Smart district energy optimization of flexible energy units for the integration of local energy storage
2017
Several changes are involving electrical power systems, especially distribution networks. For this reason, the actors in charge of managing and operating reliably these grids are facing many technical issues regarding demand and supply balancing, Renewable Energy Sources and Electric Vehicles integration, peak load shaving, etc. In this context, many energy actions have been implemented for providing services to the power system managers by means of prosumers' demand and/or supply flexibility. This study reports the development of a centralized energy management solution for smart grids equipped with local storage devices, RES, consumers and other energy facilities in a district context. Th…
On the hazardous situations due to the presence of HV/MV substations in urban areas
2017
The paper focuses on the hazardous situations that can rise in urban areas in case of earth fault inside a High Voltage/Medium Voltage station. IEEE and IEC/EN Standards and technical documents are examined and discussed, in order to propose some practical guidelines for a safe integration of such installations in contexts characterized by the presence of low voltage systems and not trained persons.
Innovative algorithms for the management of combined RES-BESS systems
2017
The issue of the optimal management of the available energy resources also at end-user level is getting more and more attention. The paper deals with the definition of innovative algorithms for managing electrical storage systems in hybrid photovoltaic and wind plants, also taking into account different pricing periods and a grid emergency condition in which the Utility can request an injection of power by the end-user. Application examples for explaining the operation of the algorithms are presented.
A Dempster-Shafer Theory-based approach to the Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) under epistemic uncertainty: application to the…
2017
Abstract Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a safety and reliability analysis tool widely used for the identification of system/process potential failures, their causes and consequences. When aimed at the failure modes prioritization, FMEA is named Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA). In the latter case, failure modes are commonly prioritized by means of the Risk Priority Number (RPN) that has been widely criticized to have several shortcomings. Firstly, in the presence of multiple experts supplying different and uncertain judgments on risk parameters, RPN is not able to deal with such a kind of information. Therefore, the present paper proposes the Dempster-Shaf…
Using FEM simulation to predict structural performances of a sailing dinghy
2017
The use of finite element method (FEM) tools is proposed to investigate the structural response of an eco-sustainable sailing yacht to different loading conditions, typical of those acting during regattas. The boat is, in particular, a 4.60 m dinghy with the hull and the deck made of an hybrid flaxâcork sandwich and internal reinforcements made of marine plywood. A preliminary activity has consisted in the refitting of an existing model in order to reduce the hull weight and to improve performances during manoeuvrings. These tasks have been interactively simulated in the virtual environment of the boat CAD model, where longitudinal and transversal reinforcements were enlightened and the m…
FIELD TESTING OF THE SMBF FLUME
2007
At first, in this paper the stage-discharge relationship of a new flume, originally proposed by Samani and Magallanez, for measuring flow discharge in open channels is reviewed. The flume is obtained inserting two semicylinders in a rectangular cross-section. Then, the results of some experimental runs carried out using horizontal flumes characterized by different values of the contraction ratio (ranging from 0.17 to 0.81) are used for determining the two coefficients of the power stage-discharge equation. Finally, the stage-discharge equation is tested using flow measurements carried out, in the period December 2004 – March 2006 in the Sicilian experimental SPA1 and SPA2 basins. Field test…
The effect of manufacturing tolerances on a tubular linear ferrite motor
2015
This study presents a numerical and experimental study on the effect of permanent magnet tolerances on the performances of a Tubular Linear Ferrite Motor. The statistical distribution of the magnetic characteristic of a set of commercial magnets is obtained experimentally while the performances of a the tubular motor are numerically evaluated. The performances that have been considered are: cogging force, end effect force and generated thrust. It has been shown that: 1)the statistical variability of the magnets modifies the time behavior of the cogging force; 2)the value of both the end effect cogging force and the generated thrust are directly linked to the values of then remanence field o…
An Investigation of the Cutting Process for Chip Breaking Monitoring in Turning of Steels
1998
This paper presents some results of an experimental study on chip breaking monitoring when turning steels with chip forming inserts. In the first part of this study the recognition of chip forms by means of cutting force analysis in the frequency domain is described. Generally, the present work is concerned with the use of the interface control factor for determining the transition from unacceptable chip forms to the chip breaking. For this purpose experiments under approximately orthogonal machining conditions including measuring the shear strain, the cutting energy and the average interface temperature are carried out. The obtained results confirmed that the initiation of acceptable chip …
Multi-objective optimized management of electrical energy storage systems in an islanded network with renewable energy sources under different design…
2014
The subject addressed in this paper is the definition of some strategies for the design and the optimaized management of EES (Electrical Energy Storage) systems, for an existing islanded distribution network supplying the Island of Pantelleria (Italy) in the Mediterranean Sea. In the paper the authors have drawn interesting conclusions through the application of an efficient MO (multi-objective) optimization algorithm, the NSGA-II, minimizing the energy losses in the grid, the total electricity generation cost and the greenhouse gas emissions. The results obtained for different installation scenarios of the EES are presented and discussed, putting into evidence the technical, environmental …
Fatigue life under non-Gaussian random loading from various models
2004
Fatigue test results on the 10HNAP steel under constant amplitude and random loading with non-Gaussian probability distribution function, zero mean value and wide-band frequency spectrum have been used to compare the life time estimation of the models proposed by Bannantine, Fatemi–Socie, Socie, Wang–Brown, Morel and Łagoda–Macha. Except the Morel proposal which accumulates damage step by step with a proper ethodology, all the other models use a cycle counting method. The rainflow algorithm is used to extract cycles from random histories of damage parameters in time domain. In the last model, where a strain energy density parameter is employed, additionally spectral method is evaluated for …
