipeline Monitoring Architecture Based on Observability and Controllability Analysis

Recently many techniques with different applicability have been developed for damage detection in the pipeline. The pipeline system is designed as a distributed parameter system, where the state space of the distributed parameter system has infinite dimension. This paper is dedicated to the problem of observability as well as controllability analysis in the pipeline systems. Some theorems are presented in order to test the observability and controllability of the system. Computing the rank of the controllability and observability matrix is carried out using Matlab.

Kinematic synthesis of a new 3D printing solution

Low-cost production of metal parts is a challenge nowadays in the Additive Manufacturing world and new methods are being developed. The MIM technique is an innovative approach for 3D printing. This method requires a machine with suitable kinematics capable of generating the adequate movements. The object of this article is the kinematic synthesis of a 5Dofs robot, based on two PKM machines, for additive manufacturing in order to compliant with the requirements of this new technology. Robot kinematics have been optimized by genetic algorithm in order to cover the required workspace and the design of the robot and outline of the control system are also given.

On the estimation of the fatigue cycle distribution from spectral density data

This paper deals with the fatigue life prediction of components and structures subjected to random fatigue, i.e. to cyclic loading whose amplitude varies in an essentially random manner. In particular, this study concentrates on the general problem of directly relating fatigue cycle distribution to the power spectral density (PSD) by means of closed-form expressions that avoid expensive digital simulations of the stress process. On the complete interface development of Al/Cu magnetic pulse welding via experimental characterizations and multiphysics numerical simulations

Abstract A complex Al/Cu magnetic pulse welding interface is systematically investigated using experimental characterizations and numerical simulations. A Coupled electromagnetic-mechanical simulation is proposed to compute the impact velocity and impact angle along the entire interface. This model allows to further understand the formation mechanism of various interface characteristics during MPW. The results revealed that the impact velocity gradually decreases in conjunction with the gradual increase of the impact angle.
