A novel method based on augmented Markov vector process for the time-variant extreme value distribution of stochastic dynamical systems enforced by P…
2020
Abstract The probability density function (PDF) of the time-variant extreme value process for structural responses is of great importance. Poisson white noise excitation occurs widely in practical engineering problems. The extreme value distribution of the response of systems excited by Poisson white noise processes is still not yet readily available. For this purpose, in the present paper, a novel method based on the augmented Markov vector process for the PDF of the time-variant extreme value process for a Poisson white noise driven dynamical system is proposed. Specifically, the augmented Markov vector (AMV) process is constructed by combining the extreme value process and its underlying…
Cultural institutions as agents of urban and community regeneration in the (post-)pandemic city. The case of the «Laboratorio Zen Insieme» in Palermo
2022
Although all cities in the world have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, its impacts on the territories, yet to be understood, are unevenly distributed, revealing extremely varied imbalances depending on the places. However, it is clear that the virus and its variants have aggravated pre-existing socio-spatial inequalities, creating new ones and bringing attention back to those implications between space, planning, public health and citizenship that are at the origins of contemporary urbanism. In a reference framework in which the crisis is globalized but unequal and in the absence of a welfare system capable of responding to the urgencies of the most marginalized social contexts and g…

Immune checkpoint inhibitors are widely used as treatment for an increasing number of solid tumours. Nevertheless, the lack of predictive biomarker represents a limitation across several cancer types. During the last years, the possibility to dynamically study tumour evolution through circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) in plasma has opened novel possibility in evaluating disease status and therapeutic response, especially in localised disease to predict the possibility of relapse. However, the specific opportunities for application in the context of immunotherapy remain to be clarified.1 In an article recently published in Cancer Discovery by Zhang et al ,2 a comprehensive analysis of ctDNA dat…
PRODIGE 59-DURIGAST trial: A randomised phase II study evaluating FOLFIRI + Durvalumab ± Tremelimumab in second-line of patients with advanced gastri…
2021
International audience; Gastric or gastro-oesophageal junction (GEJ) adenocarcinomas present poor overall survival (OS). First-line chemotherapy regimen for patients with HER2-negative tumours is based on a doublet or triplet of fluoropyrimidine plus platinum salt ± taxane. Second-line chemotherapy (Docetaxel or Irinotecan) improves OS which nonetheless remains poor (around 5 months). The first results of immune checkpoint inhibitors (anti-PD-1) combined with chemotherapy in metastatic gastric and GEJ cancers were discordant in recent phase III trials. Data on dual-blockade (anti-PD-L1 or anti-PD-1 plus anti-CTLA-4) plus chemotherapy are lacking. DURIGAST is a randomised, multicenter, non-c…
Role of Immunotherapy in the Management of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Current Standards and Future Directions
2020
The multikinase inhibitor sorafenib was the only approved systemic therapy in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) for about a decade. In recent years, the number of approved agents has increased significantly as a result of a number of positive phase iii clinical trials. Lenvatinib as a first-line treatment, and regorafenib, cabozantinib, and ramucirumab in the second-line setting are now approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency. In phase II studies, immunotherapy with nivolumab and monotherapy using pembrolizumab yielded impressive results for overall survival in therapy-naïve and pretreated patients, leading to the accelerated approval …

Three-dimensional characterization of extreme ultraviolet mask blank defects by interference contrast photoemission electron microscopy
2008
A photoemission electron microscope based on a new contrast mechanism "interference contrast" is applied to characterize extreme ultraviolet lithography mask blank defects. Inspection results show that positioning of interference destructive condition (node of standing wave field) on surface of multilayer in the local region of a phase defect is necessary to obtain best visibility of the defect on mask blank. A comparative experiment reveals superiority of the interference contrast photoemission electron microscope (Extreme UV illumination) over a topographic contrast one (UV illumination with Hg discharge lamp) in detecting extreme ultraviolet mask blank phase defects. A depth-resolved det…
A composite study on the structure and formation of ozone miniholes and minihighs over central Europe
2005
[1] Two different mechanisms have been proposed to be important for the formation of extreme total ozone events in mid-latitudes, so-called miniholes: (A) far-range meridional transport of air masses from regions with different climatological ozone mixing ratios, and (B) (local) adiabatic vertical displacement of isentropes. Here, the relative importance of these two mechanisms is studied using two different ozone profile reconstruction techniques for all miniholes and minihighs (events with anomalously high ozone) during the time period 1980–1989 over Switzerland. Composites for the two types of events of their vertical potential vorticity (PV) reveal a vertical dipole structure of PV anom…
