Item Response Trees: a recommended method for analyzing categorical data in behavioral studies

2015

Behavioral data are notable for presenting challenges to their statistical analysis, often due to the difficulties in measuring behavior on a quantitative scale. Instead, a range of qualitative alternative responses is recorded. These can often be understood as the outcome of a sequence of binary decisions. For example, faced by a predator, an individual may decide to flee or stay. If it stays, it may decide to freeze or display a threat and if it displays a threat, it may choose from several alternative forms of display. Here we argue that instead of being analyzed using traditional nonparametric statistics or a series of separate analyses split by response categories, this kind of data ca…

Nazwy drzew w śląskiej toponimii

2015

The paper deals with geographical names in Silesia deriving from the names of tree species. An analysis of the names derived from appellatives, allows for a reconstruction of the categorization methods of the world, anthropological conceptualization, and a popular image of reality. Name creators choose names derived from the appellatives which are for certain reasons important and valuable for them, from the existing collection of names. For example, the following names of trees and shrubs become a productive toponymic base: oak, birch, alder; they belong to the basic categorization level and are important for the rural community due to their usable and practical significance (in constructi…

Measuring and Modelling Evaporation Losses from Wet Branches of Lemon Trees

2022

Evaporation losses of rainfall intercepted by canopies depend on many factors, including the temporal scale of observations. At the event scale, interception is a few millimetres, whereas at a larger temporal scale, the number of times that a canopy is filled by rainfall and then depleted can make the interception an important fraction of the rainfall depth. Recently, a simplified interception/evaporation model has been proposed, which considers a modified Merrian model to compute interception during wet spells and a simple power-law equation to model evaporation from wet canopy during dry spells. Modelling evaporation process at the sub hourly temporal scale required the two parameters of …

L'exposition photographique de rue. Le rapport à l'œuvre, entre relation et interaction

2009

In the very particular context (press crisis, digital revolution, photojournalism shifting towards art market), photographic exhibitions have been organized in the street, these last years. How does it build the relationship to the creation ? This article shows that this relationship comes into being gradually on the inter subjective relations ; from relationship (subject / object connection), the esthetic experience changes into interaction in the sense of the symbolic interactionism (complex process where intertwines perceptions, interpretations, mutual adaptations between the subjects themselves and between subjects and objects). The study, result of a direct observation, takes place in …

Machine learning for mortality analysis in patients with COVID-19

2020

This paper analyzes a sample of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the region of Madrid (Spain). Survival analysis, logistic regression, and machine learning techniques (both supervised and unsupervised) are applied to carry out the analysis where the endpoint variable is the reason for hospital discharge (home or deceased). The different methods applied show the importance of variables such as age, O2 saturation at Emergency Rooms (ER), and whether the patient comes from a nursing home. In addition, biclustering is used to globally analyze the patient-drug dataset, extracting segments of patients. We highlight the validity of the classifiers developed to predict the mortality, reaching…

Makroselityksistä, vakauttajavaltioista ja kapitalismista

2016

Wolfgang Streeck avaa kirjassaan Ostettua aikaa (Streeck 2016) kapitalismin ja demokratian suhdetta. Tämä on olennaista ja ajankohtaista. Taloudellisten toimijoiden kyky suojautua demokraattiselta yhdenvertaisuusperiaatteelta on kapitalismin analyysin ydinkysymyksiä.

Central limit theorem for bifurcating Markov chains under L 2 -ergodic conditions

2021

Bifurcating Markov chains (BMC) are Markov chains indexed by a full binary tree representing the evolution of a trait along a population where each individual has two children. We provide a central limit theorem for additive functionals of BMC under L 2-ergodic conditions with three different regimes. This completes the pointwise approach developed in a previous work. As application, we study the elementary case of symmetric bifurcating autoregressive process, which justify the non-trivial hypothesis considered on the kernel transition of the BMC. We illustrate in this example the phase transition observed in the fluctuations.

Genome rearrangement distances and gene order phylogeny in gamma-Proteobacteria.

2005

Genome rearrangements have been studied in 30 gamma-proteobacterial complete genomes by comparing the order of a reduced set of genes on the chromosome. This set included those genes fulfilling several characteristics, the main ones being that an ortholog was present in every genome and that none of them had been acquired by horizontal gene transfer. Genome rearrangement distances were estimated based on either the number of breakpoints or the minimal number of inversions separating two genomes. Breakpoint and inversion distances were highly correlated, indicating that inversions were the main type of rearrangement event in gamma-Proteobacteria. In general, the progressive increase in seque…

Monitoring deforestation and forest degradation linking high-resolution satellite data and field data in the context of REDD+. A case of Tanzania

2017

Protection of Trees against Lightning Strikes as a Measure to Prevent Fires and Loss of Human Life

2021

Lighting strikes have been the catalyst of massive uncontrolled fires in areas of combustible vegetation. In some regions, lightning strikes may be a relatively unusual occurrence (e.g., California), but instead they seem to have become a major contributor to the propagation of wildfires, as a byproduct of climate change. Given such unusual weather, wildfires originating from lightning are an increasing threat. In this paper, the authors discuss the withstand capability of trees against lightning and introduce a proactive approach to prevent wildfires by the deployment of tree lighting protection systems (TLPS) to protect forested areas, where deemed necessary by the tree risk assessment.
