With the aim to assess the possible influence of the carbon variations on the benthic communities across the Triassic Jurassic boundary we have carried out sedimentological, biostratigraphic and stable isotope studies on an about 220 m thick peritidal section cropping out in Northwestern Sicily. The subtidal facies of the lower and middle part of this succession show the common occurrence of large and thick megalodontids and a benthic foraminiferal assemblage with Triasina hantkeni and Aulotuortids that supports a Rhaetian age. Abstract The Upper Triassic strata that crops out along the northern slope of Monte Sparagio, in the Custonaci “marble” district in northwestern Sicily, show an extensive development of dissolution cavities with a very variable shape and dimensions. Several different types of dissolution morphologies can be differentiated from microkarst to giant caverns. The cavities are filled up by polychrome silts or calcite cements or, in the larger caverns, by collapse breccias. Seismically-induced soft-sediment deformation structures in Upper Triassic deepwater carbonates (Central Sicily)

We describe soft-sediment deformation structures into the Upper Triassic cherty limestone outcropping in the Pizzo Lupo section (Central Sicily, Italy), pertaining to the deep-water palaeodomain of the Southern Tethyan margin. In the study section, mainly consisting of thin-bedded mudstone/marl alternations with bedded chert intercalations, some lithofacies have been separated on the basis of the abundance of the calcium carbonate/clay content and the overall textural features. In the wake of the Mesozoic, the Early Triassic (~251.95 Ma) corresponds to the aftermath of the most severe mass extinction of the Phanerozoic: the end-Permian crisis, when life was nearly obliterated (e.g., 90% of marine species disappeared). Consequences of this mass extinction are thought to have prevailed for several millions of years, implying a delayed recovery lasting the whole Early Triassic, if not more. Several paradigms have been established and associated to a delayed biotic recovery scenario expected to have resulted from harsh and deleterious paleoenvironments. Hypercalcified sponges from the Upper Triassic (Norian-Rhaetian) reefs of Sicily

The sponge-dominated Upper Triassic (Norian-Rhaetian) reefs of Sicily yielded the most abundant hypercalcified sponge taxa compared with other time equivalent reefs in the world. Chambered sponges (“Sphinctozoa”) are the most abundant group among the hypercalcified sponges. Capitosaurs were the largest and homogeneous group of Triassic temnospondyl amphibians with cosmopolitan distribution. However, their interrelationships are debated.
