Phenoloxidase characterization in vacuolar hemocytes from the solitary ascidian Styela plicata

1995

Phenoloxidase (PO) activity was shown in lysates of Styela plicata hemocytes assayed spectrophotometrically by means of L-Dopa oxidation without divalent cations. Trypsin and chymotrypsin pretreatment and preincubation with microbial lipopolysaccharides significantly activated PO, whereas laminarin or zymosan were ineffective. Soybean trypsin inhibitor, tropolone, and phenylthiourea, but not benzamidine, were inhibitors. Finally, hemocytes were separated by a discontinuous Percoll density gradient to determine which cells were active. PO activity was demonstrated, by both biochemical and cytochemical assays, in the separated fraction enriched mainly with the globular granulocytes called mor…

«Correlation between granulocytes and tunic cuticle of Ciona intestinalis (Tunicata, Ascidiacea) as evaluated by microscopy»

2012

The tunic is a peculiar integumentary tissue covering the epidermis of ascidians and other tunicates. It is an extracellular matrix whose outermost surface is revealed to be a continuos layer called tunic cuticle, composed of electron dense fibrous materials. Mechanisms occurring during the growth of the animal after metamorphosis, must assure the maintenance of the thin tunic cuticle density and integrity as it represents the primary body surface barrier preventing the mechanical and microbial assaults. Investigations by optical and electron microscopy on tunic samples from young Ciona intestinalis, allowed us to study morphological relationship between the tunic cuticle architecture and g…

The Behaviour of Mistuned Piezoelectric Shunt Systems and Its Estimation

2016

This paper addresses monoharmonic vibration attenuation using piezoelectric transducers shunted with electric impedances consisting of a resistance and an inductance in series. This type of vibration attenuation has several advantages but suffers from problems related to possible mistuning. In fact, when either the mechanical system to be controlled or the shunt electric impedance undergoes a change in their dynamical features, the attenuation performance decreases significantly. This paper describes the influence of biases in the electric impedance parameters on the attenuation provided by the shunt and proposes an approximated model for a rapid prediction of the vibration damping performa…

Les commissions coloniales rattachées au Comité des Travaux historiques et scientifiques

2000

The colonial Commissions connected to the Comité des travaux historiques et scientifiques. In the late nineteenth century, the Comité des travaux historiques et scientifiques became a bigger and bigger research organization, always closely linked to the successive political governments. With each new French conquest, a commission of parisian scientists and local correspondents was created and attached to it, as in 1864, the scientific commission for Mexico, in 1884, the commission for Tunisia, in 1908, the archeological commission for Indochina. The example studied here is that of the commssion for Tunisia, which coordonated researches in archeology and epigraphy in North Africa, thanks to …

Determination of kinetic parameters of redox reactions using CE‐ICP‐MS: A case study for the reduction of Np(V) by hydroxylamine hydrochloride

2018

The rate constants k of the reduction of 5 × 10-5  M Np(V) to Np(IV) by hydroxylamine hydrochloride (HAHCl) in 1 M HCl have been determined by CE-ICP-MS in the temperature range of ϑ = 30-70°C and with varying concentrations of HAHCl from 1 to 7.2 M. The reaction was found to have (pseudo)first order kinetics with respect to HAHCl. The experimental results for k ranged from 0.0029(1) min-1 (ϑ = 40°C, c(HAHCl) = 3 M) to 0.039(7) min-1 (ϑ = 60°C, c(HAHCl) = 7.2 M). The activation energy of the reaction was determined as EA  = (72 ± 10) kJ/mol. These results and a comparison with literature data show that the coupling of CE to ICP-MS provides a powerful analytical tool for the investigation of…

How Electoral Institutions Change the Influence of World Trade Integration on Trade Policies

2014

World integration levels influence opportunity costs of maintaining restrictive national trade policies. In an integrated world, restrictive trade policies are more costly than in a context of low overall levels of world market integration. We argue that policy makers can be expected to react to these varying incentives to liberalize the trade regimes of their countries, yet do so not in a uniform fashion across countries. Rather, the responsiveness to changes in levels of world trade integration is conditional upon the electoral system the country in question employs. This is due to the fact that opportunity cost considerations increase in importance with a) the degree to which policy make…

Contests with size effects

2006

In this paper we analyze the structure of contest equilibria with a variable number of individuals. First we analyze a situation where the total prize depends on the number of agents and where every single agent faces opportunity costs of investing in the contest. Second we analyze a situation where the agents face a trade-off between productive and appropriative investments. Here, the number of agents may also influence the productivity of productive investments. It turns out that both types of contests may lead to opposing results concerning the optimal number of individuals depending on the strength of size effects. Whereas in the former case individual utility is u-shaped when the numbe…
