Experimental Investigation and Finite Element Analysis of Dynamic Behavior and Damage of Glass/Epoxy Tubular Structures

This paper presents finite element analysis (FEA) of static and dynamic tests of thick filament wound glass/epoxy tubes. The first part involves the validation of elastic properties and identification of damage initiation and its development in dynamic tests. The results of FEA of the dynamic tests without damage appeared satisfactory. An impact model, including material property degradation, is used for damage prediction. The simulated damage is compared with that obtained experimentally. The sizes of projected and cumulated surfaces are of the same order of magnitude as in the experimental measurements.
An Improved Thermal Lamination Model for Analysis of Heat Transfer in Composite Structures

A new thermal lamination model and its associated finite element model are presented for analysis of heat transfer in laminated composite structures. The form of the present model closely resembles that of recent zig-zag sublaminate structural laminate theories. The through-thickness distribution of temperature is assumed to vary linearly within each ply, and continuity of transverse flux at ply interfaces is enforced analytically. Thus, the number of computational degrees-offreedom (DOFs) is made independent of the number of plies in the sublaminate. Abstract In this paper, an analytical expression was derived for the prediction of shear strength of slender reinforced concrete (RC) beams with stirrups. Failure occurring in B and D regions of the beam was considered. An expression derived for the shear strength of the B region was based on a modified constant angle truss model. Tensile behaviour of patch-repaired CFRP laminates

The present study examines the tensile behaviour of composite structures repaired by bonding external patches. Various patches of different stacking sequences placed on both sides of the parent plate were considered. Damage development and the failure process of the repaired plates were analyzed and a parent plate fracture model has been proposed. Optimised patch repairs were calculated by finite element modelling. It was found that high stress concentration along the longitudinal edges of circular patches and/or at the transverse edges of the hole leads to early damage initiation in the parent plate. The cells of polymer foams are usually extended in the foam rise direction, causing a geometrical anisotropy, the degree of which, characterized by the cell aspect ratio R, depends on foam density and production method. Such elongated cell shape translates into anisotropy of the mechanical properties of foams. Abstract In this work, the fretting behaviour of pure Ti plates laser treated with a Nd:YAG pulsed laser was compared to that of untreated Ti plates. Fretting tests were done at room temperature without lubrication. The contact geometry was a cylinder (bearing steel) on a plane. The sorption of water into the paperboard exposes a container to reversible and irreversible deformations under relative humidity variations. In this study, an elasto-plastic material model is used to demonstrate how through-thickness dry solids content gradients can generate permanent in-plane strains in paperboard. The measurements presented in this paper indicate that in consecutive loading-unloading cycles, the yield stress either remains roughly constant or decreases, and an additional permanent set of strain is obtained even when the maximum tension of repetitions stays constant. The peak stress method (PSM) is an engineering, finite element (FE)-oriented method to rapidly estimate the notch stress intensity factors by using the singular linear elastic peak stresses calculated from coarse FE analyses.
