Group-based intervention on attention and executive functions in the school context

2017

The objective of the study was to examine the effects of a group-based behavioural, cognitive and skills training intervention (Maltti) provided in schools for elementary school pupils with attention and executive function (EF) deficits. The treatment effects were identified by comparing an intervention group (n = 46) with a waitlist control group (n = 26). Specific effects of the intervention on behavioural deficits in attention and EF in a classroom setting as well as on academic skills were examined. Our analysis indicated that significant intervention effects could be found in the behavioural manifestation of attentional and executive skills in the classroom setting among children (n = …

Efficacy and safety of extended-release guanfacine hydrochloride in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: A randomi…

2014

AbstractGuanfacine extended-release (GXR), a selective α2A-adrenergic agonist, is a non-stimulant treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study assessed the efficacy (symptoms and function) and safety of dose-optimized GXR compared with placebo in children and adolescents with ADHD. An atomoxetine (ATX) arm was included to provide reference data against placebo. Patients (6–17 years) were randomized at baseline to dose-optimized GXR (0.05–0.12mg/kg/day – 6–12 years: 1–4mg/day; 13–17 years: 1–7mg/day), ATX (10–100mg/day) or placebo for 4 or 7 weeks. The primary efficacy measure was change from baseline in ADHD Rating Scale version IV (ADHD-RS-IV). Key secondary me…

Analysis of treatment efficacy in the GEM-CESAR trial for high-risk smoldering multiple myeloma patients: Comparison between the standard and IMWG MR…

2020

8512 Background: The GEM-CESAR trial is a potentially curative strategy for high-risk smoldering multiple myeloma (HRsMM) patients (pts) in which the primary endpoint is the achievement of sustained minimal residual disease (MRD) negativity in the bone marrow (BM) by next generation flow (NGF). The value of BM MRD assessment in MM is proven, but alternative, non-invasive methods, accurately reflecting disease burden are needed. Methods: Pts received six 4-week cycles of KRd as induction (K:36mg/m2 twice weekly, R: lenalidomide 25mg po od days 1-21 and d:dexamethasone 40mg po weekly) followed by melphalan 200mg/m2, two further cycles of KRd as consolidation and up to 2 years of Rd (R:10mg/d…

Editor's Choice - Frailty and the management of patients with acute cardiovascular disease:A position paper from the Acute Cardiovascular Care Associ…

2018

Frailty is increasingly seen among patients with acute cardiovascular disease. A combination of an ageing population, improved disease survival, treatable long-term conditions as well as a greater recognition of the syndrome has accelerated the prevalence of frailty in the modern world. Yet, this has not been matched by an expansion of research. National and international bodies have identified acute cardiovascular disease in the frail as a priority area for care and an entity that requires careful clinical decisions, but there remains a paucity of guidance on treatment efficacy and safety, and how to manage this complex group. This position paper from the Acute Cardiovascular Care Associa…

An Internet-Based Self-Help Program for the Treatment of Fear of Public Speaking: A Case Study

2008

ABSTRACT This article discusses the development of the first totally self-administered online CBT program for the treatment of a specific social phobia (fear of public speaking) called talk to me. The online program includes three parts. The assessment protocol gives the patient information about the problem, including impairment, severity, and the degree of fear and avoidance regarding the main feared situations. The structured treatment protocol ensures that the patient does not skip any steps in the treatment. The treatment protocol is a CBT program that provides exposure to the feared situation using videos of real audiences. Finally, the control protocol assesses treatment efficacy, no…

New organisation for follow-up and assessment of treatment efficacy in sleep apnoea.

2019

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a highly prevalent disease, and there is an increased demand for OSA diagnosis and treatment. However, resources are limited compared with the growing needs for OSA diagnosis and management, and alternative strategies need to be developed to optimise the OSA clinical pathway. In this review, we propose a management strategy for OSA, and in general for sleep-disordered breathing, to be implemented from diagnosis to follow-up. For this purpose, the best current options seem to be: 1) networking at different levels of care, from primary physicians to specialised sleep laboratories; and 2) use of telemedicine. Telemedicine can contribute to the improved cost-ef…

Telepsychology and Self-help: The Treatment of Fear of Public Speaking

2007

Abstract This work presents a self-help, Internet-based telepsychology program for the treatment of public speaking fears. The system is comprised of 3 parts: The assessment protocol gives the patient information about his or her problem (i.e., amount of interference it creates in his or her life, severity, degree of fear and avoidance). The system also includes a structured treatment protocol, organized into separate blocks, reflecting the patient’s progress. This ensures that the patient does not skip any steps in the treatment (something quite common in traditional self-help manuals), which provides more control over the process. The treatment protocol is a cognitive-behavioral program t…

Melanin type and concentration determination using inverse model

2011

Abnormality of melanin production causes skin pigmentation disorders. Currently, assessment of treatment efficacy (under Physician's Global Assessment framework) only refers to visual conditions of skin surface and not the condition of the underlying skin layers and pigments. Albeit researches on models and simulations of light interaction with human skin have been reported, none has been specifically developed for pigmentation analysis of melanin types - eumelanin and pheomelanin. Therefore, our research objectives are to develop image analysis of skin pigmentation for classification and quantification of eumelanin and pheomelanin pigment types in human skin. In this research, the model is…
