Nonroutine Use of Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump in Cardiogenic Shock Complicating Myocardial Infarction With Successful and Unsuccessful Primary Percutan…
2018
Abstract Objectives The authors sought to compare outcomes of patients with myocardial infarction and cardiogenic shock (CS) treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with or without intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) support according to final epicardial flow in the infarct-related artery. Background A routine use of IABP is contraindicated in patients with myocardial infarction and CS. There are no data regarding the subpopulation of patients who may benefit from such support besides patients with mechanical complications of myocardial infarction. Methods Prospective nationwide registry data of patients with myocardial infarction and CS treated with PCI between 2003 and 2014 wer…
The incidence of hip fractures in Norway –accuracy of the national Norwegian patient registry
2014
Background Hip fractures incur the greatest medical costs of any fracture. Valid epidemiological data are important to monitor for time-dependent changes. In Norway, hip fractures are registered in the Norwegian Patient Registry (NPR), but no published national validation exists. The aim of the present study was a national validation of NPR as a register for hip fractures using diagnostic codes (ICD-10 S 72.0-2) and/or procedure codes (NOMESCO version 1.14 NFBxy (x = 0-9, y = 0-2) or NFJxy (x = 0-9, y = 0-2). Method A nationwide, population-based cohort comprising a random sub-sample of 1,000 hip fracture-related entries for the years 2008–09 was drawn from the NPR. 200 entries were defined…
Clinical experience with retrievable vena cava filters: results of a prospective observational multicenter study
2005
Summary. Background: Retrievable inferior vena cava (IVC) filters offer the attractive possibility to be definitive or to be removed when they become unnecessary. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and the likelihood to remove the retrievable IVC filter ALN. Methods: A total of 30 patients (13 males and 17 females, mean age 57 ± 15 years) underwent placement of ALN filters. Indications for implantation were acute venous thromboembolism (VTE) with a contraindication to anticoagulation in 26 cases (86%), primary prophylaxis after major trauma in two cases (7%) or before surgery in two patients with very high thromboembolic risk (7%). Results: The filter was succ…
Chemosensory signalling pathways involved in sensing of amino acids by the ghrelin cell
2015
AbstractTaste receptors on enteroendocrine cells sense nutrients and transmit signals that control gut hormone release. This study aimed to investigate the amino acid (AA) sensing mechanisms of the ghrelin cell in a gastric ghrelinoma cell line, tissue segments and mice. Peptone and specific classes of amino acids stimulate ghrelin secretion in the ghrelinoma cell line. Sensing of L-Phe occurs via the CaSR, monosodium glutamate via the TAS1R1-TAS1R3 while L-Ala and peptone act via 2 different amino acid taste receptors: CaSR & TAS1R1-TAS1R3 and CaSR & GPRC6A, respectively. The stimulatory effect of peptone on ghrelin release was mimicked ex vivo in gastric but not in jejunal tissue …
Air pollution and stroke. A new modifiable risk factor is in the air
2019
Abstract Evidence from epidemiological studies has demonstrated that outdoor air pollution is now a well-known major problem of public health, mainly in low and middle income countries. Contrasting with myocardial infarction , there are few data on the association of air pollution and stroke. Methods We propose a narrative literature review of the effects and the underlying biological mechanisms of short- and long-term exposure to air pollutants on stroke risk and mortality, using the following key-words: stroke, cerebrovascular events, ischemic and haemorrhage stroke, transient ischaemic attack , mortality, air pollution and air pollutants. Results Twenty-one papers were selected. Air poll…
Resolution of Ménétrier’s Disease after<i> Helicobacter pylori</i> Eradicating Therapy
2001
Some cases of Ménétrier’s disease associated with <i>Helicobacter pylori</i> (HP) have recently been reported in the literature. We report here the case of a 51-year-old man with a diagnosis of Ménétrier’s disease who had previously been unsuccessfully treated with H2 antagonists. A subsequent demonstration of HP infection led us to treat the patient with an eradicating therapy which prompted complete regression of clinical symptoms, resolution of the gastric endoscopic picture, and absence of HP on gastric histology. This result, in accordance with others in the literature, indicates an eventual association of HP infection with Ménétrier’s disease and tha…

Innovative Educational Pathways in Spine Surgery: Advanced Virtual Reality–Based Training
2020
Background Over the past few years, a reorganization of the educational pathways has been promoted with the purpose of optimizing the acquisition of competences and their assessment, so as to reduce the risks to both health care professionals and end users. Virtual reality (VR) has been repeatedly tested, initially as a positive reinforcement for more traditional educational pathways and, more recently, as their potential substitute. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the potentiality of VR simulation training in spine surgery. Methods The VR simulator reproduced the lateral lumbar access to the spine. The simulation included a tutorial, the preoperative settings, and the surgical ses…
The relevance for Public Health of the mid-term and interim analyses of seasonal influenza vaccination effectiveness
2019
Worldwide, influenza is commonly recognized as a respiratory virus that causes a high number of deaths every year, especially among elderly adults and people with chronic illnesses. In order to reduce morbidity and mortality, many countries have implemented, in the last decades, universal influenza vaccination programs with special attention on groups at increased risk of developing the disease, such as pregnant women, children aged 6–59 months, elderly adults and individuals with specific chronic medical conditions. In real-world conditions, observational (nonrandomized) studies on vaccine effectiveness (VE) could measure, the risk reduction of contracting a disease and are considered the g…
Linfedema: Diagnóstico diferencial y pruebas complementarias
2010
