Fitness costs of intrinsic competition in two egg parasitoids of a true bug

2015

Intrinsic competition in insect parasitoids occurs when supernumerary larvae develop in the same host as consequence of multiple ovipositions by females of the same species (intra-specific competition) or by females of different species (inter-specific competition). Studies on intrinsic competition have mainly focused on understanding the factors that play a role in the outcome of competition, while fitness-related effects for the parasitoid surviving the competition have been poorly investigated, especially in egg parasitoids. Interestingly, even the winning parasitoid can experience fitness costs due to larval development in a host in which multiple factors have been injected by the ovipo…

Points of View and Relativism

2020

This chapter defines the central concept of this book, the point of view. The development of viewpoint relativism is largely based on this concept. A point of view is defined as choosing a certain aspect of its object to represent it. In principle, points of view are subjective and they are anchored to the internal cognitive models of a person. But points of view can also be objectified linguistically and brought out to be publicly examined. Points of view are not permanent, but can be changed and developed, and even exchanged in certain cases. Points of view are not true or untrue as such, but the maps that are acquired through their adoption are more or less true. We can compare objectifi…

The Besov capacity in metric spaces

2016

We study a capacity theory based on a definition of Haj{\l} asz-Besov functions. We prove several properties of this capacity in the general setting of a metric space equipped with a doubling measure. The main results of the paper are lower bound and upper bound estimates for the capacity in terms of a modified Netrusov-Hausdorff content. Important tools are $\gamma$-medians, for which we also prove a new version of a Poincar\'e type inequality.

A new Cartan-type property and strict quasicoverings when p = 1 in metric spaces

2018

In a complete metric space that is equipped with a doubling measure and supports a Poincar\'e inequality, we prove a new Cartan-type property for the fine topology in the case $p=1$. Then we use this property to prove the existence of $1$-finely open \emph{strict subsets} and \emph{strict quasicoverings} of $1$-finely open sets. As an application, we study fine Newton-Sobolev spaces in the case $p=1$, that is, Newton-Sobolev spaces defined on $1$-finely open sets.

L'accueil des enfants (d') immigrés dans les écoles françaises : éducation entre culture familiale et culture du pays d'arrivée

2011

Immigrant(s') children are the purveyors of a family tongue and culture which differ from that of the host country and its education system, when in fact, family culture and the mother-tongue play a major role in harmonious child development and in his/her integration into society. School, which should aim at both enabling the child to establish himself/herself as a subject and finding his/her place in society, conveys a different culture, which is regarded as legitimate. What about the tongues and cultures of immigrant children? Until the 1970s, nothing specific was schemed for immigrant school children. They had to merge with the rest. Family reunification policies brought along the takin…

Alterations in the organization of the isocortical layer I in trisomy 22.

1999

The isocortical layer I of human fetal brains obtained from different cases of chromosomal abnormalities (trisomy 18, 21, 22) and controls without pathological disturbances were investigated histologically and immunohistochemically by using the antibodies SMI 311, SMI 35 and SMI 81 (SNAP 25) as well as antibodies against GAP 43 and calretinin. In cases of trisomy 22 the Cajal-Retzius cells in Nissl-sections and in SMI 311-immunopreparations do not reveal any alterations regarding their location or morphology. However, the axonal plexus, selectively labelled with SMI 35, normally located in layer Ib, is malpositioned in Ia. Likewise, SNAP 25- and GAP 43-immunoreactive structures, which were …
