Experimental investigations and numerical modelling of the melting process in the cold crucible

2005

PurposeAims to present recent activities in experimental investigations and numerical modelling of the induction cold crucible installation.Design/methodology/approachTemperature and velocity measurements using thermocouples and electromagnetic velocity probes were performed in aluminium melt which was used as a model melt. Measured temperature field and flow pattern were compared with transient 3D calculations based on large eddy simulation (LES) turbulence modelling scheme. Numerical results are in good coincidence with the experimental data.FindingsThe modelling results show that only 3D transient LES is able to model correctly these heat and mass transfer processes.Originality/valueIt i…

CFD simulations of dense sloid-liquid suspensions in baffled stirred tanks: Prediction of suspension curves

2011

Mixing of solid particles into liquids within contactors mechanically agitated by stirrers is a topic of primary importance for several industrial applications. A great research effort has been devoted to the assessment of the minimum impeller speed (Njs) able to guarantee the suspension of all particles. Conversely, only little attention has been paid so far to the evaluation of the amount of solid particles that are suspended at impeller speeds lower than Njs. In some cases the loss in available interfacial area between particles and liquid could be reasonably counterbalanced by a decreased mechanical power, making it of interest to evaluate the percentage of suspended solids at different…

New Computational Fluid Dynamic Procedure to Estimate Friction and Local Losses in Coextruded Drip Laterals

2007

The design of trickle irrigation systems is crucial to optimize profitability and to warrant high values for the emission uniformity (EU) coefficient. EU depends on variation of the pressure head due to head losses along the lines and elevation changes, as well as the water temperature, and other parameters related to the emitters (manufacturer's coefficient of variation, number of emitters per plants, emitter spacing). Trickle irrigation plants are usually designed using small diameter plastic pipes (polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride). The design problem, therefore, needs to consider head losses along the lines as well as emitter discharge variations due to the manufacturer's variability.…

MORPHODYNAMIC PROCESSES DOWNSTREAM OF MAN-MADE STRUCTURAL INTERVENTIONS: experimental investigation of the role of turbulent flow structures in the p…

2012

Abstract Experimental program was conducted to analyze scour – caused by a horizontal jet downstream of a rigid bed – and the flow velocity and turbulence characteristics within the scour hole. The experimental program was motivated by the fact that the knowledge of flow field, including turbulent characteristics, is fundamental to correctly simulate the bed-load transport and the temporal evolution of the scour hole and, thus, to define protective measures of scouring. In this paper some results of experiments – carried out to understand the role of flow turbulence in the prediction of scouring process and sediment movement – are reported. The analysis is conducted on the basis of detailed…

APPLICATION OF MATHEMATICAL MODELS FOR THE SIMULATION OF THERMAL COMFORT CONDITIONS IN A LIVING ROOM

2005

The paper deals with the distributions of temperature and averaged turbulent airflows in living rooms in 2D and 3D approximations using Ansys/Flotran and Ansys/CFX software respectively. The distributions are calculated depending on the placement and temperature of heaters, heat transfer coefficients of the building structures and ventilation conditions. The authors analyse the influence of these factors on the air circulation and the related heat flows through building structures. The thermal balance of a room and its dependence on various external factors is also considered. As thermal comfort conditions’ parameters are analysed, the airflow velocities and indoor temperatures with its gra…

Computational fluid dynamics and its application to transport processes

2007

Fluid transport behaviour is of great importance within the chemical process industry and in biotechnology. The complexity of this behaviour, reflected in the nature of the fundamental partial differential equations which describe it analytically, means that it has to be treated by numerical methods. In this paper the basic equations are given, and the approaches necessary to treat laminar and turbulent flows are carefully explained. As digital computers have increased in size, so has the comprehensiveness of the problems which can be treated, and the development of typical computer programs is described. Problems of accuracy and experimental validation are also surveyed, and it is shown th…

Impact of wind speed on ventilation performance within a container installed with photovoltaic inverter

2017

Abstract PV inverter needs proper ventilation for reducing the heat dissipation of the electronic components. In this work, a container installed with PV inverter is considered with different configurations of cooling channels within the container for ventilation analysis. Typically, high capacity PV inverters are installed inside the container and therefore inverters, are not experiencing external wind effects and it depends on the configuration of cooling channels. In this work, the main cooling channel is located at the top of the inverter; inlet and outlet ventilation holes are located on the side of cross ventilation. They help in analyzing the cooling design, dependent on site specifi…

Fire safety investigation for road tunnel ventilation systems – An overview

2014

Abstract In recent years, research activities about fire events in tunnel have received a significant impulse, especially after several accidents. The Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) has a fundamental role about. Researchers have spent resources on various topics involving numerical tools as the performance of a ventilation system, the influence of this on the air flow motion in the tunnel or the methods for fire schematization, fire-induced smoke characterization, turbulence models, etc. One of the main phenomena to consider for the safety when a fire occurs in a tunnel is the possibility of the fire-induced smoke to rise the tunnel (backlayering). A well-designed ventilation system shal…

Prediction of flow fields in a dual-impeller stirred vessel

1999

Numerical simulations were connected for the flow field in a baffled tank stirred by a dual Rushton impeller. For this geometry, LDV measurements show a characteristic dependence of the flow patterns upon the position of the impellers. Two advanced modeling approaches were tested. In the first, the vessel was divided info two concentric blocks, coupled by, a sliding grin technique, and simulations were conducted in time-dependent mode. In the second approach, the vessel was modeled as two partially over-lapping I regions, the inner one rotating with the impeller and rite outer one stationary simulations were run in steady-state mode for each of the two regions, while information was iterati…
