Quick and dirty but still pretty good: a review of new descriptive methods in food science
2012
Summary For food scientists and industrials, descriptive profiling is an essential tool that involves the evaluation of both the qualitative and quantitative sensory characteristics of a product by a panel. Recently, in response to industrial demands to develop faster and more cost-effective methods of descriptive analysis, several methods have been offered as alternatives to conventional profiling. These methods can be classified in three families: (i) verbal-based methods (flash profile and check-all-that-apply), (ii) similarity-based methods (free sorting task and projective mapping aka Napping®) and (iii) reference-based methods (polarised sensory positioning and pivot profile). We succ…
The effect of inventory record inaccuracy in information exchange supply chains
2015
Abstract The goal of this paper is to quantify the impact of Inventory Record Inaccuracy on the dynamics of collaborative supply chains, both in terms of operational performance (i.e. order and inventory stability), and customer service level. To do so, we model an Information Exchange Supply Chain under shrinkage errors in the inventory item recording activity of their nodes, present the mathematical formulation of such supply chain model, and conduct a numerical simulation assuming different levels of errors. Results clearly show that Inventory Record Inaccuracy strongly compromises supply chain stability, particularly when moving upwards in the supply chain. Important managerial insights…

[EN] This article describes an innovative strategy aimed at teaching the subject “Political Economy”, in the University Degree in Political Science and Public Administration. Although the central methodology revolves mainly around “gamification”, it also requires activities as traditional as “taking notes” or “paying attention during class”. In addition, it provides the added value of demanding to expand and structure the information collected on the basis of structuring descriptors (glossary). Through a RPG –economic and political espionage at Bandung Conference– students collect, complete and organize the information offered by the teacher and return it through oral communications before …
Parameter identification of linear induction motor model in extended range of operation by means of input-output data
2012
This paper proposes a technique for the off-line estimation of the electrical parameters of the equivalent circuit of linear induction machines (LIM), taking into consideration the end effects, and focuses on the application of an algorithm based on the minimization of a suitable cost function involving the differences of measured and computed by simulation inductor current components. This method exploits an entire start-up transient of the LIM to estimate all the 4 electrical parameters of the machine (Rs, L s, σ Ls, Tr). It proposes also a set of tests to be made to estimate the variation of the magnetic parameters of the LIM versus the magnetizing current as well as the magnetizing curv…
The prometeia model for managing insurance policies with guarantees
2008
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the development of a scenario-based optimization model for asset and liability management for the participating policies with guarantees and bonus provisions offered by Italian insurers. The changing landscape of the financial services in Italy sets the backdrop for the development of this system which was the result of a multi-year collaborative effort between academic researchers, the research staff at Prometeia in Bologna, and end-users from diverse Italian insurers. It also presents and discusses the model and its key feature, and introduces several extensions. The resulting system allows the analysis of the tradeoffs facing an insurance firm in …

Exchange Rate and Interest-Rate Driven Competitive Advantages in the EMU
2002
Real exchange and interest rates may still fluctuate inside the EMU and give rise to changes in competitiveness. We find, in contrast to what is generally expected, no convergence in these variables after the introduction of the euro. On the contrary, a divergence is found that is extraordinary when compared to the preceding 40 years. The magnitude of the divergence should urge on a wave of restructuring in the EMU, conditioned upon adequate policy responses. The worst-case scenario involves a flight to structural support and protectionism, challenging the whole idea of the EMU.
Entry mode choice in the internationalisation of the hotel industry: a holistic approach
2011
This paper empirically investigates the entry mode choice in the hotel industry. Based on more than 1200 entry decisions, which covers practically all operations carried out by the majority of Spanish hotel chains up to 2009, the study attempts to (a) identify the factors that influence the mode choice of incorporating each new hotel within the chain and (b) to reflect the specific nature of the hotel industry with regard to the results obtained from samples of other industries. The results suggest the importance of considering a holistic approach that facilitates the understanding of a complex phenomenon which is not always explained just by efficiency considerations. Additionally, the res…
Service Regulations, Input Prices and Export Volumes: Evidence from a Panel of Manufacturing Firms
2017
Using a panel of firm‐level data from Spanish manufacturers, this study shows that better service regulation reduces the price of intermediate inputs paid by downstream firms. The beneficial cost effects of services reforms extend to both large and small‐to‐medium sized corporations (SME’s), but the former tend to enjoy greater gains. This feature also manifests itself in international markets. We find evidence of an input cost channel through which service regulations affect the volume of exports of large manufacturers, while the evidence of such a channel is weaker for SME’s. Our estimates indicate that, from 1991 to 2007, large firms increased their volume of exports by an average of 20 …
