Controlled insertion of one and two atoms into a high-finesse optical cavity

2007

Entangled quantum states have applications as a model system for strongly correlated many body states, as resource for quantum information processing and as a tool for enhanced precision measurements. Deterministic entanglement schemes create the desired state by transferring the system under the action of a carefully chosen Hamiltonian into an entangled state. The system must follow a unitary evolution, and uncontrolled parasitic interactions with the environment leading to spontaneous decay or partial measurements of the state have to be avoided. The paper present an experiment, on loading a chosen number of Doppler-cooled caesium atoms from a magneto-optical trap into a standing wave opt…

Mo̸ller polarimetry with polarized atomic hydrogen at MESA

2013

A new generation of parity violation (PV) electron scattering experiments are planned to be carried out at the Institut fur Kernphysik in Mainz. These experiments will be performed at low energies of 100-200 MeV using the new accelerator MESA (Mainz Energy recovering Superconducting Accelerator). One of the main challenges of such experiments is to achieve an accuracy in beam polarization measurements that must be below 0.5%. This very high accuracy can be reached using polarized atomic hydrogen gas, stored in an ultra-cold magnetic trap, as the target for electron beam polarimetry based on Mo/ller scattering. Electron spin-polarized atomic hydrogen can be stored at high densities of 1016 c…

Octupolar-Excitation Penning-Trap Mass Spectrometry forQ-Value Measurement of Double-Electron Capture inEr164

2011

The theory of octupolar-excitation ion-cyclotron-resonance mass spectrometry is presented which predicts an increase of up to several orders of magnitude in resolving power under certain conditions. The new method has been applied for a direct Penning-trap mass-ratio determination of the $^{164}\mathrm{Er}\mathrm{\text{\ensuremath{-}}}^{164}\mathrm{Dy}$ mass doublet. $^{164}\mathrm{Er}$ is a candidate for the search for neutrinoless double-electron capture. However, the measured ${Q}_{ϵϵ}$ value of 25.07(12) keV results in a half-life of ${10}^{30}$ years for a 1 eV Majorana-neutrino mass.

Ordered helium trapping and bonding in compressed arsenolite: Synthesis ofAs4O6·2He

2016

Compression of arsenolite has been studied from a joint experimental and theoretical point of view. Experiments on this molecular solid at high pressures with different pressure-transmitting media have been interpreted thanks to state-of-the-art ab initio calculations. Our results confirm arsenolite as one of the most compressible minerals and provide evidence for ordered helium trapping above 3 GPa between adamantane-type $\mathrm{A}{\mathrm{s}}_{4}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ cages. Our calculations indicate that, at relatively small pressures, helium establishes rather localized structural bonds with arsenic forming a compound with stoichiometry $\mathrm{A}{\mathrm{s}}_{4}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}\ifmmode\c…

The key reactions in Stellar helium burning: 12C(α,γ)16O and 22Ne(α,n)25Mg

2003

Abstract The excitation functions of 12C(α,γ)16O and 22Ne(α,n)25Mg have been determined with a yet unequaled experimental sensitivity of 10−11 b. From γ-angular distributions the SE1-and SE2-factors for 12C(α,γ)16O have been deduced and extrapolated into the range of helium burning temperatures using the R-matrix method. An improved reaction rate has been calculated: NA〈σν〉=(7.9±2.5)x10−15cm3(mols)−1 at T9 = 0.2. For a more precise extrapolation the excitation function has to be measured with better statistics. Therefore a new experiment on 12C(α,γ)16O with a better suited setup has been started recently. The accuracy of the 22Ne(α,n)25Mg reaction rate could be improved considerably compare…

Lifetime Studies in Traps

2009

A knowledge of the radiative lifetimes of excited atomic states is of wide interest, not only in the detailed understanding of intrinsic atomic structure and dynamics but also in the fields of plasma diagnostics and astrophysics. The transition rates of intercombination and electric-dipole forbidden lines are of particular importance, since their low transition probability gives them long optical depths in plasmas and astrophysical environments.

Diffractive optics for processing ultrashort light pulses

2011

In this work we combine, in principle, two disjoint optical fields, diffractive optics and ultrashort light radiation. This combination allows us to manipulate in a very unconventional manner femtosecond pulses and, on the other hand, to implement a set of novel applications. In our case we have focused our attention on material processing and biophotonics applications.

Analytical Evaluation of the Temporal Focal Shift for Arbitrary Pulse Shapes

2004

In this letter, we analyze the propagation of linearly chirped arbitrary-shaped light pulses through a parabolic dispersive medium to derive an analytical formula of assessing the location of the transverse plane where the pulse root-mean-square width is minimum. Closed form expressions for compressed pulses, which are independent of the input pulse shape, are demonstrated. In this way, we demonstrate that both the relative temporal focal shift and the minimum pulsewidth are solely determined by two factors, the temporal equivalent of the Fresnel number of the geometry and the pulse quality factor, i.e., the temporal analogue of the spatial M/sup 2/ beam quality factor. Some examples are di…

Simultaneous readout of two charge qubits

2006

We consider a system of two solid state charge qubits, coupled to a single read-out device, consisting of a single-electron transistor (SET). The conductance of each tunnel junction is influenced by its neighboring qubit, and thus the current through the transistor is determined by the qubits' state. The full counting statistics of the electrons passing the transistor is calculated, and we discuss qubit dephasing, as well as the quantum efficiency of the readout. The current measurement is then compared to readout using real-time detection of the SET island's charge state. For the latter method we show that the quantum efficiency is always unity. Comparing the two methods a simple geometric…
