Interim Report on Survey of Teaching Practices In Developing Countries
2013
This paper illustrates a research method appropriate for researchers examining teaching practices and teacher training in poor countries. The method of research described here does not compare with large scale studies in terms of sample size, scientific rigor, and sophisticated statistical analysis. We believe, however, that it can, provide valid information sufficient in accuracy for policy making. Most importantly, we believe, this method offers a feasible way for national researchers to explore why teachers teach as they do in their country. A fundamental assumption is that once in the classroom most teachers learn little more about teaching. In the absence of any systematic feedback or …
Discovering temporal relationships in databases of newspapers
1998
This paper is mainly dedicated to analyse the problem of discovering frequent temporal patterns in event sequences extracted from a large repository of newspapers. The proposed formalism and algorithms rely on Toodor, which is a document retrieval system that allows users to specify conditions over the structure, contents and temporal features of the stored documents. We develop in this work several algorithms for recognising frequent temporal patterns in terms of arc-consistency, which consist of discarding temporal occurrences that do not satisfy a temporal structure.
Retention-pH profiles of acids and bases in hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography
2018
Abstract The high proportion of acetonitrile used in many HILIC mobile phases significantly changes the acid-base properties of pH buffers and analytes foreseen from available data in water. In this paper, the recommended stability pH range for chromatographic columns is examined with various acetonitrile/water mixtures, resulting in a significant broadening in the operational pH window with the content of organic solvent. Additionally, the challenge of buffer selection in HILIC is also addressed. Commonly used ammonium acetate shrinks its pH buffering range in acetonitrile-rich mobile phases due to variations in the dissociation constants of the buffer constituents (acetic acid and ammoniu…

'Not as safe as I believed': Differences in perceived and self-reported cycling behavior between riders and non-riders
2021
Cycling behavior remains a key issue for explaining several traffic causalities occurring every day. However, recent studies have shown how the assessment of the own safety-related behaviors on the road may substantially differ from how third parties assess them. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the differences between cyclists’ self-reported behavior and the proxy-reported behavior that other (non-cyclist) road users perceive from bike riders. For this purpose, this study used data from two samples: (i) 1064 cyclists (M = 32.83 years) answering the Cycling Behavior Questionnaire—CBQ, and (ii) 1070 non-cyclists (M = 30.83 years) answering an adapted version of the CBQ for externa…
A Combined Fuzzy and Probabilistic Data Descriptor for Distributed CBIR
2009
With the wide diffusion of digital image acquisition devices, the cost of managing hundreds of digital images is quickly increasing. Currently, the main way to search digital image libraries is by keywords given by the user. However, users usually add ambiguos keywords for large set of images. A content-based system intended to automatically find a query image, or similar images, within the whole collection is needed. In our work we address the scenario where medical image collections, which nowadays are rapidly expanding in quantity and heterogeneity, are shared in a distributed system to support diagnostic and preventive medicine. Our goal is to produce an efficient content-based descript…
Myocardial G Protein Receptor–Coupled Kinase Expression Correlates With Functional Parameters and Clinical Severity in Advanced Heart Failure
2010
In heart failure (HF), sympathetic hyperactivation induces deleterious effects in myocardial β-adrenergic signaling, with receptor down-regulation and desensitization mediated by G protein receptor-coupled kinases (GRKs). We hypothesised that changes in GRK isoforms may be associated with clinical status in advanced HF, using the Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (INTERMACS) scale. We included 31 patients with advanced HF undergoing transplantation. According to INTERMACS profiles, mRNA and protein levels of GRK isoforms in left ventricular (LV) myocardium were analyzed and compared with nonfailing LV samples. In failing LV myocardium, GRK2 and GRK5 (but not G…
