Ring splitting of azetidin-2-ones via radical anions

2012

The radical anions of azetidin-2-ones, generated by UV-irradiation in the presence of triethylamine, undergo ring-splitting via N-C4 or C3-C4 bond breaking, leading to open-chain amides. This reactivity diverges from that found for the neutral excited states, which is characterised by alpha-cleavage. The preference for beta-cleavage is supported by DFT theoretical calculations on the energy barriers associated with the involved transition states. Thus, injection of one electron into the azetidin-2-one moiety constitutes a complementary activation strategy which may be exploited to produce new chemistry.

A new dual inhibitor of arachidonate metabolism isolated from Helichrysum italicum.

2003

Six acetophenones (1-6) and one gamma-pyrone (7), previously isolated from Helichrysum italicum, were tested for their ability to inhibit enzymatic and non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation, the stable 1,1-diphenyl-2-pycryl-hydrazyl free radical, superoxide scavenging and arachidonic acid metabolism. In addition, they were studied in different experimental models such as the chronic inflammation induced by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA), the phospholipase A(2)-induced mouse paw oedema test, the carrageenan-induced mouse paw oedema test, and the writhing induced by acetic acid in the mouse. Of the assayed compounds, only 1 inhibited enzymatic lipid peroxidation but had no effect on no…

Anti-inflammatory activity of erycristagallin, a pterocarpene from Erythrina mildbraedii.

2003

Erycristagallin, a pterocarpene isolated from Erythrina mildbraedii, was tested in vitro for its antioxidant properties on the stable 2,2-diphenyl-1-pycryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical and on the arachidonic acid metabolism. In addition, erycristagallin was tested on different experimental models of inflammation, such as the acute and chronic inflammation induced by the application of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA) on mice and the phospholipase A(2)-induced mouse paw oedema test. In the carrageenan-induced mouse paw oedema test, the ethyl acetate extract obtained from E. mildbraedii showed anti-inflammatory activity, and erycristagallin was isolated as the active principle. In v…

Adherence to antithrombotic therapy guidelines improves mortality among elderly patients with atrial fibrillation: insights from the REPOSI study

2016

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with a substantial risk of thromboembolism and mortality, significantly reduced by oral anticoagulation. Adherence to guidelines may lower the risks for both all cause and cardiovascular (CV) deaths. Methods: Our objective was to evaluate if antithrombotic prophylaxis according to the 2012 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines is associated to a lower rate of adverse outcomes. Data were obtained from REPOSI; a prospective observational study enrolling inpatients aged ≥65 years. Patients enrolled in 2012 and 2014 discharged with an AF diagnosis were analysed. Results: Among 2535 patients, 558 (22.0 %) were discharged with a diagnos…

Foreign Direct Investment in oil-abundant countries: The role of institutions

2019

The present work reassesses the impact of good governance and democracy on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in oil-abundant countries. To this end, we estimate the effect of host countries’ institutions on greenfield FDI, using a gravity equation for a dataset that covers 182 countries during 2003-2012. Our findings confirm that compliance to rule of law, lack of corruption, political stability and democracy could boost new FDI links through the extensive margin. Our results could not rule out the “oil curse”, meaning that oil producers attract fewer new greenfield projects than similar countries without oil. Unlike other studies, we show that the impact of institutions is not necessarily un…

A multicentre European registry to evaluate the Direct Flow Medical transcatheter aortic valve system for the treatment of patients with severe aorti…

2016

Aims Our aim was to assess the clinical outcomes of the Direct Flow Medical Transcatheter Aortic Valve System (DFM-TAVS), when used in routine clinical practice. Methods and results This is a prospective, open-label, multicentre, post-market registry of patients treated with DFM-TAVS according to approved commercial indications. Echocardiographic and angiographic data were evaluated by an independent core laboratory and adverse events were adjudicated and classified according to VARC-2 criteria by an independent clinical events committee. The primary endpoint was freedom from all-cause mortality at 30 days post procedure. Secondary endpoints included procedural, early safety and efficacy en…

Incidence, Predictive Factors, and Prognostic Impact of Silent Atrial Fibrillation After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation.

2018

New onset atrial fibrillation post-transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is common and is associated with adverse outcomes. However, silent atrial fibrillation (AF) is poorly documented in the context. This study sought to evaluate the incidence, predictive factors, and prognostic value of Silent AF post-TAVI. All the consecutive patients with TAVI were prospectively analyzed by continuous electrocardiogram monitoring≥48 hours after implantation. Silent AF was defined as asymptomatic episodes lasting at least 30 seconds. The population was divided into 3 groups: history of AF, no-AF, and silent AF. Among the 206 patients implanted with TAVI, 19 (16.1%) developed silent AF. Compared…

Approximation and quasicontinuity of Besov and Triebel–Lizorkin functions

2016

We show that, for $0<s<1$, $0<p<\infty$, $0<q<\infty$, Haj\l asz-Besov and Haj\l asz-Triebel-Lizorkin functions can be approximated in the norm by discrete median convolutions. This allows us to show that, for these functions, the limit of medians, \[ \lim_{r\to 0}m_u^\gamma(B(x,r))=u^*(x), \] exists quasieverywhere and defines a quasicontinuous representative of $u$. The above limit exists quasieverywhere also for Haj\l asz functions $u\in M^{s,p}$, $0<s\le 1$, $0<p<\infty$, but approximation of $u$ in $M^{s,p}$ by discrete (median) convolutions is not in general possible.
