Neutralization of Syllable-final Voicing in German
1985
German is well known for its neutralization of the voicing contrast in word-final obstruents. However, acoustic analysis of ten pairs of German words produced by ten native speakers revealed that the distributions of acoustic parameters for underlying voiced and voiceless stops are significantly different, despite considerable overlap between the two categories. Furthermore, in a listening test, German listeners were able to distinguish the voiced and voiceless pairs with about 60% accuracy—significantly better than chance. Several mechanisms for such a “semicontrast” are considered, including the possibility that it is an experimental artifact. It is concluded that this is not an artifact,…
Overrating Classifier Performance in ROC Analysis in the Absence of a Test Set: Evidence from Simulation and Italian CARATkids Validation
2019
Background The use of receiver operating characteristic curves, or “ROC analysis,” has become quite common in biomedical research to support decisions. However, sensitivity, specificity, and misclassification rates are still often estimated using the training sample, overlooking the risk of overrating the test performance. Methods A simulation study was performed to highlight the inferential implications of splitting (or not) the dataset into training and test set. The normality assumption was made for the classifier given the disease status, and the Youden's criterion considered for the detection of the optimal cutoff. Then, an ROC analysis with sample split was applied to assess the disc…
Children with special health care needs attending emergency department in Italy: analysis of 3479 cases
2020
Abstract Background Although children with special health care needs (CSHCN) represent a minority of the population, they go through more hospitalizations, more admissions to the Emergency Department (ED), and receive a major number of medical prescriptions, in comparison to general pediatric population. Objectives of the study were to determine the reasons for admission to the ED in Italian CSHCN, and to describe the association between patient’s demographic data, clinical history, and health services requirements. Methods Ad hoc web site was created to collect retrospective data of 3479 visits of CSHCN to the ED in 58 Italian Hospitals. Results Seventy-two percent of patients admitted to …
Continuous Broadband MWP True-Time Delay with PbS-PMMA and -SU8 waveguides
2016
[EN] A new microwave true-time delay (TTD) photonic unit based on the dispersion of PbS colloidal quantum dots (QDs) in a Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and the SU8 photoresist is presented. With this aim, the PbS-PMMA and PbS-SU8 nanocomposites are integrated on a silicon platform in the form of a planar and ridge waveguides, respectively. When PbS QDs on those structures are pumped below their band-gap, a phase shift and a temporal delay in an optically conveyed (at 1550 nm) microwave signal is performed. The results of these devices show potential benefits over current TTD technologies, since the proposed photonic waveguide structures allows real-time adjustment of the temporal delay by …
MWP true time delay implemented in PbS-SU8 waveguides
2015
Measurements of neutron radiation and induced radioactivity for the new medical linear accelerator, the Varian TrueBeam
2016
Contemporary linear accelerators applied in radiotherapy generate X-ray and electron beams with energies up to 20 MeV. Such high-energy therapeutic beams induce undesirable photonuclear (γ,n) and electronuclear (e,e'n) reactions in which neutrons and radioisotopes are produced. The originated neutron can also induce reactions such as simple capture, (n,γ), reactions that produce radioisotopes. In this work measurements of the non-therapeutic neutrons and the induced gamma radiation were carried out in the vicinity of a new medical accelerator, namely the Varian TrueBeam. The TrueBeam is a new generation Varian medical linac making it possible to generate the X-ray beams with a dose rate hig…
Well GeHP detector calibration for environmental measurements using reference materials
2016
International audience; A well-type detector installed in the Modane underground Laboratory (LSM) can combine both low background and high detection efficiency and it is well suited for the analysis of small amounts of environmental samples. Reference materials such as IAEA-447 (moss-soil), IAEA-RG-Th1 and IAEA-RG-U1 were used for the detector calibration, owing to a chemical composition close to those of the environmental samples. Nevertheless , the matrix effects and the true coincidence summing effects must be corrected from the full energy peak efficiency (FEPE). The FEPE was performed for a wide range of energy by a semi-empirical method using Monte Carlo simulation (MCNP6), intended f…
Electrically tunable photonic true-time-delay line
2010
We present a new application of the acousto-optic superlattice modulation of a fiber Bragg grating based on the dynamic phase and group delay properties of this fiber-optic component. We demonstrate a tunable photonic true-time-delay line based on the group delay change of the light reflected from the grating sidebands. The delay is electrically tuned by adjusting the voltage applied to a piezoelectric transducer that generates the acoustic wave propagating along the grating. In our experiments, a true-time delay of 400 ps is continuously adjusted (300 ps within the 3 dB amplitude range of the first sideband), using a 12 cm long uniform grating.
European culture, history, and heritage as political tools in the rhetoric of the Finns Party
2019
Various studies have indicated how notions and (mis)interpretations of national history, heritage, and culture are utilized by diverse populist and extremist political parties in Europe. However, scholars have less explored how the idea of a common European history, heritage, and culture are used by these parties to justify their xenophobic, anti-immigration, anti-globalization, and monoculturalist political attitudes and the defense of ‘us’. This chapter focuses on this question by examining the political rhetoric of the Finns Party, the core populist party in Finland. The data consists of selected texts discussing broadly the topics of the EU, Europe, nation, identity, and/or culture, pub…
