Performance Improvement of a Drag Hydrokinetic Turbine

2021

Hydropower is at present in many locations, among all the other possible renewable energy sources, the best one for net cost per unit power. In contrast to traditional installation, based on water storage in artificial basins, free flow river turbines also provide a very low environmental impact due to their negligible effect on solid transport. Among them, kinetic turbines with vertical axis are very inexpensive and have almost zero impact on fish and local fauna. In application to tidal waves and sea waves, where vertically averaged velocities have alternate direction, a Savonius rotor also has the advantage of being productive during the whole time cycle. In this work, the effect of an u…

Toward farm-level health management of wind turbine systems: status and scope for improvements

2018

An outline of health management for OWFs has been detailed in this chapter with description of various important elements. The need for such farm level management is explained and benefits are discussed. Key gaps to be filled in order to realize such a system are identified. The proposed health management system is mainly based on the existing knowledge of fleet-level management in the aerospace sector. Health management is much broader than CM; there are a number of aspects beyond the prognostics capabilities that are to be designed in order to arrive at a comprehensive maintenance management scheme. A comprehensive maintenance program that is sensitive to the health of the assets and adap…

Musculoskeletal disorders and incongruous postures in workers on ropes: A pilot study

2023

Background: Occupational hazards believed to cause musculoskeletal disorders in rope workers are traditionally associated with maintaining incongruous postures for prolonged periods of time. Design and methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 132 technical operators in the wind energy and acrobatic construction sectors, who work on ropes, analysing the ergonomic characteristics of the environments, the way in which tasks are carried out, the strain perceived by individual workers, and assessing the presence of any musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) by means of an objective examination focused on the anatomical districts that were the object of our study. Results: Analysis of the dat…

Piston driven yaw mechanism

2014

Masteroppgave i mekatronikk MAS 500 Universitetet i Agder 2014 The current thesis presents a piston driven yaw mechanism for wind turbines. Traditionally the yaw mechanismhas been one of the mayor contributors to down time and repair has been costly. The proposed designaims to improve the reliability of the yaw mechanism by reducing the point loads and by using hydrauliccylinders instead electrical motors to generate torque. In addition the design is modular allowing the mechanismto be disassembled and components to be replaced without the requirement of complicated or costlymachinery. The current thesis presents an analysis of the state of the art and discusses concepts which maysolve some…
