Characterizing extreme points of polyhedra an extension of a result by Wolfgang Bühler
1982
This paper reconsiders the characterization given by Buhler admitting convex polyhedra of probability distributions on a finite or countable set which are given by systems of linear inequalities more complex than those considered before.
Dissipative rogue wave generation in multiple-pulsing mode-locked fiber laser
2013
Following the first experimental observation of a new mechanism leading to optical rogue wave (RW) formation briefly reported in Lecaplain et al (2012 Phys. Rev. Lett. 108 233901), we provide an extensive study of the experimental conditions under which these RWs can be detected. RWs originate from the nonlinear interactions of bunched chaotic pulses that propagate in a fiber laser cavity, and manifest as rare events of high optical intensity. The crucial influence of the electrical detection bandwidth is illustrated. We also clarify the observation of RWs with respect to other pulsating regimes, such as Q-switching instability, that also lead to L-shaped probability distribution functions.…
Phytoplankton in extreme environments: importance and consequences of habitat permanency
2020
AbstractThere is hardly any sunshine exposed surface on this Earth, be it water or terrain, which would not support some biota. Still, many habitats offer harsh conditions requiring specialized physiological adaptations to survive. These environments are referred to as extremes; often inhabited by extremophilic organisms. In this review, characteristic species and assemblage properties of phytoplankton inhabiting extreme environments (especially lakes and pools where planktic life is potentially possible and independently of their origin) in terms of alkalinity, acidity, DOC, salinity, temperature, light and mixing regime will be outlined. Lakes characterized by more than a single extreme a…
Pathophysiological Responses to a Record-Breaking Multi-hour Underwater Endurance Performance: A Case Study
2021
The “Endless Diving Project-Step 36” took place in the harbor waters of the town of Maratea in Italy in September 2014. The goal of the project was an attempt by an experienced male diver, equipped with a wet 7-mm suit and a normal gas tank, to set the world record-breaking of nonstop underwater performance. We studied inflammatory, hematological, and endocrine responses during the extreme condition of the attempt. Venous blood samples were collected at baseline, the day before the attempt; immediately after the return from underwater; then at Day 1, Day 4, and Day 12; and later at Month 1 and Month 41 of follow-up. We found that there was an increase in the content of blood neutrophils, mo…
Tratamiento jurídico de una enfermedad social. Los trastornos de la conducta alimentaria (TCA)
2018
The boundless increase of people suffering from an Eating Disorder (ED), makes necessary to develop measures related to other factors, in order to overcome the ones characterized of being strictly sanitary. The disease has become a social and cultural phenomenon. The exaltation of the cult to the body, with the stereotype of the extreme thinness linked with beauty and success is causing that, particularly young people, try to achieve an image which, in many cases, can jeopardize their health, that is the reason why the rearrangement of values has become an objective of paramount importance. Therefore, the fight against this social illness requires legal actions in order to prevent it from g…
X-Raying the Dark Side of Venus - Scatter from Venus Magnetotail?
2016
This work analyzes the X-ray, EUV and UV emission apparently coming from the Earth-facing (dark) side of Venus as observed with Hinode/XRT and SDO/AIA during a transit across the solar disk occurred in 2012. We have measured significant X-Ray, EUV and UV flux from Venus dark side. As a check we have also analyzed a Mercury transit across the solar disk, observed with Hinode/XRT in 2006. We have used the latest version of the Hinode/XRT Point Spread Function (PSF) to deconvolve Venus and Mercury X-ray images, in order to remove possible instrumental scattering. Even after deconvolution, the flux from Venus shadow remains significant while in the case of Mercury it becomes negligible. Since s…
Monitoring seasonal changes in microbial populations of spruce forest soil of the Northern Temperate Zone
2012
Soil microbial populations in the Northern Temperate Zone have been poorly studied in comparison with extreme environments. The aim of the work was to study the seasonal changes in the microbial populations of spruce forest soil of the Northern Temperate Zone using classical methods of microbiology and molecular biology. Upper horizons in two Picea abies stands on sod- podzolic and illuvial humus podzol soil were analysed. Sampling was done monthly over a period of twelve months (May 2009-April 2010). Microbial communities in both experimental plots showed different responses to the analysed environmental factors. In the sod-podzolic soil only the fungal DNA amount was significantly higher …
Implementing a Negative Income Tax. Net Cost, Poverty and Inequality Effects
2019
The main aim of this paper is to propose a financially viable alternative to the current Spanish system of social protection: A Negative Income Tax (NIT) unifying in a single mechanism the system of public benefits and income tax. We analyse the main characteristics of the NIT and simulate several NIT proposals for Spain, using the Living Conditions Survey. These proposals are distinct in that they do not suppose an additional cost in the tax-benefit system. The results of our simulations indicate a radical improvement in the indicators of poverty and inequality, especially extreme poverty, and also a redistribution of income from the elderly to families with children.
Regularized extreme learning machine for regression problems
2011
Extreme learning machine (ELM) is a new learning algorithm for single-hidden layer feedforward networks (SLFNs) proposed by Huang et al. [1]. Its main advantage is the lower computational cost, which is especially relevant when dealing with many patterns defined in a high-dimensional space. This paper proposes an algorithm for pruning ELM networks by using regularized regression methods, thus obtaining a suitable number of the hidden nodes in the network architecture. Beginning from an initial large number of hidden nodes, irrelevant nodes are then pruned using ridge regression, elastic net and lasso methods; hence, the architectural design of ELM network can be automated. Empirical studies…
