Online support for vulnerable consumers: a safe place?

Purpose This paper aims to examine the service experience in an online support community of consumers to understand the nature of social support and how it is experienced and enacted by vulnerable consumers. Design/methodology/approach A netnographic study was conducted to examine vulnerable consumers’ participation in an online support group for weight management. Chronic hepatitis C virus infection is an important public health problem, and the standard treatment (combination of pegylated interferon-α and ribavirin) has an effectiveness rate of only 40%-50%. Novel virus-specific drugs have recently been designed, and multiple compounds are under development. The approval for the clinical use of direct-acting antivirals in 2011 (boceprevir [BOC] and telaprevir, viral NS3 protease inhibitors) has increased recovery rates by up to 70%. Therefore, a highly effective treatment has been envisioned for the first time. This paper focuses on BOC and the implementation of new BOC-based treatment regimes.

Infection-induced chromatin modifications facilitate translocation of herpes simplex virus capsids to the inner nuclear membrane

Herpes simplex virus capsids are assembled and packaged in the nucleus and move by diffusion through the nucleoplasm to the nuclear envelope for egress. Analyzing their motion provides conclusions not only on capsid transport but also on the properties of the nuclear environment during infection. We utilized live-cell imaging and single-particle tracking to characterize capsid motion relative to the host chromatin. The data indicate that as the chromatin was marginalized toward the nuclear envelope it presented a restrictive barrier to the capsids. We have previously shown that recombinant Sendai virus (SeV) produces efficient in vivo airway epithelial gene transfer. The ability to produce therapeutic levels of circulating proteins following noninvasive gene transfer would have widespread clinical application. Here, we compared nose, lung, and skeletal muscle for the ability to produce circulating levels of the secreted mouse antiinflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 (IL10) following SeV-mediated gene transfer. They primarily concern clinical entities associated with the reactivation of herpes viruses, such as varicella zoster virus (VZV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV). The influence of tumor-necrosis-factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interleukine-1 (IL-1) and IL-3 on the in vitro reactivation frequency and replication rate of trigeminal ganglia of mice latently infected with herpes simplex virus (HSV) strain KOS was studied. It could be demonstrated that TNF-alpha and possibility GM-CSF, but not IL-1 and IL-3, enhanced the reactivation frequency and replication of HSV. Interferon alpha/beta (IFN alpha/beta) prevented reactivation and replication.

Keskitymme artikkelissamme kolmeen Suomessakin hyvin tunnettuun luovaan terapiaan: musiikki-, kuvataide- ja tanssi-liiketerapiaan. Tarkastelunäkökulmana on ilmaisu, toisin sanoen se, miten näissä terapioissa perustellaan musiikillisen, kuvallisen ja liikkeellisen ilmaisun käyttöä terapeuttisessa vuorovaikutuksessa. Luovilla terapioilla on paljon yhteistä, ja ne kaikki suhtautuvat lähestymistavan taustalla olevaan taiteeseen samantyyppisesti.
