Depression, Anxiety and Quality of Life in Long-Term Survivors of Malignant Melanoma: A Register-Based Cohort Study
2015
Aim The purpose of the study was to determine anxiety and depression, quality of life, and their determinants in long-term survivors of malignant melanoma. Methods In a state cancer registry a cohort of survivors of malignant melanoma was contacted via the physician registered. Of 1302 contactable patients, 689 (52.2%) completed a questionnaire including the Patient Health Questionnaire with generalized anxiety (GAD-7) and depression (PHQ-9) and the EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ 30). Based on multiple regression analysis, predictors of quality of life and distress were identified. Comparison data were assessed in two waves of representative face-to-face household surveys of…
Temporal Trends in Sex Differences With Regard to Stroke Incidence
2016
Background and Purpose— We evaluated temporal trends in stroke incidence between men and women to determine whether changes in the distribution of vascular risk factors have influenced sex differences in stroke epidemiology. Methods— Patients with first-ever stroke including ischemic stroke, spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and undetermined stroke between 1987 and 2012 were identified through the population-based registry of Dijon, France. Incidence rates were calculated for age groups, sex, and stroke subtypes. Sex differences and temporal trends (according to 5-year time periods) were evaluated by calculating incidence rate ratios (IRRs) with Poisson regress…
Increasing Burden of Stroke: The Dijon Stroke Registry (1987–2012)
2017
<b><i>Background:</i></b> We aimed to provide a representation of the global burden of stroke. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> All cases of stroke were prospectively identified through the population-based registry of Dijon, France (1987–2012). Attack rates and mortality rates (defined as stroke leading to death within 30 days) were standardized to the European standard. Sex differences and temporal trends were evaluated by calculating rate ratios (RRs). <b><i>Results:</i></b> In all, 5,285 stroke cases (52.7% women) were recorded. The standardized attack rate was 98.2/100,000/year and the mortality rate was 12/100,000/year, and…
Usefulness of Thrombophilia Testing in Venous Thromboembolic Disease
2012
Information on thrombophilia risk factors for patients with upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) is limited. The genetic, acquired, and coagulation risk factors of an acute episode of lower EDVT (LEDVT) or UEDVT, either isolated or associated with pulmonary embolism (PE), were studied.A total of 4503 patients participated in a thrombophilia study. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated.Mean age of the participants was 55 ± 19 years. The risk of LEDVT or UEDVT, isolated or associated with PE, was calculated according to thrombophilia factors. We found association between LEDVT and factor V Leiden ([FVL]; OR: 1.8; 95% CI 1.4-2.4) and resistance to activated…
Inhibition of thromboxane biosynthesis by triflusal in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
2004
Abstract Triflusal is an antiplatelet drug related to aspirin, with different pharmacological properties and a lower haemorrhagic risk. We aimed at comparing their effects on platelet and endothelial activation in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In a randomized, double-blind, parallel group study, we compared the effects of three daily regimens (300, 600, and 900mg) of triflusal, and aspirin (100mg/day) on urinary 11-dehydro-thromboxane (TX)B 2 , index of in vivo platelet activation, ex vivo platelet function using the analyzer PFA-100, plasma von Willebrand factor (vWF), P-selectin, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and serum nitrite a…
Characteristics, Trends, and Outcomes of Liver Transplantation for Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis in Female Versus Male Patients
2021
Background. The influence of sex on primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), pre- and postliver transplantation (LT) is unclear. Aims are to assess whether there have been changes in incidence, profile, and outcome in LT-PSC patients in Europe with specific emphasis on sex. Methods. Analysis of the European Liver Transplant Registry database (PSC patients registered before 2018), including baseline demographics, donor, biochemical, and clinical data at LT, immunosuppression, and outcome. Results. European Liver Transplant Registry analysis (n = 6463, 32% female individuals) demonstrated an increasing number by cohort (1980-1989, n = 159; 1990-1999, n = 1282; 2000-2009, n = 2316; 2010-2017, n =…
Urinary metabolites of histamine and leukotrienes before and after placebo-controlled challenge with ASA and food additives in chronic urticaria pati…
2002
Background: The recovery of mediator metabolites from urine has the potential to provide a rapid, safe, and easily available index of release of mediators. We aimed to determine urinary metabolites of both histamine and leukotrienes (LTs) in patients affected by chronic urticaria (CU). Methods: Twenty patients with CU were studied. They were selected on the basis of double-blind placebo-controlled challenge (DBPC) with acetyl salicylic acid (ASA) and food additives. Ten patients (group B) were negative to both challenges. Ten patients (group C) presented urticaria and/or the appearance of angioedema during or 24 h after challenge, with reactions to ASA (five patients) or food additives (fiv…
Subtype-specific incidence of testicular cancer in Germany: a pooled analysis of nine population-based cancer registries.
2009
Summary Comparisons of incidence estimates of testicular cancer subtypes beyond seminoma and non-seminoma are virtually missing in the epidemiologic literature. We analysed incidence data from population-based German cancer registries to provide subtype-specific incidences of testicular cancer. We pooled data from nine cancer registries from 1998 to 2003. We estimated incidence and mortality time trends of West and East Germany. Incidence and mortality were standardized by the European standard population. The annual percentage incidence change from 1961 through 1989 was 4.9% in East Germany and 3.0% from 1970 through 2004 in Saarland. Incidence increases were the most pronounced among adol…
Enzyme replacement therapy with agalsidase alfa in patients with Fabry's disease: an analysis of registry data
2009
Summary Background We analysed 5-year treatment with agalsidase alfa enzyme replacement therapy in patients with Fabry's disease who were enrolled in the Fabry Outcome Survey observational database (FOS). Methods Baseline and 5-year data were available for up to 181 adults (126 men) in FOS. Serial data for cardiac mass and function, renal function, pain, and quality of life were assessed. Safety and sensitivity analyses were done in patients with baseline and at least one relevant follow-up measurement during the 5 years (n=555 and n=475, respectively). Findings In patients with baseline cardiac hypertrophy, treatment resulted in a sustained reduction in left ventricular mass (LVM) index af…
Comparative epidemiology of stroke and acute myocardial infarction: the Dijon Vascular Project (DIVA)
2009
Despite a common pathophysiological mechanism (ie, atherosclerosis) and similar vascular risk factors, few reliable studies have compared the epidemiology of stroke and acute myocardial infarction (AMI).All first ever cases of stroke and AMI in Dijon, France (151 846 inhabitants) from 2001 to 2006 were prospectively recorded. The 30 day case fatality rates (CFRs) and vascular risk factors were assessed in both groups.Over the 6 years, 1660 events (1020 strokes and 640 AMI) were recorded. Crude incidence of stroke was higher than that of AMI (112 vs 70.2/100 000/year; p0.001). With regard to sex, the relative incidence of stroke compared with AMI was 0.88 (95% CI 0.60 to 1.29; p = 0.51) in w…
