Las ruinas mayas de La Blanca, ubicadas en la cuenca baja del río Mopán (Petén, Guatemala), gozan de una ubicación privilegiada, ya que se extienden en una planicie dominada al Norte por una serranía que alcanza una altitud máxima de 490 metros y delimitada al Sur por la presencia del río Salsipuedes, tributario del Mopán. Es éste un paisaje de campos inundados, interrumpido por la presencia de fincas ganaderas y áreas de cultivo, en el que las ruinas se encuentran semiocultas en un reducto de bosque frondoso con árboles que alcanzan una altura media de 22 metros y entre los que es posible distinguir cerca de sesenta especies arbóreas. Recent studies have revealed strong associations between systemic trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) levels, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk. In addition, plasma L-carnitine levels in patients with high TMAO concentrations predicted an increased risk for cardiovascular disease and incident major adverse cardiac events. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relation between TMAO and L-carnitine plasma levels and diabetes. Background The role of trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) in type 2 diabetes (T2D) is currently partially understood and controversial. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease worldwide, yet the pathogenesis of NAFLD is only partially understood. Here, we investigated the role of the gut bacteria in NAFLD by stimulating the gut bacteria via feeding mice the fermentable dietary fiber, guar gum (GG), and suppressing the gut bacteria via chronic oral administration of antibiotics. GG feeding profoundly altered the gut microbiota composition, in parallel with reduced diet-induced obesity and improved glucose tolerance. Transcription intermediary factor 1γ (TIF1γ) was suggested to play a role in erythropoiesis. However, how TIF1γ regulates the development of different blood cell lineages and whether TIF1γ is involved in human hematological malignancies remain to be determined. Here we have shown that TIF1γ was a tumor suppressor in mouse and human chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML). Loss of Tif1g in mouse HSCs favored the expansion of the granulo-monocytic progenitor compartment. Furthermore, Tif1g deletion induced the age-dependent appearance of a cell-autonomous myeloproliferative disorder in mice that recapitulated essential characteristics of human CMML. In volume- or pressure-controlled hemorrhagic shock (HS) a bolus intravenous infusion of hypertonic/hyperoncotic solution (HHS) proved beneficial compared to isotonic crystalloid solutions. During uncontrolled HS in animals, however, HHS by bolus increased blood pressure unpredictably, and increased blood loss and mortality. Familial fatal fetal cardiomyopathy with isolated myocardial calcifications: A new syndrome?

We describe three male sib fetuses with isolated myocardial calcifications resulting in intrauterine fetal death (IUFD) as early as the second trimester. No evidence for an underlying mitochondrial cytopathy, dystrophinopathy or myopathy was found. There were no signs of inflammation or a metabolic disorder, and the mother had no prenatal exposure of teratogenic drugs. Furthermore, no mutation in the Barth syndrome gene (G4.5) could be detected. Because isolated calcification of the heart and IUFD are not typical of any previously described inherited cardiomyopathy, it may represent a new familial fetal cardiomyopathy.
