Equivalent circuit analysis of solid-rotor induction machines with reference to turbocharger accelerator applications
2006
Theoretical, numerical and experimental studies are described that have been carried out to develop a solid-rotor induction machine design for a particularly demanding application as an accelerator drive for a diesel engine turbocharger. In this application the turbo-motor will be required to operate at speeds of up to 130 000 rpm and in temperatures that can exceed 200°C. The results show that the equivalent circuit gives predictions that are of sufficient precision for design purposes and provides a useful design tool. It is shown that the use of a solid rotor affects the value of the stator leakage reactance and influences the motor performance through this effect as well as by presentin…
Influence of Rotor Suspension Anisotropy on Oil Film Instability
2018
A crucial problem of turbomachinery is the oil film instability on increasing the angular speed, which is correlated with the asymmetry of the bearing stiffness matrix and resembles the hysteretic instability somehow. As a beneficial effect is exerted on the latter by the anisotropy of the support stiffness, some favorable effects have been recently found by the author also for the former, whence a systematic analysis has been undertaken. The instability thresholds may be detected by the usual conventional methods, but a detailed analysis may be carried out by closed-form procedures in the hypothesis of symmetry of the rotor-shaft-support system, which condition approaches the real working …
Application of the image processing methods for analysis of two-phase flow in turbomachinery
2007
The aim of this research is an application of digital image analysis for working out the method, which will allow to evaluate irregularity rate of two-phase flow across various geometry of tube bundle in aspect of the shell - and - tube heat exchanger optimization. Visualization of liquid flow in the shell — side enables an analysis of flow parameters by the use of image processing and analysis methods.
An enhanced, near-term HCPB design as driver blanket for the EU DEMO
2019
The Helium Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) breeding blanket is a candidate as driver blanket for the EU DEMO. The reference design of the HCPB is based on a cooling plate “sandwich” arrangement built in Multi-Module Segments. This architecture significantly improved the tritium breeding performance (TBR = 1.15) and the plant circulating power (≈130 MW) compared to the former ITER-like “beer-box”-like design (TBR<1.10, plant circulating power>200 MW). However, several issues remain with this design, in which (1) the still large power required per He circulator (beyond the state-of-the-art for these components) and (2) the large tritium inventory foreseen in Be have been identified as the most…
