Two-dimensional spectroscopy for the study of ion Coulomb crystals

Ion Coulomb crystals are currently establishing themselves as a highly controllable test-bed for mesoscopic systems of statistical mechanics. The detailed experimental interrogation of the dynamics of these crystals however remains an experimental challenge. In this work, we show how to extend the concepts of multi-dimensional nonlinear spectroscopy to the study of the dynamics of ion Coulomb crystals. The scheme we present can be realized with state-of-the-art technology and gives direct access to the dynamics, revealing nonlinear couplings even in the presence of thermal excitations. Emission-Line Intensity Ratios in F[CLC]e[/CLC] [CSC]xvii[/CSC] Observed with a Microcalorimeter on an Electron Beam Ion Trap

We report new observations of emission line intensity ratios of Fe XVII under controlled experimental conditions, using the National Institute of Standards and Technology electron beam ion trap (EBIT) with a microcalorimeter detector. We compare our observations with collisional-radiative models using atomic data computed in distorted wave and R-matrix approximations, which follow the transfer of the polarization of level populations through radiative cascades. Our results for the intensity ratio of the 2p6 1S0-2p53d 1P1 15.014 A line to the 2p6 1S0-2p53d 3D1 15.265 A line are 2.94 ± 0.18 and 2.50 ± 0.13 at beam energies of 900 and 1250 eV, respectively. Transmission Microscopy with Nanometer Resolution Using a Deterministic Single Ion Source.

We realize a single particle microscope by using deterministically extracted laser-cooled ^{40}Ca^{+} ions from a Paul trap as probe particles for transmission imaging. We demonstrate focusing of the ions to a spot size of 5.8±1.0  nm and a minimum two-sample deviation of the beam position of 1.5 nm in the focal plane. The deterministic source, even when used in combination with an imperfect detector, gives rise to a fivefold increase in the signal-to-noise ratio as compared with conventional Poissonian sources. Computer simulation of models for the structural glass transition

In order to test theoretical concepts on the glass transition, we investigate several models of glassy materials by means of Monte Carlo (MC) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) computer simulations. It is shown that also simplified models exhibit a glass transition which is in qualitative agreement with experiment and that thus such models are useful to study this phenomenon. However, the glass transition temperture as well as the structural properties of the frozen-in glassy phase depend strongly on the cooling history, and the extrapolation to the limit of infinitely slow cooling velocity is nontrivial, which makes the identification of the (possible) underlying equilibrium transition very diffi…

Single Ion Thermal Wave Packet Analyzed Via Time-Of-Flight Detection

Abstract A single 40Ca ion is confined in the harmonic potential of a Paul trap and cooled to a temperature of a few mK, with a wave packet of sub-μm spatial and sub-m s−1 velocity uncertainty. Deterministically extracted from the Paul trap, the single ion is propagating over a distance of 0.27 m and detected. By engineering the ion extraction process on the initial wave packet, theoretically modeling the ion trajectories, and studying experimentally the time-of-flight distribution, we directly infer the state of the previously trapped ion. A Novel Method for the Measurement of Half-Lives and Decay Branching Ratios of Exotic Nuclei

A novel method for simultaneous measurement of masses, Q-values, isomer excitation energies, half-lives and decay branching ratios of exotic nuclei has been demonstrated. The method includes first use of a stopping cell as an ion trap, combining containment of precursors and decay-recoils for variable durations in a cryogenic stopping cell (CSC), and afterwards the identification and counting of them by a multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS). Penning-trap mass measurements of neutron-deficient Rb and Sr isotopes

Abstract The Penning-trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP installed at the on-line mass separator ISOLDE 2 at CERN has been used for mass determination of 75–87 Rb and 78–83,87 Sr. Ions are captured in a Penning trap and their cyclotron frequency ω c = ( q m )B in the trapping field B is measured. Ratios of these frequencies lead to the determination of the atomic mass of these isotopes. A resolving power of typically m Δm = 10 6 and an accuracy of δm ≈10 keV is obtained. The mass of 78 Sr is measured for the first time and, in most cases, the mass values of the other isotopes are significantly improved. The experimental masses are compared with theoretical predictions.

High-precision masses of neutron-deficient rubidium isotopes using a Penning trap mass spectrometer

The atomic masses of the neutron-deficient radioactive rubidium isotopes $^{74-77,79,80,83}$Rb have been measured with the Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP. Using the time-of-flight cyclotron resonance technique, relative mass uncertainties ranging from $1.6 \times 10^{-8}$ to $5.6 \times 10^{-8}$ were achieved. In all cases, the mass precision was significantly improved as compared with the prior Atomic-Mass Evaluation; no significant deviations from the literature values were observed. The exotic nuclide $^{74}$Rb with a half-life of only 65 ms, is the shortest-lived nuclide on which a high-precision mass measurement in a Penning trap has been carried out. Astrophysics and spectroscopy with microcalorimeters on an electron beam ion trap

The importance of the combination of electron beam ion trap (EBIT) spectroscopy with X-ray microcalorimeters in the field of astrophysics was discussed. X-ray astronomy involves heavily charged ion instruments , especially EBIT, to obtain improved quality atomic data. In this regard, the research program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which uses X-ray spectroscopic methods to study plasma and atomic physics, was also discussed.

Systematic studies of the accuracy of the Penning trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP

Abstract Measurements to quantify the mass-dependent systematic effect and the residual uncertainty of the JYFLTRAP setup have been performed with carbon-cluster ions. The primary quantities reported in this work are a mass-dependent uncertainty of σ m ( r ) / r = ( 7.8 ± 0.3 × 10 - 10 / u ) × Δ m and a residual uncertainty of σ res ( r ) / r = 1.2 × 10 - 8 for the JYFLTRAP mass spectrometer.
