Comparative analysis of architectures for monitoring cloud computing infrastructures

The lack of control over the cloud resources is one of the main disadvantages associated to cloud computing. The design of efficient architectures for monitoring such resources can help to overcome this problem. This contribution describes a complete set of architectures for monitoring cloud computing infrastructures, and provides a taxonomy of them. The architectures are described in detail, compared among them, and analysed in terms of performance, scalability, usage of resources, and security capabilities. Complexity analysis of spectrum access strategies with channel aggregation in CR networks

Cognitive radio has been introduced to increase spectrum utilization efficiency. To further improve bandwidth utilization of cognitive radio users, channel aggregation (CA) techniques can be adopted for spectrum access. In this paper, we analyze the complexity of three CA strategies, in terms of required amount of handshakes for channel adaptation due to primary and secondary user activities. Continuous time Markov chain models are developed to evaluate the total number of handshakes required per unit time by different CA strategies and the analytical results are validated by simulations. The node-depth encoding

The node-depth encoding has elements from direct and indirect encoding for trees which encodes trees by storing the depth of nodes in a list. Node-depth encoding applies specific search operators that is a typical characteristic for direct encodings. An investigation into the bias of the initialization process and the mutation operators of the node-depth encoding shows that the initialization process has a bias to solutions with small depths and diameters, and a bias towards stars. Exploring parallel capabilities of an innovative numerical method for recovering image velocity vectors field

In this paper an efficient method devoted to estimate the velocity vectors field is investigated. The method is based on a quasi-interpolant operator and involves a large amount of computation. The operations characterizing the computational scheme are ideal for parallel processing because they are local, regular and repetitive. Therefore, the spatial parallelism of the process is studied to rapidly proceed in the computation on distributed multiprocessor systems. The process has shown to be synchronous, with good task balancing and requiring a small amount of data transfer.

Ring Dupin cyclides are non-spherical algebraic surfaces of degree four that can be defined as the image by inversion of a ring torus. They are interesting in geometric modeling because: (1) they have several families of circles embedded on them: parallel, meridian, and Yvon-Villarceau circles, and (2) they are characterized by one parametric equation and two equivalent implicit ones, allowing for better flexibility and easiness of use by adopting one representation or the other, according to the best suitability for a particular application. Improving computation efficiency using input and architecture features for a virtual screening application

Virtual screening is an early stage of the drug discovery process that selects the most promising candidates. In the urgent computing scenario it is critical to find a solution in a short time frame. In this paper, we focus on a real-world virtual screening application to evaluate out-of-kernel optimizations, that consider input and architecture features to improve the computation efficiency on GPU. Experiment results on a modern supercomputer node show that we can almost double the performance. Moreover, we implemented the optimization using SYCL and it provides a consistent benefit with the CUDA optimization.
