Impact of human activities on the central Mediterranean offshore: Evidence from Hg distribution in box-core sediments from the Ionian Sea

2008

The Palermo and Augusta urban/industrial areas (Sicily) are examples of contaminated coastal environments with a relatively high influx of unregulated industrial and domestic effluents. Three sediment box-cores were collected offshore of these urban/industrial areas in water depths of 60–150mduring two cruises (summers 2003/2004), dated by 210Pb and 137Cs, and analysed for total mercury concentration and total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentration. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages were also examined (in terms of their distribution and morphology) to assess the potential use of benthic foraminifera as bioindicators of pollutant input and environmental change in these Mediterra…

A siliciclastic shallow-marine turbidite on the carbonate shelf of the Ordovician Baltoscandian palaeobasin

2019

A metre-scale thick siltstone–sandstone lobe is described within the Dapingian outer ramp argillaceous limestone facies of the Baltoscandian palaeobasin. This bed is referred to as the Volkhov Oil Collector in previous studies due to its hydrocarbon accumulation potential. It formed on the palaeoslope of the regional Jelgava Depression, which represents an elongated axial region of the deepest part of the Ordovician Baltoscandian sedimentary basin. Sedimentological and petrological analysis of this siliciclastic bed in core sections shows that it was deposited as a result of a single event of turbidite flow. The internal structure of the turbidite bed follows the classical Bouma divisions o…

On the formation of laminated sediments on the continental margin off Pakistan: the effects of sediment provenance and sediment redistribution

2001

Abstract The sedimentary processes and sediment sources contributing to the formation of laminated sediments along the upper slope off Pakistan are unravelled using inorganic bulk sediment geochemistry of 43 surface cores from the Pakistani continental margin and additional geochemical and Pb and Nd-isotope data for different types of layers. An important process everywhere along the margin is redeposition of fluvial-derived detritus from the shelf onto the slope. This process is of considerably higher intensity along the Makran margin than on the Indus margin. Trace element enrichment related to early diagenesis or surface productivity, which is commonly detectable in bulk sediment composi…

A more reliable relation between Angström and Linke atmospheric turbidity parameters

1989

Abstract This work analyses the correlation between Angstrom and Linke atmospheric turbidity parameters (β and T ) which are commonly used in studies about the atmosphere's behaviour since they efficaciously monitor a point turbidity state and model the aerosol attenuation of solar radiation. Starting from the usual linear relation β = a + bT , a more reliable one is here derived by hourly data of three coastal locations with typical Mediterranean meteoclimatic characteristics, for values of the experimental ratios of diffuse and global solar radiation ⩽0.3. The expression found notably differs from the starting one as shown by the time variable.

Fault rate controls on carbonate gravity-flow deposits of the Liassic of Central High Atlas (Morocco).

2013

21 pages; International audience; The aim of this work is to describe and to explore linkages between fault activity and gravity-related sedimentary deposits during the early rifting of a carbonate depositional system. The study area, located at the southern edge of Central High Atlas (Morocco), hosts 900 m thick Liassic gravity-related sedimentary deposits, preserved at the hanging wall of one of the possibly inherited, reactivated Hercynian faults (Tizi n'Firest fault). This study documents gravity-flow deposits constrained by a highresolution biostratigraphic framework (ca. 100 ka). These gravity-flow deposits evolve over time. Unstratified conglomerate beds are limited to the Sinemurian…
