Analysis of the Bloch mode spectra of surface polaritonic crystals in the weak and strong coupling regimes: grating-enhanced transmission at oblique …
2004
The Bloch mode spectrum of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on a finite thickness metal film has been analyzed in the regimes of weak and strong coupling between SPP modes on the opposite film interfaces. The SPP mode dispersion and associated field distributions have been studied. The results have been applied to the description of the light transmission through thick and thin periodically structured metal films at oblique incidence. In contrast to normal incidence, all SPP Bloch modes on a grating structure participate in the resonant photon tunnelling leading to the transmission enhancement. However, at the angle of incidence corresponding to the crossing of different symmetry film SPP …

L'historique du tunnel sous la manche : une brève revue des contributions les plus marquantes
2014
The Channel Tunnel is the largest underground geotechnical project undertaken in Europe during the 20th century. There have been numerous proposals since the early 19th century, especially by Thomé de Gamond (1867), Potier and de Lapparent (1877), and Destombes and Shephard-Thorn (1971). This paper discusses the history of the most important geological investigations for the Channel Tunnel bored in the Lower Cenomanian Chalk Marl.

Collective Modes and Structural Modulation in Ni-Mn-Ga(Co) Martensite Thin Films Probed by Femtosecond Spectroscopy and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy.
2015
International audience; The origin of the martensitic transition in the magnetic shape memory alloy Ni-Mn-Ga has been widely discussed. While several studies suggest it is electronically driven, the adaptive martensite model reproduced the peculiar nonharmonic lattice modulation. We used femtosecond spectroscopy to probe the temperature and doping dependence of collective modes, and scanning tunneling microscopy revealed the corresponding static modulations. We show that the martensitic phase can be described by a complex charge-density wave tuned by magnetic ordering and strong electron-lattice coupling.
Rational backbone redesign of a fructosyl peptide oxidase to widen its active site access tunnel
2020
Fructosyl peptide oxidases (FPOXs) are enzymes currently used in enzymatic assays to measure the concentration of glycated hemoglobin and albumin in blood samples, which serve as biomarkers of diabetes. However, since FPOX are unable to work directly on glycated proteins, current enzymatic assays are based on a preliminary proteolytic digestion of the target proteins. Herein, to improve the speed and costs of the enzymatic assays for diabetes testing, we applied a rational design approach to engineer a novel enzyme with a wider access tunnel to the catalytic site, using a combination of Rosetta design and molecular dynamics simulations. Our final design, L3_35A, shows a significantly wider …

Nano-lithography by electron exposure using an Atomic Force Microscope
1999
Abstract We have used a conductive Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) tip to expose a very thin resist film. An exposing current of low energy electrons was induced from the tip to the substrate by applying a small bias voltage. Uniform resist films as thin as 10 nm were fabricated using the Langmuir–Blodgett technique. To orient the defined pattern and to make electrical connections a special larger scale alignment structure was first defined by conventional electron beam lithography, either directly in the Langmuir–Blodgett resist film or in a separate first lift-off process with a thicker resist. The results from the one resist process gave conducting 50 nm lines with a 60 A thick vacuum depo…
Use of conservative therapy before and after surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome
2021
Abstract Background Conservative therapies are typically offered to individuals who experience mild or intermittent symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) or postoperatively to subjects who have undergone carpal tunnel release. Although long-term studies report mostly positive results for carpal tunnel release, knowledge on the need for conservative treatments following surgery is scarce. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to examine the use of conservative therapies before and after carpal tunnel releasing surgery. Methods Of 528 patients who underwent carpal tunnel release surgery in the study hospital during the study period, 259 provided sufficiently completed questionnair…
