Testosterone/cortisol ratio in response to acute stress: a possible marker of risk for marital violence.
2013
Testosterone to cortisol (T/C) ratios could be associated with feelings and expression of anger as high testosterone and low cortisol levels indicate a predisposition to violence. The basal T/C ratio has recently been proposed as a marker for proneness to social aggression; so far, however, only its value as an indicator of state anger or violence has been investigated. Given this, we aimed to establish whether the T/C ratio response to acute stress was a specific psychobiological feature in individuals with a history of violence, namely, perpetrators of intimate partner violence (IPV). T/C ratio and anger responses were compared in men jailed for IPV and controls using the Trier Social Str…
Geoeconomic variations in epidemiology, ventilation management, and outcomes in invasively ventilated intensive care unit patients without acute resp…
2022
Contains fulltext : 252214.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) BACKGROUND: Geoeconomic variations in epidemiology, the practice of ventilation, and outcome in invasively ventilated intensive care unit (ICU) patients without acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remain unexplored. In this analysis we aim to address these gaps using individual patient data of four large observational studies. METHODS: In this pooled analysis we harmonised individual patient data from the ERICC, LUNG SAFE, PRoVENT, and PRoVENT-iMiC prospective observational studies, which were conducted from June, 2011, to December, 2018, in 534 ICUs in 54 countries. We used the 2016 World Bank classification to defi…
The role of the prefrontal cortex in familiarity and recollection processes during verbal and non verbal recognition memory: a rTMS study.
2010
Neuroimaging and lesion studies have documented the involvement of the frontal lobes in recognition memory. However, the precise nature of prefrontal contributions to verbal and non-verbal memory and to familiarity and recollection processes remains unclear. The aim of the current rTMS study was to investigate for the first time the role of the DLPFC in encoding and retrieval of non-verbal and verbal memoranda and its contribution to recollection and familiarity processes. Recollection and familiarity processes were studied using the ROC and unequal variance signal detection methodologies. We found that rTMS delivered over left and right DLPFC at encoding resulted in material specific later…
Lipoxygenase-derived arachidonic acid metabolites in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
2011
Background and Objective. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by a persistence of inflammation in large and small airways. We hypothesized that this could be caused by the inability of an inflammatory process to resolve. In the resolution of inflammation, a switching of arachidonic acid metabolism from the production of proinflammatory leukotriene B4 (LtB4) to the synthesis of anti-inflammatory lipoxins plays an important role. The aim of our study was to determine the content of lipoxin A4 (LXA4) and LtB4 in induced sputum of patients with exacerbated COPD and to compare it to healthy controls, as well as to analyze the relationship between proinflammatory and ant…
Empirical study of the dependence of the results of multivariable flexible survival analyses on model selection strategy
2008
Flexible survival models, which avoid assumptions about hazards proportionality (PH) or linearity of continuous covariates effects, bring the issues of model selection to a new level of complexity. Each ‘candidate covariate’ requires inter-dependent decisions regarding (i) its inclusion in the model, and representation of its effects on the log hazard as (ii) either constant over time or time-dependent (TD) and, for continuous covariates, (iii) either loglinear or non-loglinear (NL). Moreover, ‘optimal’ decisions for one covariate depend on the decisions regarding others. Thus, some efficient model-building strategy is necessary. We carried out an empirical study of the impact of the model …
The epidemiology of back pain and its relationship with depression, psychosis, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and stress sensitivity: Data from 43 low-…
2016
Background Back pain (BP) is a leading cause of global disability. However, population-based studies investigating its impact on mental health outcomes are lacking, particularly among low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Thus, the primary aims of this study were to: (1) determine the epidemiology of BP in 43 LMICs; (2) explore the relationship between BP and mental health (depression spectrum, psychosis spectrum, anxiety, sleep disturbances and stress). Methods Data on 190,593 community-dwelling adults aged ≥18 years from the World Health Survey (WHS) 2002–2004 were analyzed. The presence of past-12 month psychotic symptoms and depression was established using questions from the Compos…
Trends in the incidence of ischaemic stroke in young adults between 1985 and 2011: the Dijon Stroke Registry
2013
Recent data have suggested that stroke incidence in young people may be rising. In this population-based study, we aimed to determine whether the incidence of stroke in people aged55 years old had changed over the last three decades. All cases of first-ever stroke (ischaemic stroke, spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage, and undetermined stroke) occurring in Dijon, France, from 1985 to 2011 were prospectively collected from a population-based registry. Incidence rates were calculated and temporal trends were analysed by age groups and stroke subtypes using a Poisson regression to estimate incidence rate ratios (IRR). Risk factors and premorbid treatments were analysed.Over the 27-year study …
Prevalence and prognostic value of headache on early mortality in acute stroke: The Dijon Stroke Registry
2014
Objective To evaluate the prevalence of headache at onset and its association with 1-month mortality in stroke patients. Methods All patients with stroke in Dijon, France (2006–2011), were prospectively identified using a population-based registry. Cox regression models were used to evaluate the association between headache and 30-day all-cause mortality. Results Among 1411 stroke patients, data about headache were obtained for 1391 (98.6%) of whom 1185 had an ischemic stroke (IS), 201 had an intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and five had a stroke of undetermined etiology. Headache was found in 253 (18.2%) patients and was more frequent in those with ICH than in those with IS (46.3% vs 13.5%, …
Incidence and outcome of cerebrovascular events related to cervical artery dissection: the Dijon Stroke Registry.
2013
Background Reliable epidemiological data on the true incidence of cerebrovascular events related to spontaneous cervical artery dissection, including stroke and transient ischemic attack, are scarce. Aims To evaluate the incidence, characteristics, and outcome of cerebrovascular events due to cervical artery dissection. Methods All cerebrovascular events (stroke and transient ischemic attack) occurring in Dijon, France, from 2006 to 2011, were retrieved from a population-based registry. Patients with a cervical artery dissection were identified. Incidence rates, baseline characteristics, and outcome at three-months were described. Results Among the 1368 patients with cerebrovascular events,…
Temporal Trends in the Incidence of Ischemic Stroke in Young Adults: Dijon Stroke Registry
2021
Introduction: Stroke is associated with major consequences in terms of socioeconomic impact and lost disability-adjusted life in young victims, thus justifying a careful surveillance of epidemiological trends. This study aimed to assess changes in the incidence of ischemic stroke in young adults over a long period. Methods: All cases of first-ever ischemic stroke that occurred among adults aged 18–55 years were prospectively recorded using the population-based Dijon Stroke Registry, from 1985 to 2017. Sex-specific annual incidence rates were calculated and were presented according to 6 time periods. Incidence rate r…
