Temporal frames of 45S rDNA site-number variation in diploid plant lineages: lessons from the rock rose genus Cistus (Cistaceae)

The perception that the turnover of 45S rDNA site number in plants is highly dynamic pervades the literature on rDNA evolution. However, most reported evidences come from the study of polyploid systems and from crop species subjected to intense agronomic selection. In sharp contrast with polyploids, the evolutionary patterns of rDNA loci number in predominantly diploid lineages have received less attention. A stochastic model of seed dispersal pattern to assess seed predation by ants in annual dry grasslands

A combined field experiment and modelling approach has been used to provide evidence that ants may be responsible for an observed lower patchiness and higher plant diversity in the neighbourhood of ant nests, within Mediterranean dry grasslands belonging to the phytosociological class Tuberarietea guttatae. The hypothesis was that seeds occurring in clumps may have an higher probability to be harvested than seeds having a scattered distribution. Nuclear DNA content variation inHalimiumandXolantha(Cistaceae)

Abstract Chromosome numbers and nuclear DNA contents were determined in several taxa of two genera of Cistaceae, Halimium and Xolantha. The diploid chromosome number 2n = 18 is stable within the genus Halimium. In Xolantha, the diploid chromosome number 2n = 14 was confirmed in X. tuberaria, and hexaploid (2n = 36) and octoploid (2n = 48) cytotypes were found in X. guttata. DNA amounts, first reported here for these genera, were determined by flow cytometry of propidium iodide-stained nuclei. Within Halimium there is a more than twofold difference in genome size between H. calycinum (7.61 pg DNA) and H. atriplicifolium (3.66 pg DNA).
