Measurement of the higher-order anisotropic flow coefficients for identified hadrons in Au + Au collisions atsNN=200GeV

2016

Measurements of the anisotropic flow coefficients v2{Ψ2},v3{Ψ3},v4{Ψ4}, and v4{Ψ2} for identified particles (π±,K±, and p+p) at midrapidity, obtained relative to the event planes Ψm at forward rapidities in Au + Au collisions at sNN=200GeV, are presented as a function of collision centrality and particle transverse momenta pT. The vn coefficients show characteristic patterns consistent with hydrodynamical expansion of the matter produced in the collisions. For each harmonic n, a modified valence quark-number Nq scaling [plotting vn{Ψm}/(Nq)n/2 versus transverse kinetic energies (KET)/Nq] is observed to yield a single curve for all the measured particle species for a broad range of KET. A si…

Vestibular adaptation to centrifugation does not transfer across planes of head rotation

2008

Out-of-plane head movements performed during fast rotation produce non-compensatory nystagmus, sensations of illusory motion, and often motion sickness. Adaptation to this cross-coupled Coriolis stimulus has previously been demonstrated for head turns made in the yaw (transverse) plane of motion, during supine head-on-axis rotation. An open question, however, is if adaptation to head movements in one plane of motion transfers to head movements performed in a new, unpracticed plane of motion. Evidence of transfer would imply the brain builds up a generalized model of the vestibular sensory-motor system, instead of learning a variety of individual input/output relations separately. To investi…

Light bullets and dynamic pattern formation in nonlinear dissipative systems

2005

In the search for suitable new media for the propagation of (3+1) D optical light bullets, we show that nonlinear dissipation provides interesting possibilities. Using the complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation model with localized initial conditions, we are able to observe stable light bullet propagation or higher-order transverse pattern formation. The type of evolution depends on the model parameters. ©2005 Optical Society of America.

Experimental studies of a single flexibly-mounted rod in a triangular rod bundle in cross-flow

2018

Experiments on flow-induced vibrations using a closely-packed triangular rod array with a pitch-todiameter ratio of 1.1 in water cross-flow was carried out at Paul Scherrer Institute. The bundle consists of 21 row of five rods in each one. Single flexibly-mounted test rod (TR) is in the fourth row in an otherwise fixed array. The test rod can freely move in the transverse and in-line direction. Two accelerometer sensors were attached at both ends of the TR to measure the rod response on the fluid flow. The effect of flow rate on the stability of the flexibly-mounted TR has been analysed. During experiments, it reveals a set of conditions and tendencies for the flow-induced vibration in the …

Beam Energy Scan of Specific Heat Through Temperature Fluctuations in Heavy Ion Collisions

2016

Temperature fluctuations may have two distinct origins, first, quantum fluctuations that are initial state fluctuations, and second, thermodynamical fluctuations. We discuss a method of extracting the thermodynamic temperature from the mean transverse momentum of pions, by using controllable parameters such as centrality of the system, and range of the transverse momenta. Event-by-event fluctuations in global temperature over a large phase space provide the specific heat of the system. We present Beam Energy Scan of specific heat from data, AMPT and HRG model prediction. Experimental results from NA49, STAR, PHENIX, PHOBOS and ALICE are combined to obtain the specific heat as a function of …

Stability of Axially Moving Plates

2019

This chapter focuses on the stability analysis of axially moving materials, in the context of two-dimensional models. There are many similarities with the classical stability analysis of structures, such as the buckling analysis of plates. However, the presence of axial motion introduces inertial effects to the model. We consider the stability of an axially moving elastic isotropic plate travelling at a constant velocity between two supports and experiencing small transverse vibrations. We investigate the stability of the plate using an analytical approach. We also look at elastic orthotropic plates, and an elastic isotropic plate subjected to an axial tension distribution that varies in th…

Bloch surface waves engineering in one-dimensional photonic crystals with a chiral cap layer

2019

We investigate the localization properties of surface waves created at the interface between a truncated 1D photonic crystal and homogeneous medium in the presence of a chiral cap layer using the transfer matrix method. The numerical results show that the interface can support surface waves with both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations. We demonstrate that the surface waves can be engineered by varying the chirality parameter of the cap layer, which plays an important role in controlling and localization of surface states. It is shown that the effect of a chirality parameter on surface waves with transverse electric polarization is more remarkable compared with surface…

Measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries forJ/ψproduction in polarizedp+pcollisions ats=200  GeV

2010

We report the first measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries in J/psi production from transversely polarized p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV with data taken by the PHENIX experiment in 2006 and 2008. The measurement was performed over the rapidity ranges 1.2 < vertical bar y vertical bar < 2.2 and vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.35 for transverse momenta up to 6 GeV/c. J/psi production at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider is dominated by processes involving initial-state gluons, and transverse single-spin asymmetries of the J/psi can provide access to gluon dynamics within the nucleon. Such asymmetries may also shed light on the long-standing question in QCD of the J/psi pro…

Measurement of the normalized Z/γ∗→μ+μ− transverse momentum distribution in pp¯ collisions at s=1.96 TeV

2010

We present a new measurement of the Z/gamma* transverse momentum distribution in the range 0-330 GeV, in proton-antiproton collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV. The measurement uses 0.97 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity recorded by the D0 experiment and is the first using the Z/gamma* -> mu(+)mu(-) + X channel at this center-of-mass energy. This is also the first measurement of the Z/gamma* transverse momentum distribution that presents the result at the level of particles entering the detector, minimizing dependence on theoretical models. As any momentum of the Z/gamma* in the plane transverse to the incoming beams must be balanced by some recoiling system, primarily the result of QCD radiation …
