Quantitative Analysis of Terpenic Compounds in Microsamples of Resins by Capillary Liquid Chromatography

2019

A method has been developed for the separation and quantification of terpenic compounds typically used as markers in the chemical characterization of resins based on capillary liquid chromatography coupled to UV detection. The sample treatment, separation and detection conditions have been optimized in order to analyze compounds of different polarities and volatilities in a single chromatographic run. Exposure to moderate concentrations of tropospheric ozone impairs tree stomatal response to carbon dioxide.

2011

With rising concentrations of both atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO(2)) and tropospheric ozone (O(3)), it is important to better understand the interacting effects of these two trace gases on plant physiology affecting land-atmosphere gas exchange. We investigated the effect of growth under elevated CO(2) and O(3), singly and in combination, on the primary short-term stomatal response to CO(2) concentration in paper birch at the Aspen FACE experiment. Leaves from trees grown in elevated CO(2) and/or O(3) exhibited weaker short-term responses of stomatal conductance to both an increase and a decrease in CO(2) concentration from current ambient level. The impairement of the stomatal CO(2) respo…

Space of signatures as inverse limits of Carnot groups

2021

We formalize the notion of limit of an inverse system of metric spaces with 1-Lipschitz projections having unbounded fibers. The construction is applied to the sequence of free Carnot groups of fixed rank n and increasing step. In this case, the limit space is in correspondence with the space of signatures of rectifiable paths in ℝn, as introduced by Chen. Hambly-Lyons’s result on the uniqueness of signature implies that this space is a geodesic metric tree. As a particular consequence we deduce that every path in ℝn can be approximated by projections of some geodesics in some Carnot group of rank n, giving an evidence that the complexity of sub-Riemannian geodesics increases with the step.…

Habitual street food intake and subclinical carotid atherosclerosis.

2013

Street food (SF) is defined as out-of-home food consumption, and generally consists of energy-dense meals rich in saturated fats and poor in fibers, vitamins and antioxidants. Though SF consumption may have unfavorable metabolic and cardiovascular effects, its possible association with atherosclerosis has not been considered. The association between habitual SF consumption and asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis, defined as the presence of plaques and/or increased intima-media thickness, was therefore investigated. One thousand thirty-five randomly selected adult participants without known diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases were cross-sectionally investigated in Palermo, …

Environmental and Biochemical Factors Controlling the in Vitro Emergence of Somatic Embryos in European Spindle Tree (Euonymus europaeus L)

2000

The European spindle tree (Euonymus europaeus L. Celastraceae) is a shrubby tree widely distributed in temperate regions of western European countries from the northern part of France to St. Petersburg and the western part of Russia. The Celastraceae comprises 55 genera, including at least 850 known species of trees and shrubs which are found in tropical and temperate regions. Various secondary metabolites are elaborated in the family including steroids, triterpenoids, sesquiterpene, peptide ore alkaloids. The spindle tree is commonly found in quickset hedges and small broad-leaved forests when the soil is deep, moist, clayey and chalky. The leaves are relatively small (3–4 cm long) simple …

Temporal speciation pattern in the western Mediterranean genus Tudorella P. Fischer, 1885 (Gastropoda, Pomatiidae) supports the Tyrrhenian vicariance…

2009

The land snail genus Tudorella shows a peculiar disjunct distribution around the western Mediterranean coasts. Despite high phenotypic plasticity, only two species with a disputed number of subspecific taxa are currently recognised. We delimited the species with mitochondrial (COI & 16S) and nuclear (ITS-1) markers based on the unified species concept and suggested that there are eight species in the genus, two of them currently undescribed. Applying Bayesian phylogenetic model selection, we tested four different biogeographic hypotheses that could be causal for the current distribution pattern of extant Tudorella species. A scenario involving vicariance events resulting from the repeated s…

Cellular automata and urban development simulation : a transition rules creation process based on statistical analysis

2015

National audience; Nowadays land use evolution study has become a major stake in urban planning. The main focus is to understand the way in which land use evolves across time and to understand processes that take place. This understanding would allow to plan urban developments based on a knowledge as complete as possible covering as many fields as possible (i.e. urban planning, politics, sociology, etc.). Simulation tools can be used to merge and display different points of view and stakes from different stakeholders (Parrott & Meyer, 2012).

Computational identification of chemical compounds with potential anti-Chagas activity using a classification tree

2021

Chagas disease is endemic to 21 Latin American countries and is a great public health problem in that region. Current chemotherapy remains unsatisfactory; consequently the need to search for new drugs persists. Here we present a new approach to identify novel compounds with potential anti-chagasic action. A large dataset of 584 compounds, obtained from the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative, was selected to develop the computational model. Dragon software was used to calculate the molecular descriptors and WEKA software to obtain the classification tree. The best model shows accuracy greater than 93.4% for the training set; the tree was also validated using a 10-fold cross-validation p…

Combination of molecular data support the existence of three main lineages in the phylogeny of aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and the basal position o…

2010

Abstract The first molecular studies on the phylogeny of aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) bumped into a striking lack of phylogenetic structure for taxa levels higher than tribe, probably as a consequence of the rapid adaptive radiation that this group of insects went through during the Late Cretaceous. Here we present a new attempt to infer the relationships between major aphid taxa by the separate and combined analysis of two nuclear sequences (the long-wavelength opsin gene and the elongation factor 1α gene) and two mitochondrial sequences (the genes encoding the subunit 6 of the F-ATPase and the subunit II of the cytochrome oxidase). Our results confirm previous results with the grouping o…

The adiabatic strictly-correlated-electrons functional : kernel and exact properties

2016

We investigate a number of formal properties of the adiabatic strictly-correlated electrons (SCE) functional, relevant for time-dependent potentials and for kernels in linear response time-dependent density functional theory. Among the former, we focus on the compliance to constraints of exact many-body theories, such as the generalised translational invariance and the zero-force theorem. Within the latter, we derive an analytical expression for the adiabatic SCE Hartree exchange-correlation kernel in one dimensional systems, and we compute it numerically for a variety of model densities. We analyse the non-local features of this kernel, particularly the ones that are relevant in tackling p…
