Spatial separation of atomic states in a laser cooled ion crystal

A laser cooled ion crystal containing several hundred Ca+ ions has been stored in a linear Paul trap. Cooling is provided by a red detund laser at the 4S1/2−4P1/2 resonance transition. A second laser serves for repumping of those ions which decay from the excited 4P1/2 level to the metastable 3D3/2 state. The ions can be additionally excited by a third laser to a long lived metastable 3D5/2 energy level which decouples them from the cooling laser radiation. The light pressure acting upon the laser cooled ions pushes them into the direction of the laser beam. Geant4-aided Quantum State Selective Decay Spectroscopy of 213 Ra

Utilizing the excellent mass resolving power of SHIPTRAP and the charged-particle-g multicoincidence setup TASISpec, the decay path of the 213Ra ground state can be exclusively studied. Based on virtual experiments with Geant4 it is possible to refine the a-branching ratios of the 213Ra ground state as well as g-ray branching ratios in the 209Rn daughter. The present study provides a proof of concept where clean quantum-state selective particle-g decay spectroscopy is used in conjunction with detailed Geant4 Monte-Carlo simulations to gain insight into nuclear structure properties.
A size dependent discontinuous decay rate for the exciton emission in ZnO quantum dots

The time resolved UV-fluorescence in ZnO quantum dots has been investigated using femtosecond laser spectroscopy. The measurements were performed as a function of particle size for particles between 3 and 7 nm in diameter, which are in the quantum confined regime. A red shift in the fluorescence maximum is seen while increasing the particle size, which correlates with the shift in band gap due to quantum confinement. The energy difference between the UV-fluorescence and the band gap does, however, increase for the smaller particles. Abstract The interconversion of the radial motional modes in a Penning trap (magnetron and cyclotron modes) by an external quadrupolar rf-field with a frequency near the true cyclotron frequency ω c plays an important role in the measurement cycle of Penning trap mass spectrometry. Ions to be measured are prepared in a state of magnetron motion which is then resonantly converted into cyclotron motion. The data analysis is usually carried out under the assumption that the initial motional state of the ions has been a pure magnetron state. Abstract Using a time-of-flight technique, different transport mechanisms, deep trapping, multiple shallow trapping and Gaussian transport, can be observed in the different temperature and phase regions of the liquidcrystalline (LC) photoconductor hexapentyloxytriphenylene (HPT). Transient photocurrents and carrier mobilities for various temperatures, electric fields, and sample histories were examined. The ideal intrinsic Gaussian transport, observed for holes in the mesophase, puts HPT into a new class of highmobility materials with both hole mobilities on the order of 1.10−3cm2/Vs and a steplike current decay. The sea urchin early histone repeating unit contains one copy of each of the five histone genes whose coordinate expression during development is regulated by gene-specific elements. To learn how within the histone repeating unit a gene-specific activator can be prevented to communicate with the heterologous promoters, we searched for domain boundaries by using the enhancer blocking assay. An investigation of the photoexcited triplet state of chlorophyll (Chl) b has been carried out by means of electron nuclear double resonance, both in a frozen organic solvent and in a protein environment provided by the water-soluble chlorophyll protein of Lepidium virginicum. Density functional theory calculations have allowed the complete assignment of the observed hyperfine couplings corresponding to the methine protons and the methyl groups, leading to a complete picture of the spin density distribution of the triplet state in the tetrapyrrole macrocycle.
