Theory of the elliptical Penning trap

2008

Abstract An ideal “Elliptical Penning Trap” is an ideal cylindrically symmetric Penning trap with an additional electrostatic quadrupolar potential ∝ κ ( x 2 − y 2 ) . This configuration is here investigated for arbitrary strength κ of the additional potential. Aside from the decoupled axial motion the system is characterized by a generalized cyclotron and a generalized magnetron frequency. While the former depends only weakly on κ , the magnetron frequency decreases rapidly with increasing κ , vanishing at a maximum value κ max ⁡ which represents the stability limit for the magnetron motion. Magnetron orbits are elliptical, with their numerical excentricity tending toward unity as κ approa…

Gli strumenti del rinnovamento urbano di Trapani

2012

The Hot Bands of Methane between 5 and 10 μm

1996

Experimental line intensities of 1727 transitions arising from nine hot bands in the pentad-dyad system of methane are fitted to first and second order using the effective dipole moment expansion in the polyad scheme. The observed bands are nu3 - nu2, nu3 - nu4, nu1 - nu2, nu1 - nu4, 2nu4 - nu4, nu2 + nu4 - nu2, nu2 + nu4 - nu4, 2nu2 - nu2, and 2nu2 - nu4, and the intensities are obtained from long-path spectra recorded with the Fourier transform spectrometer located at Kitt Peak National Observatory. For the second order model, some of the 27 intensity parameters are not linearly independent, and so two methods (extrapolation and effective parameters) are proposed to model the intensities …

Gone before its known? Camera-trapping shows alarming levels of putative hybrids in the wildcat (Felis silvestris) population of the Gargano National…

2022

Abstract The European wildcat is a small carnivore widespread across Europe and hybridization with the domestic cat is one of the major threats to wildcats. We estimate the population density of wild-living cats (both wildcats and putative hybrids based on pelage) in the Gargano National Park (Southern Italy). We sampled 20 stations for 540 camera days. We obtained 23 images from 17 detections at 10 cameras, and we identified 10 individuals (6 wildcats and 4 putative hybrids). Population density was estimated at 0.34 ± 0.15 SE wild-living cats/km2. The proportion of putative hybrids indicates an alarming hybridization for this population.

SPARC is a new myeloid-derived suppressor cell marker licensing suppressive activities

2019

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) are well-known key negative regulators of the immune response during tumor growth, however scattered is the knowledge of their capacity to influence and adapt to the different tumor microenvironments and of the markers that identify those capacities. Here we show that the secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) identifies in both human and mouse MDSC with immune suppressive capacity and pro-tumoral activities including the induction of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and angiogenesis. In mice the genetic deletion of SPARC reduced MDSC immune suppression and reverted EMT. Sparc−/− MDSC were less suppressive overall and the granu…

Tristetraprolin regulation of interleukin-22 production

2015

AbstractInterleukin (IL)-22 is a STAT3-activating cytokine displaying characteristic AU-rich elements (ARE) in the 3′-untranslated region (3′-UTR) of its mRNA. This architecture suggests gene regulation by modulation of mRNA stability. Since related cytokines undergo post-transcriptional regulation by ARE-binding tristetraprolin (TTP), the role of this destabilizing protein in IL-22 production was investigated. Herein, we demonstrate that TTP-deficient mice display augmented serum IL-22. Likewise, IL-22 mRNA was enhanced in TTP-deficient splenocytes and isolated primary T cells. A pivotal role for TTP is underscored by an extended IL-22 mRNA half-life detectable in TTP-deficient T cells. Lu…

Cooperation of Two mRNA-Binding Proteins Drives Metabolic Adaptation to Iron Deficiency

2008

Summary Iron (Fe) is an essential cofactor for a wide range of cellular processes. We have previously demonstrated in yeast that Cth2 is expressed during Fe deficiency and promotes degradation of a battery of mRNAs leading to reprogramming of Fe-dependent metabolism and Fe storage. We report here that the Cth2-homologous protein Cth1 is transiently expressed during Fe deprivation and participates in the response to Fe deficiency through the degradation of mRNAs primarily involved in mitochondrially localized activities including respiration and amino acid biosynthesis. In parallel, wild-type cells, but not cth1 Δ cth2 Δ cells, accumulate mRNAs encoding proteins that function in glucose impo…

Evaluation of mycotoxins and their metabolites in human breast milk using liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry

2014

Humans can be exposed to mycotoxins through the food chain. Mycotoxins are mainly found as contaminants in food and could be subsequently excreted via biological fluids such as urine or human breast milk in native or metabolised form. Since breast milk is usually supposed as the only food for new-borns, the occurrence of mycotoxins in thirty-five human milk samples was evaluated by a newly developed method based on QuEChERS extraction and UHPLC-HRMS detection. The method described here allows the detection of target mycotoxins in order to determine the quality of this initial feeding. The method has been fully validated, with recoveries ranging from 64% to 93% and relative standard deviatio…
