Toxicity assessment and biodegradation potential of water-soluble sludge containing 2,4,6-trinitrotoluen

The water-soluble phase of trinitrotoluene-containing sludge (SLP) was characterized with regard to trinitrotoluene (TNT) concentration, ecotoxicity, and a model biodegradation experiment as evaluation criteria for further development of appropriate treatment technologies. SLP contained 67.8 mg TNT/l. The results of germination and root-elongation tests indicated that SLP had a species-specific phytotoxic effect. The results of a 21 day degradation experiment demonstrated TNT conversion to 4-amino-2,6-DNT and 2-amino-4,6-DNT, with a simultaneous reduction in the total concentration of nitroaromatics. The widely used explosive 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) has residues that are potentially explosive, toxic, and mutagenic. TNT and other explosives can be degraded by microorganisms; however, biostimulation is needed for process efficiency. To investigate the effectiveness of using biostimulation to degrade TNT, we added varying concentrations of a nutrient amendment consisting of inorganic salts, plant extracts, and molasses to soil and liquid media. For the inoculum we used a consortium of bacteria AM 06 that had exhibited the ability to degrade TNT and which had been previously isolated from explosives-contaminated soils. Abstract The detection of explosives and explosive-related compounds is of major importance for the monitoring of explosive- contaminated sites. Current methods need to become cheaper and portable while maintaining a high sensitivity and selectivity level. In that sense, a silicon micro-analytical platform consisting of a three-dimensional micro-preconcentrator based on a hydrophobic zeolite, coupled to a silicon spiral micro-column was built. A chemical gas sensor acted as a miniaturized gas detector. This system allowed selective detection of orthonitrotoluene (ONT), an explosive-related compound at the sub-ppm level in the presence of toluene and moisture.
Microscale Marangoni actuation: All-optical and all-electrical methods

We present experimental results from an all-optical microfluidic platform that may be complimented by a thin film all-electrical network. Using these configurations we have studied the microfluidic convective flow systems of silicone oil, glycerol, and 1,3,5-trinitrotoluene on open surfaces through the production of surface tension gradients derived from thermal gradients. We show that sufficient localized thermal variation can be created utilizing surface plasmons and/or engaging individually addressable resistive thermal elements. Use of kinetic DTA and TG methods for compatibility tests on 2,4,6--trinitrotoluene

We have investigated the suitability of thermoanalytical methods for compatibility tests on explosives and contact materials. DTA and TG curves of various materials were evaluated using two DTA and four TG methods and one DSC method. TNT was used as model substance. The contact materials were paraffin, polyethylene, an epoxy resin paint and an epoxy glue. In earlier tests the first two were found compatible and the latter two incompatible with TNT. None of the methods provides an absolute value for the activation energy. However, in compatibility tests only the relative change in the activation energy is of interest and, for this, three of the methods proved informative.

To investigate the exposure to dinitrotoluene (DNT) and trinitrotoluene (TNT) and the resulting effects in workers which occur during the disposal of military waste.Eighty two employees from a mechanical plant in Germany were studied, of whom 51 were regularly exposed to ammunition containing TNT and DNT, 19 occasionally, and 12 not at all.Air analyses yielded maximum concentrations of 20 micro g/m(3) for 2,4-DNT and 3250 micro g/m(3) for 2,4,6-TNT, respectively. The maximum concentrations in the urine of workers regularly exposed amounted to 5.0 micro g/l of 2,4,6-TNT, 1464.0 micro g/l of 2-amino-4,6-dinitrotoluene, 6693.0 of micro g/l 4-amino-2,6-dinitrotoluene, 2.1 micro g/l of 2,4-DNT, …
