Summary Fat storing cells (FSC) of rat liver were isolated and kept in culture for up to 2 weeks. Freshly isolated cells and cells in culture were characterized functionally (vitamin A content) and morphologically. Their synthetic capacity for fibronectin was studied quantitatively by ELISA-measurement and qualitatively by biosynthetic labeling, immunoprecipitation and SDS-PAGE analysis. The synthesis product and the kinetics of the synthesis and secretion were compared with those obtained from culture of hepatocytes. The use of a novel monoclonal antibody (mAb) that reacts with (1,6)-beta-glucan has permitted the study of the different covalent linkages between glucan and mannoproteins in the cell wall of Candida albicans. The mAb JRR1 was originally raised by immunization with Zymolyase extracts from C. albicans cell walls, but it soon became apparent that it reacted with a (1,6)-beta-glucan epitope. By using this antibody, we show the existence of glucan-mannoprotein complexes between the (1,6)-beta-glucan epitope recognized by the antibody and cell wall mannoproteins. The topology of the (1,6)-beta-glucan in the cell wall of C. albicans has also been studied.

Cell wall mannoproteins from Saccharomyces cerevisiae are completely or partially incorporated into their final location when N-glycosylation is inhibited by tunicamycin. These include a 90–100 kDa species still containing O-linked oligomannose chains, derived from a N-glycosylated material larger than 120 kDa; and a 30.5 kDa peptide lacking mannose residues, derived from a 33 kDa species. For both species, the growth temperature influences the level of incorporation of the non N-glycosylated molecules. Secretion of the peptides lacking N-linked saccharide chains follows the route defined by sec mutants.

INTRODUCTION: We decided to conduct a study to investigate the presence of cytokines in the albuginea of subjects with Peyronie's disease (PD). Cytokines, as responsible for intercellular communication, maybe involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. The identification of one or more involved cytokines may, in fact, be useful in the pharmacological treatment with biologic drugs that are able to interfere with specific cytokines. The value of T1-weighted sequences after intravenous administration of Gd-DTPA and of T2-weighted sequences was compared in 43 patients suspected of having scrotal abnormalities. T2-weighted sequences gave better demonstration of the tunica albuginea and better contrast between tumor and parenchyma. The two techniques were equally sensitive for demonstrating testicular tumors but orchitis was better demonstrated on the contrast enhanced sequences. Motion artifacts were less marked in the T1-weighted sequences with contrast enhancement. In selected cases, contrast enhancement may be a valuable addition to native protocols. In the present paper an attempt is carried out to revise Ciona intestinalis inflammatory hemocytes according to their morphology as formerly observed by light and electron microscopy, and taking in account recent reports on innate immunity gene expression. We also examine hemocyte morphofunctional aspects as derived from previous papers that refer to the tunic and body wall inflammatory responses challenged by corpusculate or soluble agents. LPS inoculation into the body wall or treating hemocytes in vitro with LPS have also been taken in account. The intermediate filament (IF) proteins Styela C and Styela D from the tunicate Styela (Urochordata) are co-expressed in all epidermal cells and they are thought to behave as type I and type II keratins. These two IF proteins, Styela C and Styela D, were identified in immunoblots of proteins isolated from the tunic of Styela plicata. The occurrence and distribution of these proteins within the tunic of this ascidian was examined by means of immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase techniques, using anti-Styela C and anti-Styela D antibodies. <i>Background/Aims:</i> Restenosis after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) of the internal mammary artery (IMA) grafts is much less pronounced than in other arteries and venous grafts.
