Cancer costs and outcomes for common cancer sites in the Finnish population between 2009–2014

2018

The cost of cancer and outcomes of cancer care have been discussed a lot since cancer represents 3-6% of total healthcare costs and cost estimations have indicated growing costs. There are studies considering the cost of all cancers, but studies focusing on the cost of disease and outcomes in most common cancer sites are limited. The objective of this study was to analyze the development of the costs and outcomes in Finland between 2009 and 2014 per cancer site. The National cost, episode and outcomes data were obtained from the National register databases based on International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 diagnosis codes. Cost data included both the direct and indirect c…

Patients with coronary artery disease and diabetes need improved management : a report from the EUROASPIRE IV survey: a registry from the EuroObserva…

2015

Background: In order to influence every day clinical practice professional organisations issue management guidelines. Cross-sectional surveys are used to evaluate the implementation of such guidelines. The present survey investigated screening for glucose perturbations in people with coronary artery disease and compared patients with known and newly detected type 2 diabetes with those without diabetes in terms of their life-style and pharmacological risk factor management in relation to contemporary European guidelines. Methods: A total of 6187 patients (18-80 years) with coronary artery disease and known glycaemic status based on a self reported history of diabetes (previously known diabet…

Epidemiology of multiple congenital anomalies in Europe : A EUROCAT population-based registry study

2014

BACKGROUND: This study describes the prevalence, associated anomalies, and demographic characteristics of cases of multiple congenital anomalies (MCA) in 19 population-based European registries (EUROCAT) covering 959,446 births in 2004 and 2010.METHODS: EUROCAT implemented a computer algorithm for classification of congenital anomaly cases followed by manual review of potential MCA cases by geneticists. MCA cases are defined as cases with two or more major anomalies of different organ systems, excluding sequences, chromosomal and monogenic syndromes.RESULTS: The combination of an epidemiological and clinical approach for classification of cases has improved the quality and accuracy of the M…

Seasonality of Congenital Anomalies in Europe

2014

BackgroundThis study describes seasonality of congenital anomalies in Europe to provide a baseline against which to assess the impact of specific time varying exposures such as the H1N1 pandemic influenza, and to provide a comprehensive and recent picture of seasonality and its possible relation to etiologic factors. Methods: Data on births conceived in 2000 to 2008 were extracted from 20 European Surveillance for Congenital Anomalies population-based congenital anomaly registries in 14 European countries. We performed Poisson regression analysis encompassing sine and cosine terms to investigate seasonality of 65,764 nonchromosomal and 12,682 chromosomal congenital anomalies covering 3.3 mi…

Spectrum of congenital anomalies in pregnancies with pregestational diabetes

2012

BACKGROUND Maternal pregestational diabetes is a well-known risk factor for congenital anomalies. This study analyses the spectrum of congenital anomalies associated with maternal diabetes using data from a large European database for the population-based surveillance of congenital anomalies. METHODS: Data from 18 population-based EUROCAT registries of congenital anomalies in 1990-2005. All malformed cases occurring to mothers with pregestational diabetes (diabetes cases) were compared to all malformed cases in the same registry areas to mothers without diabetes (non-diabetes cases). RESULTS: There were 669 diabetes cases and 92,976 non diabetes cases. Odds ratios in diabetes pregnancies re…

Temporal trends in prehospital management of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction from 2002 to 2010 in Cote d’Or: Data from the RICO registry (…

2012

Summary Background Myocardial infarction with ST-segment elevation (STEMI) is a medical emergency requiring specific management, with the main aim of achieving reperfusion as quickly as possible. Guidelines from medical societies have defined optimal management, with proven efficacy on morbi-mortality. Aims Our study aimed to evaluate trends in practices between 2002 and 2010 in the emergency management of STEMI in a single French department, namely Cote d’Or. Methods All patients admitted with a first STEMI to one of the six participating coronary care units (private or public) in Cote d’Or since January 2001 were included in a prospective registry (obseRvatoire des Infarctus de Cote d’Or …

The Full Revasc (Ffr-gUidance for compLete non-cuLprit REVASCularization) Registry-based randomized clinical trial

2021

Publisher Copyright: © 2021 Background: Complete revascularization in ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients with multivessel disease has resulted in reduction in composite clinical endpoints in medium sized trials. Only one trial showed an effect on hard clinical endpoints, but the revascularization procedure was guided by angiographic evaluation of stenosis severity. Consequently, it is not clear how Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR)-guided percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) affects hard clinical endpoints in STEMI. Methods and Results: The Ffr-gUidance for compLete non-cuLprit REVASCularization (FULL REVASC) – is a pragmatic, multicenter, international, registry-based rand…

Interrogator intonation and memory encoding performance.

2019

Based on recent findings that interrogator intonation can enhance interrogative suggestibility during recall phases, the present study tested influences of interrogator intonation on memory performance even as early as at the encoding stage. We experimentally manipulated interrogator intonation during encoding of a story to be recalled in immediate and delayed subsequent memory tests (Experiment 1, N = 50). As expected, a symmetrically structuring vs. an isolating-emphasizing speaking style generally increased the amount of freely recalled details. In a more fine-grained experiment (N = 50), we additionally manipulated emphasized story details and tested recall rates for peripheral, neutral…

Description of dynamic shared knowledge: an exploratory study during a competitive team sports interaction.

2011

This exploratory case study describes the sharedness of knowledge within a basketball team (nine players) and how it changes during an official match. To determine how knowledge is mobilised in an actual game situation, the data were collected and processed following course-of-action theory (Theureau 2003). The results were used to characterise the contents of the shared knowledge (i.e. regarding teammate characteristics, team functioning, opponent characteristics, opposing team functioning and game conditions) and to identify the characteristic types of change: (a) the reinforcement of a previous element of shared knowledge; (b) the invalidation of an element of shared knowledge; (c) fragm…

Childhood central nervous system tumours – incidence and survival in Europe (1978–1997): Report from Automated Childhood Cancer Information System pr…

2006

Abstract This paper describes the incidence and survival of childhood central nervous system (CNS) tumours in Europe for the period 1978–1997. A total of 19,531 cases, aged 0–14 years, from the ACCIS database were analysed by five regions: the British Isles, East, North, South, and West. Overall age-standardised incidence rate (ASR) of CNS tumours in Europe (1988–1997) was 29.9 per million, with the highest rates in the North. Astrocytoma (ASR = 11.8), primitive neuroectodermal tumours (PNET) (ASR = 6.5) and ependymoma (ASR = 3.4) were the most frequent types. Incidence increased significantly during 1978–1997, on average by 1.7% per year. Diagnostic methods may partially explain incidence …
