Polarization transfer in the 4HeH reaction
2001
Abstract Polarization transfer in the 4He ( e → ,e′ p → ) 3 H reaction at a Q2 of 0.4 (GeV/c)2 was measured at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The ratio of the transverse to the longitudinal polarization components of the ejected protons was compared with the same ratio for elastic ep scattering. The results are consistent with a recent fully relativistic calculation which includes a predicted medium modification of the proton form factor based on a quark–meson coupling model.
Coherent γ-production in (p,p′) reactions in nuclei in the Δ resonance region
1998
Abstract We study the process of coherent photon production in nuclei induced by the (p,p′) reaction around the Δ excitation region. The cross sections are about 200 times smaller than the corresponding ones for coherent pion production but within measurable range with present machines. The cross section selects the transverse part of the NN→NΔ transition, while coherent pion production selects the longitudinal one. The reactions are complementary and show different aspects of Δh propagation through the nucleus which are discussed here.
Transverse laser cooling of a radio-frequency bunched ion beam in the storage ring TSR
1996
Abstract We report on the observation of the indirect transverse laser cooling effect in a radio-frequency bunched beam of 7.3 MeV 9 Be + ions, stored in the Heidelberg Test Storage Ring and subject to direct longitudinal laser cooling. This bunched scheme offers particular advantages for producing ultracold beams with unprecedented phase-space densities.
Longitudinal, transverse-plus and transverse-minus W-bosons in unpolarized top quark decays at O(alpha_s)
2000
We consider the O(alpha_s) radiative corrections to the decay of an unpolarized top quark into a bottom quark and a W-gauge boson where the helicities of the W are specified as longitudinal, transverse-plus and transverse-minus. The O(alpha_s) radiative corrections lower the normalized longitudinal rate Gamma_L/Gamma by 1.06% and increase the the normalized transverse-minus rate Gamma_-/Gamma by 2.17%. We find that the normalized transverse-plus rate Gamma_+/Gamma, which vanishes at the Born term level for m_b->0, receives radiative correction contributions at the sub-percent level. We discuss m_b!=0 effects for the Born term and the alpha_s-contributions but find these to be small. Our …

Bremsstrahlung and the underlying event structure
1990
Abstract In this talk we address the problem of the structure of the underlying event and its dependence upon a specific trigger. Generally speaking, events selected without any special trigger, like the minimum bias events, need not have the same characteristics as those selected by the jet trigger or through the W and Z-boson selection criteria. We use perturbative QCD in order to unfold part of the structure. In particular we concentrate on the contribution to the underlying event structure which comes from initial state bremsstrahlung. In the present paper we discuss the relationship between transverse momentum and transverse energy for W and Z-boson production both in the low as well a…
Analysis of transverse momentum correlations in hadronic Z decays
1999
In a recent paper, evidence was presented for a significant, positive correlation between the total transverse momenta of particles on opposite hemispheres of hadronic events. A new, model independent analysis of the data has been made. Two components can be distinguished in the correlation, and quantitative estimates of each are given. The results form a significant test of Monte Carlo models and some of the physics behind them. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
Precise pion electroproduction in thep(e, e? ?+)n reaction at W=1125 MeV
1996
The reactione+p →> e+π ++n at c.m. energyW=1125MeV and momentum transfer Q2=0.117GeV2/c2 has been measured. The transverse and longitudinal structure functions have been separated by varying the polarization of the virtual photon (Rosenbluth plot) with a 3 to 4% error. In addition the longitudinal-transverse interference term has been determined measuring the right-left asymmetry with an accuracy of 3%. The experimental data are compared to model calculations, and the sensitivity of the results to the axial and pion formfactors is discussed.
Bonn potential and electron-deuteron scattering at high momentum transfer
1990
Deuteron electrodisintegration d(e,e') near threshold is calculated using the various energy-independent Bonn potential versions. At high momentum transfer they lead to rather different results compared to other realistic NN potentials. This can only be partly explained by a different D-state admixture strength. The potential effect is particularly strong for the transverse form factor, but is also present for the longitudinal one. The latter is influenced in a similar way as the longitudinal part of the elastic deuteron form factor A(${\mathit{q}}^{2}$) which we have considered in addition.
Comment on the Feasibility of Antiproton Polarization in LEAR by Means of the Transverse Stern-Gerlach Effect
1984
The study of polarization effects in nucleon-nucleon scattering experiments has increased considerably our understanding of the Nuclear forces. Correspondingly it can be expected that the study of polarization phenomena in antiproton-nucleon scattering will also help us to resolve — at least partly — the complicated spin structure of the antiproton-nucleon amplitudes.
