Particle suspension in top-covered unbaffled tanks

2010

Abstract Unbaffled stirred tanks are seldom employed in the process industry as they are considered poorer mixers than baffled vessels. However, they may be expected to provide significant advantages in a wide range of applications (e.g. crystallization, food and pharmaceutical processes, etc.), where the presence of baffles is often undesirable. In the present work solid–liquid suspension in an unbaffled stirred tank is investigated. The tank was equipped with a top-cover in order to avoid vortex formation. A novel experimental method (the “steady cone radius method”, SCRM) is proposed to determine experimentally the minimum impeller speed at which solids are completely suspended. Experime…

WEAR PERFORMANCE OF CERAMIC CUTTING-TOOL MATERIALS WHEN CUTTING STEEL

1991

Abstract Some test cycles have been carried out in continuous cutting conditions, employing cutting parameters (feed, depth of cut and cutting speed) chosen following experimental planes and suitable test fields. The wear tests have been carried out on AISI 1040 steel with cutting speeds from 5m/sec to 11m/sec. The silicon nitride, sintered carbide, cubic boron nitride and alumina reinforced with SiC whiskers inserts, have shown, at each assigned cutting parameter, poor wear resistance when cutting steel. Alumina and alumina in submicron grain, which has been toughened by ZrO2 phase transformation, and the oxide-based alumina, have been the better wear resistance. The mixed based alumina ha…

Electropolishing of CuZn brasses and 316L stainless steels: Influence of alloy composition or preparation process (ALM vs. standard method)

2016

International audience; In the present paper, electropolishing behavior of different brass alloys (CuZn39Pb2, CuZn42) in phosphoric acid is studied to observe the impact of alloying elements on polishing quality. In the same way, the influence of the manufacturing process is also evaluated through the comparison of a “standard” stainless steel and a stainless steel prepared by Additive Laser Manufacturing (ALM). An electrochemical study was first performed to determine the best treatment conditions for each material/electrolyte pair and to study the electropolishing mechanism and its kinetic dependence on diffusion. Metallic samples are fully characterized before and after electropolishing …

Composite layer-based analytical models for tool–chip interface temperatures in machining medium carbon steels with multi-layer coated cutting tools

2006

Abstract This investigation is devoted to the thermal problems in dry orthogonal turning of a C45 medium carbon steel with natural contact tools treated with multi-layer coatings with an intermediate Al 2 O 3 layer. New hybrid analytical models for estimating heat partition to the chip and the tool–chip interface temperatures were proposed. Furthermore, the physics-based modelling concept, which applies composite layer approach was developed to estimate the average and maximum steady-state tool–chip interface temperatures in orthogonal turning. The model predictions were compared to appropriate experimental process data using natural tool-work thermocouples and other simulated and measured …

Implementation of eco-sustainable biocomposite materials reinforced by optimized agave fibers

2018

Abstract Although several works have recently been published in literature about biocomposites, i.e. about composites with polymeric matrix reinforced by natural fibers, only a few articles have been devoted to the implementation of high performance biocomposites for structural and semi-structural applications. The present study aims to give a contribution by considering biocomposites obtained by using an eco-friendly partially bio-based epoxy (green epoxy) and sisal (agave sisalana fibers) obtained by a proper optimization process. Through a systematic experimental analysis, three different types of biocomposites obtained with a suitable manufacturing process, such as random short fiber bi…

The effect of alkaline treatment on mechanical properties of kenaf fibers and their epoxy composites

2015

Abstract In this work, kenaf fibers were pre-treated in a NaOH solution (6% in weight) at room temperature for two different periods (48 and 144 h). The chemical treatment of kenaf fibers for 48 h allowed to clean their surface removing each impurity whereas 144 h of immersion time had detrimental effect on the fibers surface and, consequently, on their mechanical properties. Untreated and NaOH treated kenaf fibers (i.e. for 48 h) were also used as reinforcing agent of epoxy resin composites. The effect of the stacking sequence (i.e. using unidirectional long fibers or randomly oriented short fibers) and the chemical treatment on the static mechanical properties was evaluated showing that t…

A model of biomass char gasification describing the change in catalytic activity of ash

2012

A comprehensive description of catalytic effects during char gasification under various conditions relevant to biomass gasification was made. A three-parallel reaction model was proposed to describe the dynamic change in catalytic activity of ash during gasification of biomass char particles. Three different regimes of conversion were identified by analyzing char reactivity experiments conducted in a vertical TGA with nine biomasses under a wide range of operating conditions (temperature: 1023–1123 K, pressure: 0.1–3.0 MPa and gasification mixtures of CO2–CO–H2O–H2): (1) catalytic char gasification with deactivation of catalyst, (2) non-catalytic char gasification, and (3) catalytic char ga…

Manufacture of marine composite sandwich structures

2016

Abstract The aim of this chapter is to present the main processes of manufacture of composite sandwich structures used in marine applications. In the introduction, sandwich structure classification and properties and advantages/disadvantages in their uses are presented. In the second and third section, the main used technologies to made sandwich are, respectively, described and compared. Then, the goodness of these techniques is evidenced with the discussion of some experimental results obtained by the authors in their studies. The last section concludes with a thorough list of the future trends.

Corrosion of stainless steel in food and pharmaceutical industry

2021

Abstract Stainless steels are widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industry because of their high corrosion resistance and superior mechanical properties. These features are crucial because produced foodstuffs and drugs must comply with high purity and quality standards. Just a proper selection of stainless steel grade can prevent corrosion phenomena that can be detrimental to the whole manufacturing process. Food/drugs production process phases will be here analyzed and discussed with a particular emphasis on the possible corrosion mechanism of stainless steels in those particular operating conditions. Recent advances on the methods to assess corrosion of stainless steels in food and…

Characterization of used mineral oil condition by spectroscopic techniques

2004

Optical absorption, fluorescence, and quantitative 13C NMR spectroscopy have been used to study the degradation of mineral gearbox oil. Samples of used oil were collected from field service. Measured absorption, fluorescence, and quantitative 13C NMR spectra of used oils show characteristic changes from the spectra of a fresh oil sample. A clearly observable, approximately 20-nm blueshift of the fluorescence emission occurs during the early stages of oil use and correlates with changes in intensity of some specific 13C NMR resonance lines. These changes correlate with oil age because of the connection between the blueshift and breaking of the larger conjugated hydrocarbons of oil as a resul…
