Functionnalized Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors for the Detection of Hazardous Gases

International audience; In this work, we show the capabilities of Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) devices to probe the properties of gas sensitive materials for the manufacturing of hazardous gas sensors. The great capabilities of cobalt corroles for the trapping of carbon monoxide (CO) were exploited to produce selective sensors. These corroles were deposited on SAW delay lines surfaces and then exposed to carbon monoxide (CO) in standard conditions. Concentrations of a few hundreds of ppb were measured emphasizing the interest of such sensors for the detection of CO. The Sea Urchin sns Insulator Blocks CMV Enhancer following Integration in Human Cells

Insulators are a new class of genetic elements that attenuate enhancer function directionally. Previously, we characterized in sea urchin a 265-bp-long insulator, termed sns. To test insulator activity following stable integration in human cells, we placed sns between the CMV enhancer and a tk promoter up-stream of a GFP transgene of plasmid or retroviral vectors. In contrast to controls, cells transfected or transduced with insulated constructs displayed a barely detectable fluorescence. The volatile components of the flowerheads of Centaurea calcitrapa L. (C.c.) and Centaurea sphaerocephala L. ssp. sphaerocephala (C.s.) were obtained by hydrodistillation and identified by GC and GC–MS. Altogether 96 components were identified, 66 in C. calcitrapa and 68 in C. spaerocephala, mostly fatty acids (32.8%, C.c. and 44.2%, C.s.) and hydrocarbons (32.3%, C.c. and 15.9%, C.s.). 9,12-Octadecadienoic acid (15.8%, C.c.) and hexadecanoic acid (30.7%, C.s.) were the most abundant fatty acids; tricosane (8.0%, C.c.) and heptacosane (4.9%, C.s.) were the main hydrocarbons.
