Use of decellularized tracheas for airways engineering

Background/Objective: Tracheal stenosis produces serious dyspnea. In some cases, a defective correction or timely intervention can lead to the death of the patient. The Hospital Clinico Universitario de Valencia is a reference hospital for the treatment of patients with airway problems exhibiting complex tracheal stenosis. Surgery is limited to a maximum length of 6-7 cm and it is not exempt of mortality (3-5%). Objectives: Fibro-osseous lesions of the craniofacial complex comprise of a diverse, interesting and challenging group of conditions that pose difficulties in classification and treatment. The two most confused benign fibro-osseous lesions are fibrous dysplasia and ossifying fibroma. Sometimes, the classic clinical, radiologic or pathologic features of fibrous dysplasia or ossifying fibroma may not be evident, but overlapping features of both may be seen. The dilemma in diagnosis of these lesions rests in the bony trabeculae as well as in the fibrous stroma. Objective: The aim of this in vitro experimental study was to perform histological evaluation of the thermal effect produced on soft tissue irradiated with CO2 , Er,Cr:YSGG or diode lasers. Study design: Porcine oral mucosa samples were irradiated with Er,Cr:YSGG laser at 1 W with and without water / air spray, at 2 W with and without water / air spray, and at 4 W with water / air spray, with CO2 laser at 1 W, 2 W, 10 W, 20 W continuous mode and 20 W pulsed mode and diode laser at 2W, 5W, and 10W pulsed mode. Myopathy with hexagonally cross-linked crystalloid inclusions: delineation of a clinico-pathological entity.

A novel myopathy characterized by hexagonally cross-linked tubular arrays has been reported in five patients. We studied the clinical and histopathological features of five additional unrelated patients with this myopathy. Patients experienced exercise intolerance with exercise-induced myalgia and weakness, without rhabdomyolysis. One patient additionally presented mild permanent pelvic girdle muscle weakness. Age at onset varied between 13 and 56 years. The inclusions were eosinophilic on H and E, bright red with modified Gomori’s trichrome stains, present in type 2 fibers, and revealed immunoreactivity selectively for a caveolin-3-antibody.
