A geostatistical approach for dynamic life tables: The effect of mortality on remaining lifetime and annuities

2010

Dynamic life tables arise as an alternative to the standard (static) life table, with the aim of incorporating the evolution of mortality over time. The parametric model introduced by Lee and Carter in 1992 for projected mortality rates in the US is one of the most outstanding and has been used a great deal since then. Different versions of the model have been developed but all of them, together with other parametric models, consider the observed mortality rates as independent observations. This is a difficult hypothesis to justify when looking at the graph of the residuals obtained with any of these methods. Methods of adjustment and prediction based on geostatistical techniques which expl…

Anisotropy-Induced Effects in the Dynamics of an Ion Confined in a Two-Dimensional Paul Trap

2006

We investigate the role of anisotropy in the dynamics of a single trapped ion interacting with two orthogonal laser beams, considering how it modifies a scheme for the generation of Schrödinger cat states and the so called parity effect in two-dimensional isotropic Paul traps. We find that anisotropy gives rise to a richer class for the generated states and to a larger number of observables sensitive to the parity of the number of excitation of the vibrational motion of the ion.

Trapping of Continuous-Time Quantum walks on Erdos-Renyi graphs

2011

We consider the coherent exciton transport, modeled by continuous-time quantum walks, on Erd\"{o}s-R\'{e}ny graphs in the presence of a random distribution of traps. The role of trap concentration and of the substrate dilution is deepened showing that, at long times and for intermediate degree of dilution, the survival probability typically decays exponentially with a (average) decay rate which depends non monotonically on the graph connectivity; when the degree of dilution is either very low or very high, stationary states, not affected by traps, get more likely giving rise to a survival probability decaying to a finite value. Both these features constitute a qualitative difference with re…

Brownian motion in trapping enclosures: Steep potential wells, bistable wells and false bistability of induced Feynman-Kac (well) potentials

2019

We investigate signatures of convergence for a sequence of diffusion processes on a line, in conservative force fields stemming from superharmonic potentials $U(x)\sim x^m$, $m=2n \geq 2$. This is paralleled by a transformation of each $m$-th diffusion generator $L = D\Delta + b(x)\nabla $, and likewise the related Fokker-Planck operator $L^*= D\Delta - \nabla [b(x)\, \cdot]$, into the affiliated Schr\"{o}dinger one $\hat{H}= - D\Delta + {\cal{V}}(x)$. Upon a proper adjustment of operator domains, the dynamics is set by semigroups $\exp(tL)$, $\exp(tL_*)$ and $\exp(-t\hat{H})$, with $t \geq 0$. The Feynman-Kac integral kernel of $\exp(-t\hat{H})$ is the major building block of the relaxatio…

Spatial Mark-Recapture Method in the Estimation of Crayfish Population Size

1995

The mark-recapture method is considered for estimation of population size of slowly moving animals like crayfish. The Petersen type estimator for closed population is generalized for situations where recaptures are spatially dependent between the capture sites, and its variance approximation is derived using point processes as models for the population. The method of quadratic forms is suggested to be used as variance estimator. Finally, a trapping design is proposed where onc trap at recapture is replaced by four adjacent traps. A simulation experiment is performed to explain the robusticity of the new trapping design against movements of animals.

Test of the Latent Dimension of a Spatial Blind Source Separation Model

2024

We assume a spatial blind source separation model in which the observed multivariate spatial data is a linear mixture of latent spatially uncorrelated random fields containing a number of pure white noise components. We propose a test on the number of white noise components and obtain the asymptotic distribution of its statistic for a general domain. We also demonstrate how computations can be facilitated in the case of gridded observation locations. Based on this test, we obtain a consistent estimator of the true dimension. Simulation studies and an environmental application in the Supplemental Material demonstrate that our test is at least comparable to and often outperforms bootstrap-bas…

Tetrapterosides A and B, two new oleanane-type saponins fromTetrapleura tetraptera

2009

From the stem bark of Tetrapleura tetraptera, two new oleanane-type saponins, tetrapteroside A 3-O-{6-O-[(2E,6S)-2,6-dimethyl-6-hydroxyocta-2,7-dienoyl]-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 3)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)]-beta-D-glucopyranosyl}-3,27-dihydroxyoleanolic acid (1), and tetrapteroside B 3-O-{ beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)-6-O-[(E)-feruloyl]-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 3)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)]-beta-D-glucopyranosyl}-3,27-dihydroxyoleanolic acid (2), were isolated. Further extractions from the roots led to the isolation of four known oleanane-type saponins. Their structures …

Effects of steric encumbrance of iridium( iii ) complex core on performance of solution-processed organic light emitting diodes

2020

Iridium(iii) complexes are the most frequently applied commercialized green and red emitters for organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays. Throughout years a significant research effort has been devoted to modify these compounds, in order to make them suitable for cost-effective solution-processing techniques, such as inkjet printing. To achieve this, the inherent tendency of the complex molecules to form poorly emissive aggregates needs to be suppressed. In many cases this has been achieved by an encapsulation of the iridium(iii) complex core with dendritic structures, composed of either passive or charge-transporting fragments. In order to validate this approach, we acquired three str…

The 5/2,3/2 Spin Admixture in the Chloroiron(III) Derivative of the Sterically Crowded 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-Octaethyl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin

1999

Despite similar ring deformations in solution and in the solid state, the chloroiron(III) derivative of 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethyl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin ([FeCl(oetpp)], shown schematically) prepared in this study exhibits only a very weak quantum-mechanical admixture of spin S=3/2 (only 4-10 %) with spin S=5/2. In contrast, for the variety of [FeCl(oetpp)] studied earlier by other researchers a 40 % contribution of the S=3/2 state was found.
