A Simple Solution for Improving the Effectiveness of Traditional Information Retrieval Systems
2005
In this paper we present a system based on the LSA paradigm to improve the performance of a traditional information retrieval system. The proposed system aims to improve both the recall and the precision capabilities of traditional search engines thanks to a semantic query expansion and a subsequent semantic results filtering. A collection of 650 documents has been used to compare the performances of the proposed system with a traditional search engine. Experimental trials show the effectiveness of the proposed solution
Analysing the Impact of the Glass Ceiling in a Managerial Career: The Case of Spain
2021
The need to break down the barriers facing women in the labour market arouses great interest for reasons of social and sustainability justice. This study breaks new ground on the topic of the “glass ceiling” by assessing the evolution of gender inequality in the proportion of individuals reaching high managerial positions. The application of the csQCA method to a survey of two cohorts of Spanish graduates in management sharing the same starting conditions reveals two factors: job variety and additional education, as conditions that are usually present in a successful managerial career. Our findings confirm the prevalence of the gender gap with little progress in recent years. Women find it …
Unemployment Determinants for Women in Spain
2000
Spain has one of the highest rates of unemployment among OECD countries. Some explanations for this stress the importance of unemployment duration compared with entry rates to the unemployment pool. Long-term unemployment rates are particularly high among women in Spain. The object of this paper is to investigate the determinants of unemployment duration among women. It will consider personal characteristics (education and age), family background, socio-economic variables (the number of household earners and household income) and the effect of unemployment benefits, using data from the Household Expenditure Survey 1990-91.
Aspects of phosphorus transfer from soils in Europe
2008
Imbalanced nutrient management has caused soil phosphorus (P) to become an environmental rather an agronomic problem in more economically developed countries. This subject has been the topic of numerous journal special issues, conferences, and reviews but we consider yet another review of this subject is necessary with the main target of providing a point of view on non-point transfer from soils and control strategies for an improved environmental management of P. This review considers the causes of the excessive P transfer from soil to surface water in Europe and the scientific knowledge necessary to develop control strategies. There has been an increasing trend towards the P-research inte…
Seasonal Mapping of Irrigated Winter Wheat Traits in Argentina with a Hybrid Retrieval Workflow Using Sentinel-2 Imagery
2022
Earth observation offers an unprecedented opportunity to monitor intensively cultivated areas providing key support to assess fertilizer needs and crop water uptake. Routinely, vegetation traits mapping can help farmers to monitor plant development along the crop’s phenological cycle, which is particularly relevant for irrigated agricultural areas. The high spatial and temporal resolution of the Sentinel-2 (S2) multispectral instrument leverages the possibility to estimate leaf area index (LAI), canopy chlorophyll content (CCC), and vegetation water content (VWC) from space. Therefore, our study presents a hybrid retrieval workflow combining a physically-based strategy with a machine learni…
Effect of imidazo[1,2-α]pyrimidine derivatives on leukocyte function
2001
Objective and Design: A series of six imidazo[1,2-α]pyrimidine (IP) derivatives were evaluated for their effects on leukocyte functions in vitro as well as on the inflammatory response induced by zymosan in the mouse air pouch.¶Materials and Subjects: Human neutrophils and murine peritoneal macrophages were used for in vitro assays. Mouse air pouch was performed in Swiss mice.¶Treatment: Test compounds were incubated with either human neutrophils or mouse peritoneal macrophages at concentrations not showing cytotoxic effects. For in vivo experiments, IPs were injected into the air pouch.¶Methods: Elastase and myeloperoxidase release, superoxide generation and LTB4 production were assayed in…
Effects of some isoxazolpyrimidine derivatives on nitric oxide and eicosanoid biosynthesis
2000
Abstract The inhibitory effect of some isoxazolpyrimidine derivatives on iNOS and COX-2 endotoxin induction in mouse peritoneal macrophages has been studied. Three of these compounds inhibited nitrite and PGE2 accumulation in a concentration dependent-manner at μM range. None of these active compounds affected iNOS, COX-2, COX-1 or PLA2 activities, although some reduced iNOS or COX-2 expression. Besides, no effect was observed on human neutrophil inflammatory responses (LTB4 biosynthesis and Superoxide or elastase release). Active compounds were assayed by oral administration in the mouse air pouch model, where they inhibited nitrite accumulation without affecting PGE 2 levels or leukocyte …
Beneficial effects of heme oxygenase-1 up-regulation in the development of experimental inflammation induced by zymosan.
2003
Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is part of the integrated response to oxidative stress. This enzyme may exert anti-inflammatory effects in some animal models, although the precise mechanisms are not fully understood. We have examined the role of HO-1 in the inflammatory response induced by zymosan in the mouse air pouch. Zymosan administration induced HO-1 protein expression in leukocytes migrating to exudates, with maximal levels in the late phase of this response (24-48 h). This was accompanied by ferritin induction and bilirubin accumulation, indicating that this enzyme is active in our model. HO-1 expression by zymosan treatment was partly reduced by aminoguanidine, suggesting the participation…
Effects of nordihydroguaiaretic acid on murine antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity.
1996
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of nordihydroguaiaretic acid, an inhibitor of the lipoxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid, on antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity. Antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity mediated by murine spleen cells was significantly inhibited by concentrations of nordihydroguaiaretic acid from 10(-5) to 10(-4) M (1C50 = 2 x 10(-5) M). The inhibitory effect of nordihydroguaiaretic acid was also observed on antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity mediated by macrophage-depleted spleen cells as well as isolated macrophages. Nordihydroguaiaretic acid was highly effective when added at the beginning of the assay and was always present throughout t…
