Phase retrieval for studying the structure of vitreous floaters simulated in a model eye

2021

We simulate vitreous floaters in a model eye and apply a phase retrieval algorithm to recover the structure of the vitreous floaters. The algorithm requires modulating the object under study by a r...

Embodied Meter Revisited : Entrainment, Musical Content, and Genre in Music-Induced Movement

2022

Previous research has shown that humans tend to embody musical meter at multiple beat levels during spontaneous dance. This work that been based on identifying typical periodic movement patterns, or eigenmovements, and has relied on time-domain analyses. The current study: 1) presents a novel method of using time-frequency analysis in conjunction with group-level tensor decomposition; 2) compares its results to time-domain analysis, and 3) investigates how the amplitude of eigenmovements depends on musical content and genre. Data comprised three-dimensional motion capture of 72 participants’ spontaneous dance movements to 16 stimuli including eight different genres. Each trial was subjected…

The role of eutrophication reduction of two small man-made Mediterranean lagoons in the context of a broader remediation system: Effects on water qua…

2013

In order to meet the requirements of the European Union Water Framework Directive for the Albufera de Valencia (AV) Natural Park, in 2009, several areas of free water surface constructed wetlands (FWSCWs) planted with emergent vegetation and two small shallow lagoons planted with submerged macrophytes were created over a 40-ha area formerly occupied by rice fields. This area is currently a reserve known as Tancat de la Pipa. The dual goal of this programme was to improve the quality of the hyper-eutrophicated waters of the AV lagoon, the largest littoral lagoon in the Iberian Peninsula, and to restore former lost habitats to increase the biodiversity of the area. The lagoons were mainly fed…

Macro Element Content in Fertilized Forest Soils in Spruce (Picea Abies (L.) H. Karst.) Stands in Latvia

2012

The present paper provides an overview of analysis conducted with soil samples from depths up to 80 cm, obtained in the Klive area from a spruce stand owned by JSC “Latvijas Valsts meži”. Also test fertilization attempts were made with the use of ash- and potassium-based artificial fertilizers (K2SO4). The content of macro elements (K, Ca, N, and C) was determined in the soil samples in the course of the analysis. The obtained results indicate that the content of K and Ca decreases at greater horizontal depths of the soil. Nutrients are subsequently being leached away from the soil. A higher C/N ratio at the horizontal depth of up to 10 cm in the soil means a higher content of organic subst…

Nutrient impoverishment and limitation of productivity after 20 years of conservation management in wet grasslands of north-western Germany

2009

Abstract European wet grasslands are characterized by high diversity of plant and animal species but are threatened by intensive land use. Although preservation or restoration of species-rich wet grasslands requires low nutrient availability that could be achieved by long-term management, studies monitoring nutrient removal are lacking. Our objective was to assess the long-term effect of management (mowing twice a year without or with PK fertilization for 20 years) on (i) productivity and nutrient removal with the harvest, (ii) the type of nutrient limitation, and (iii) plant species richness in wet grasslands in north-western Germany considering the differences between organic and mineral …

Spatial patterns of, and environmental controls on, soil properties at a riparianepaddock interface

2012

Abstract Riparian zones are prominent features of agricultural landscapes because they are the last point to intercept nutrients and sediments before they enter water bodies. We investigated the soil properties, nutrient dynamics and vegetation composition at the riparian–agriculture interface. Soil physicochemical and vegetation properties were spatially heterogeneous along the transition from the grazed paddock into the un-grazed and revegetated riparian zone. Soil C stocks varied considerably across the site, with values ranging from 2% in the paddock to 5% in the riparian zone. Using Bayesian model selection, a predictive model for total soil carbon was developed. By including soil mois…

Directionlets: Anisotropic Multidirectional representation with separable filtering

2006

In spite of the success of the standard wavelet transform (WT) in image processing in recent years, the efficiency of its representation is limited by the spatial isotropy of its basis functions built in the horizontal and vertical directions. One-dimensional (1-D) discontinuities in images (edges and contours) that are very important elements in visual perception, intersect too many wavelet basis functions and lead to a nonsparse representation. To efficiently capture these anisotropic geometrical structures characterized by many more than the horizontal and vertical directions, a more complex multidirectional (M-DIR) and anisotropic transform is required. We present a new lattice-based pe…

Global scripts and local translations: The case of cultural and creative industries (CCIs) in Norway

2014

Author's version of an article in the journal: City, Culture and Society. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ccs.2014.05.007 Cultural and creative industries (CCI) have, in recent years, been a prominent feature of policy initiatives across Northern Europe. This paper approaches CCI as a global, hegemonic 'script' or 'myth' that has spread across national boundaries and policy circles and, as a result, been translated in the light of historical trajectories, local dynamics, and strategic imperatives. In doing so, we shed critical light on ongoing dynamics across the Nordic countries, and more specifically, in the Norwegian national context, by illustrating how…

Changes in Drop Out Intentions: Implications of the Motivational Climate, Goal Orientations and Aspects of Self-Worth across a Youth Sport Season

2021

The main objective of this work was to study the motivational antecedents of the intention to drop out of youth sport from the postulates of the achievement goal theory (AGT), placing special emphasis on the motivational climate that coaches create in their teams. Specifically, we analyzed whether changes in the perception of the motivational climate between the beginning and the end of the season predicted changes in players’ goal orientations, whether these, in turn, predicted changes in self-esteem and contingent self-esteem, and finally, whether the latter predicted the intention to drop out. Participants in the study were 552 players (Mage = 11.23, SD = 1.14), who completed the questio…
