Incorporation of phenylalanine-H3 in the fragments of the fertilized ascidian egg

1972

First operation of the KATRIN experiment with tritium

2020

AbstractThe determination of the neutrino mass is one of the major challenges in astroparticle physics today. Direct neutrino mass experiments, based solely on the kinematics of $$\upbeta $$β-decay, provide a largely model-independent probe to the neutrino mass scale. The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment is designed to directly measure the effective electron antineutrino mass with a sensitivity of $$0.2\hbox { eV}$$0.2eV ($$90\%$$90% CL). In this work we report on the first operation of KATRIN with tritium which took place in 2018. During this commissioning phase of the tritium circulation system, excellent agreement of the theoretical prediction with the recorded spectra was …

TRITIUM - A Real-Time Tritium Monitor System for Water Quality Surveillance

2018

In this work the development results of the TRITIUM project is presented. The main objective of the project is the construction of a near real-time monitor for low activity tritium in water, aimed at in-situ surveillance and radiological protection of river water in the vicinity of nuclear power plants. The European Council Directive 2013/51/Euratom requires that the maximum level of tritium in water for human consumption to be lower than 100 Bq/L. Tritium levels in the cooling water of nuclear power plants in normal operation are much higher than the levels caused by the natural and cosmogenic components, and may easily surmount the limit required by the Directive. The current liquid-scint…

Beta Decay of Molecular Tritium

2020

The beta decay of tritium in the form of molecular TT is the basis of sensitive experiments to measure neutrino mass. The final-state electronic, vibrational, and rotational excitations modify the beta spectrum significantly, and are obtained from theory. We report measurements of the branching ratios to specific ionization states for the isotopolog HT. Two earlier, concordant measurements gave branching ratios of HT to the bound HHe$^+$ ion of 89.5% and 93.2%, in sharp disagreement with the theoretical prediction of 55-57%, raising concerns about the theory's reliability in neutrino mass experiments. Our result, 56.5(6)%, is compatible with the theoretical expectation and disagrees strongl…

Assessment of the Possible Lay-Out Influence on the HCLL-TBM Nuclear Response

2009

The Department of Nuclear Engineering of the University of Palermo (DIN) was involved, since several years, in the study of the nuclear response of the helium-cooled lithium lead (HCLL) test blanket module (TBM) which will be tested in ITER. In this framework a research campaign was performed, at the DIN, to asses the nuclear response of the TBM in a toroidal lay-out, with the specific aim to investigate the possible lay-out influence on the module nuclear behaviour by comparing the results obtained with those presented in a similar previous work focussed on the most recent design of the poloidal HCLL-TBM. A computational approach based on the Monte Carlo method was followed and a realistic…

KATRIN, a next generation tritium β decay experiment in search for the absolute neutrino mass scale

2002

Abstract With the compelling evidence for massive neutrinos from recent ν-oscillation experiments, one of the most fundamental tasks of particle physics over the next years will be the determination of the absolute mass scale of neutrinos, which has crucial implications for cosmology, astrophysics and particle physics. A next generation tritium β decay experiment, the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment (KATRIN), is proposed to reach a sub eV sensitivity on the absolute mass of the electron neutrino.

Stability of solid T2 films

1990

Abstract Films of molecular tritium, physisorbed on a cold substrate, have been investigated by means of ellipsometry. A significant effect of the radioactive decay processes on the desorption kinetics and the low temperature stability of these films is not observed.

Photoaffinity labeling of Torpedo acetylcholine receptor by physostigmine.

1993

The plant alkaloid physostigmine, an established anti-cholinesterase agent of the carbamate type, has recently been shown to bind to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor from Torpedo marmorata electrocytes [Okonjo, K. O., Kuhlmann, J.Maelicke, A. (1991) Eur. J. Biochem. 200, 671-677]. Pharmacological studies of physostigmine-induced ion flux into nicotinic-acetylcholine-receptor-rich membrane vesicles, indicated distinct binding sites for physostigmine and acetylcholine. As shown in this study by photoaffinity labeling with [phenyl-(n)-3H](-)physostigmine, the physostigmine-binding site is located within the same subunit (alpha polypeptide) of the receptor as the acetylcholine-binding site.…

Effects of bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF alpha) on rat tracheal epithelial cells in culture: morphology, …

1996

Rat tracheal epithelial cells were cultured and the effects of LPS and TNF alpha on cell morphology, rate of proliferation and NO synthase activity were studied. NO synthase activity was determined by measuring the accumulation of 3H-L-citrulline during incubation of confluent monolayer with 3H-L-arginine. In untreated cells no significant 3H-L-citrulline formation was detected, and bradykinin and the calcium ionophore A 23187 failed to stimulate 3H-L-citrulline formation excluding a constitutively expressed, calcium-dependent NO synthase activity. After culturing the cells for 18 h in the presence of LPS (10 micrograms/ml) and TNF alpha (500 U/ml) a marked formation of 3H-L-citrulline coul…
