Evolving to the Impatience Trap: The Example of the Farmer-Sheriff Game

2011

The literature on the evolution of impatience, focusing on one-person decision problems, finds that evolutionary forces favor the more patient individuals. This paper shows that in the context of a game, this is not necessarily the case. In particular, it offers a two-population example where evolutionary forces favor impatience in one group while favoring patience in the other. Moreover, not only evolution but also efficiency may prefer impatient individuals. In our example, it is efficient for one population to evolve impatience and for the other to develop patience. Yet, evolutionary forces move the wrong populations.

Deterministic Single-Ion Implantation of Rare-Earth Ions for Nanometer-Resolution Color-Center Generation

2019

Single dopant atoms or dopant-related defect centers in a solid state matrix provide an attractive platform for quantum simulation of topological states, for quantum computing and communication, due to their potential to realize a scalable architecture compatible with electronic and photonic integrated circuits. The production of such quantum devices calls for deterministic single atom doping techniques because conventional stochastic doping techniques are cannot deliver appropriate architectures. Here, we present the fabrication of arrays of praseodymium color centers in YAG substrates, using a deterministic source of single laser-cooled Pr$^+$ ions. The beam of single Pr$^+$ ions is extra…

Microtriches of tetraphyllidean metacestodes from Western Mediterranean striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba)

2005

The tegumental structures of two types of tetraphyllidean plerocercoids and two types of merocercoids (Phyllobothrium delphini and Monorygma grimaldii) from Mediterranean striped dolphins, Stenella coeruleoalba, are described for the first time using scanning electron microscopy. The tegument of all of the specimens was fully covered with microtriches. Four basic types were found: filitriches, blade-like spinitriches of different sizes and shapes, cone-shaped spinitriches (with two parallel small projections of equal length at the apex), and crowned cylindrical spinitriches (with 6–7 small papillae forming a crown at the apex); the two latter types are newly described. The two types of pler…

Time resolved photofragmentation of Au $_{n}^{+}$ and Ag $_{n}^{+}$ clusters (n = 9, 21)

1997

Gold and silver cluster ions were produced by laser vaporization and stored in a Penning trap. After mass selection the cluster sizes of interest were illuminated by a laser pulse and electronically excited. Photoabsorption cross sections and fragmentation patterns were measured for photon energies of 2.3 eV to 5.2 eV. Unimolecular dissociation was observed time resolved on a microsecond to millisecond scale. Dissociation energies were deduced from the measured life times.

Estimate the mean electricity consumption curve by survey and take auxiliary information into account

2012

In this thesis, we are interested in estimating the mean electricity consumption curve. Since the study variable is functional and storage capacities are limited or transmission cost are high survey sampling techniques are interesting alternatives to signal compression techniques. We extend, in this functional framework, estimation methods that take into account available auxiliary information and that can improve the accuracy of the Horvitz-Thompson estimator of the mean trajectory. The first approach uses the auxiliary information at the estimation stage, the mean curve is estimated using model-assisted estimators with functional linear regression models. The second method involves the au…

Size- and Structure-Selective Noncovalent Recognition of Saccharides by Tetraethyl and Tetraphenyl Resorcinarenes in the Gas Phase

2008

The noncovalent complexation of tetraethyl and tetraphenyl resorcinarenes with mono-, di-, and oligosaccharides was studied with negative-polarization electrospray ionization quadrupole ion trap and electrospray ionization Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass-spectrometric analysis. The saccharides formed 1:1 complexes with deprotonated resorcinarenes, which exhibited clear size and structure selectivity in their complexation. In the case of the monosaccharides, hexoses formed much more abundant and kinetically stable complexes than pentoses or deoxyhexoses. A comparison of the mono-, di-, and oligosaccharides revealed that both the relative abundance and stability of the complexe…

Fe- but not Mg-protophorphyrin IX binds to a transmembrane b-type cytochrome.

2013

Transmembrane b-type cytochromes, which are crucially involved in electron transfer chains, bind one or more heme (Fe-protoporphyrin IX) molecules non-covalently. Similarly, chlorophylls are typically also non-covalently bound by several membrane integral polypeptides involved in photosynthesis. While both, chlorophyll and heme, are tetrapyrrole macrocycles, they have different substituents at the tetrapyrrole ring moiety. Furthermore, the central metal ion is Mg(2+) in chlorophyll and Fe(2+/3+) in heme. As heme and chlorophyll a have similar structures and might both be ligated by two histidine residues of a polypeptide chain, and as the local concentration of chlorophyll a might be up to …

Synthesis and Self-Organization of Zinc β-(Dialkoxyphosphoryl)porphyrins in the Solid State and in Solution

2012

The first synthesis and self-organization of zinc β-phosphorylporphyrins in the solid state and in solution are reported. β-Dialkoxyphosphoryl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrins and their Zn(II) complexes have been synthesized in good yields by using Pd- and Cu-mediated carbon-phosphorous bond-forming reactions. The Cu-mediated reaction allowed to prepare the mono-β-(dialkoxyphosphoryl)porphyrins 1 Zn-3 Zn starting from the β-bromo-substituted zinc porphyrinate ZnTPPBr (TPP = tetraphenylporphyrin) and dialkyl phosphites HP(O)(OR)(2) (R = Et, iPr, nBu). The derivatives 1 Zn-3 Zn were obtained in good yields by using one to three equivalents of CuI. When the reaction was carried out in the pres…

Effect of protonation and deprotonation on the gas phase reactivity of fluorinated 1,2,4-triazines

2008

Positive and negative electrospray mass spectrometry (MS), in-time and in-space MS n experiments, high-resolution and accurate mass measurements obtained with an Orbitrap, together with density functional theory calculations have been used to study the gas-phase ion chemistry of a series of fluorinated 1,2,4-triazines. As a result of low-energy collision-induced dissociations, occurring in an ion trap and in a triple quadrupole, their protonated and deprotonated molecules show interesting features depending on the nature and structure of the precursor ions. The occurrence of elimination/hydration reactions produced by positive ions in the ion trap is noteworthy. Decompositions of deprotonat…
