Water Conflict and Water Management in the Middle East

2004

“Water is Life”: this is often forgotten in countries with abundant water ressources. As a ressource it only gains importance once it is in short supply or once its quality declines. In the case of shortage the battle for water becomes inevitable. At the moment we have up to 200 conflicts of border-crossing water systems in the world. The Middle East is considered to be a typical example of this politically significant problem

Smart vs conventional motorways: environmental impact assessment under realistic traffic conditions

2020

Abstract This research aims at assessing the environmental impacts exerted by a smart motorway compared to those of a traditional motorway. The study has global policy implications: it takes into account the impacts due to the construction and maintenance of the infrastructure and the environmental effects produced by the traffic emissions, taking into account smart technologies and truck platooning regulation. Through a classical LCA approach, 1 km-long smart motorway with 2 m-high embankment was assumed as the functional unit for the analysis. A realistic traffic condition has been considered. A comparison between environmental effects produced by the use of virgin material and by Reclaim…

Large‐scale set partitioning problems: Some real‐world instances hide a beneficial structure

2006

In this paper we consider large‐scale set partitioning problems. Our main purpose is to show that real‐world set partitioning problems originating from the container‐trucking industry are easier to tackle in respect to general ones. We show such different behavior through computational experiments: in particular, we have applied both a heuristic algorithm and some exact solution approaches to real‐world instances as well as to benchmark instances from Beasley OR‐library. Moreover, in order to gain an insight into the structure of the real‐world instances, we have performed and evaluated various instance perturbations. A Branch-and-Cut Algorithm for the Single Truck and Trailer Routing Problem with Satellite Depots

2016

International audience; In the single truck and trailer routing problem with satellite depots (STTRPSD), a truck with a detachable trailer based at a main depot must serve the demand of a set of customers accessible only by truck. Therefore, before serving the customers, it is necessary to detach the trailer in an appropriate parking place (called either a satellite depot or a trailer point) and transfer goods between the truck and the trailer. This problem has applications in milk collection for farms that cannot be reached using large vehicles. In this work we present an integer programming formulation of the STTRPSD. This formulation is tightened with several families of valid inequaliti…

Are Distinctions Between Genres Still Relevant?

1998

Why do readers — and especially literary critics — feel the need to classify works of art into categories which one often calls genres? On the one hand fashionable ideas lead some commentators to argue that, in this infinitely innovative world, genres have become irrelevant because traditional rules have been subverted. The ineffable text (sacralized in italics) is all that counts. Yet, on the other, their description of works of literature inevitably resorts to such terms as ‘fantasy’, ‘allegory’, ‘realism’, ‘tragedy’, even if they carefully place these in inverted commas. As the ‘reception’ school of criticism has convincingly shown, a novel, poem or play takes on its full meaning when it…

Delivery Truck Drivers’ Work Outside Their Cabs: Ergonomic Video Analyses Supplemented with National Accident Statistics

2014

Delivery truck drivers' work contains various physically and psychosocially demanding work situations. Fifteen drivers' and 8 other stakeholders' identifications of such work situations were examined by video analyses in this study. The identifications were analyzed in-depth by the researchers and compared with statistics on 3,507 accidents in the Finnish trucking industry. The aim was to determine what kind of identifications were made and to what degree the identifications coincided among the participants and with the accident statistics. The drivers' identifications differed from the statistics data. The statistics showed a significantly higher relative frequency of movement-related situ…

Driving Through Neoliberalism : Finnish Truck Drivers Constructing Respectable Male Worker Subjectivities

2017

This chapter analyses how Finnish male truck drivers (re)produce themselves as respectable male workers in the face of the recent economic, technological and institutional transformations impacting the European haulage sector. The investigation is based on ethnographic data which are produced by riding along on assignments with ten male Finnish truck drivers in the period 2012–2016. The analysis shows how truck drivers’ independence and value in the work process has become challenged and how truckers experience being occupationally stigmatized. The study argues, however, that while economic restructuring undermines some components of traditional forms of working-class masculinity, masculine…

A ride comfort tyre model for off-highway vehicles

2014

Tyre modelling is a major challenge when using time domain multibody simulation models to evaluate ride comfort on off-highway commercial vehicles. Further, parameters for these big tyres are difficult to obtain and thus, commercial car tyre models are difficult to apply. In this research work, a simple vertical tyre model for off-highway ride comfort evaluation is suggested. A displaced volume approach has been developed and combined with the slip theory to yield a tyre model that can be characterised by only three parameters. Full scale measurements on a dump truck have been carried out. Force responses from measurements are compared to the simulation results. Acceleration responses and t…

Acceptance of truck platooning by professional drivers on German highways. A mixed methods approach.

2020

Abstract Truck platoon driving is a current branch of automated driving, which has the potential to radically change the work routine of professional drivers. In a platoon system, one truck (semi-)automatically follows a lead truck with a reduced distance, which produces significant savings in fuel and enables better traffic flow. In a current application of truck platoon driving, the following vehicle operates at level-2 automation. Thus, the driver of the following truck merely has to supervise the semi-automated system, which takes over steering and speed control when engaged. Level-2 truck platoon driving had not been tested with professional drivers in real traffic before. We hypothesi…
