The fate of organic matter sources in coastal environments: a comparison of three Mediterranean lagoons

Trophic processes in coastal lagoons are strongly influenced by freshwater inputs and water exchanges with the sea. In recent years, stable isotope analysis has become a widespread and reliable method for the examination of trophic structure over time and space, also in complex ecosystems such as coastal lagoons. Biology of the preimaginal stages in trogid beetles (Coleoptera): Experimental data∗

Abstract Some aspects of larval behaviour in two species of trogid beetles, Trox bispidus (Pontoppidan) from temperate Europe and Afromorgus tuberosus (Klug) from tropical Africa, have been studied experimentally. From the results obtained it emerges that the rise of the newborn larvae towards the soil surface is imputable to a simple negative geotropism. Larval food relocation also contributes to reducing aggressive interactions at the food source. The potential range of trophic and behavioural variation seems to be larger than that expressed in nature as a rule. Dinner with the roommates: trophic niche differentiation and competition in a mutualistic ant‐ant association

1. The potential for competition is highest among species in close association. Despite net benefits for both parties, mutualisms can involve costs, including food competition. This might be true for the two neotropical ants Camponotus femoratus and Crematogaster levior, which share the same nest in a presumably mutualistic association (parabiosis). 2. Abstract Suspension-feeders largely dominate faunal communities on rocky shores and compete for food using different feeding strategies. We used stable isotopes to assess the individual specialization within common suspension-feeder populations and to evaluate both inter-specific and intra-specific differences in food source exploitation. Abstract Regulation of soil decomposer community structure and ecosystem processes, such as nutrient cycling, under herbicide stress was studied in a microcosm experiment. For the experiment, coniferous forest soil was defaunated and put into the microcosms. Bite marks as evidence of predation in early vertebrates

Study of lifetime bite traces on agnathans and fish (or gnathostomes) from Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia and north-western and central European Russia reveals evidence of predator–prey relationships in communities of Devonian age. Numerous bite traces on skeletal parts of agnathan pteraspidiforms and psammosteiforms, placoderm arthrodires and antiarchs and sarcopterygian porolepiforms and osteolepiforms are described.
