An Innovative Friction Stir Welding Based Technique to Produce Dissimilar Light Alloys to Thermoplastic Matrix Composite Joints
2016
Abstract Aluminum sheets can be joined to composite materials with different techniques. Each of them has advantages and weak points over the others. In literature, new techniques and patents are continuously developed to overcome these difficulties. In the paper a new Friction Stir Welding based approach is proposed to mechanically join AA6082-T6 to self-reinforced polypropylene. The aluminum sheet is pre-holed along both the sides of the weld line. A pinless tool generates the heat and pressure needed to activate back-extrusion of the composite. Joints have been produced with varying hole diameter and pitch. The mechanical resistance of the joint has been evaluated and the different failu…
Polymer Solidification under Pressure and High Cooling Rates
2000
Abstract Polymer solidification under processing conditions is a complex phenomenon in which the kinetics of flow, high thermal gradients and high pressures determine the product morphology. The study of polymer structure formed under pressure has been mainly made using conventional techniques such as dilatometry and differential scanning calorimetry under isothermal conditions or non isothermal conditions but at cooling rates several orders of magnitude lower than those experienced in industrial processes. A new equipment has been recently developed and improved to study the crystallization of polypropylene when subjected to pressure and cooled rapidly. An experimental apparatus essentiall…
Simple and Flexible Power Loss Minimizer With Low-Cost MCU Implementation for High-Efficiency Three-Phase Induction Motor Drives
2021
This paper presents a simple, practical and low-cost implementation of a power losses minimization algorithm for three-phase induction motors taking also into account both iron core losses and magnetic saturation. The algorithm evaluates, in real-time, the optimal direct axis magnetizing flux component for efficiency enhancement of the drive. A further advantage of the proposed technique is represented by a flexible and low-cost implementation by means of an ATMEL ATSAM3X8E microcontroller. The power loss minimization algorithm is tested preliminarily by means of several simulations, then, experimentally validated by applying the proposed control strategy on a 5.5 kW Field Oriented Control …
Evaluation of carotenoids and furosine content in air dried carrots and parsnips pre-treated with pulsed electric field (PEF)
2019
Carrot and parsnip slices were subjected to hot drying at 50, 60 and 70 °C with or without pulsed electric field (PEF) pre-treatment at 0.9 kV/cm and 1000 and 10,000 pulses. The effect of drying on processed samples was assessed by analysis of carotenoids, the furosine value, total phenols and the Whiteness Index (WI). PEF pre-treatment is effective in reducing drying times, but the degree of cellular breakdown makes the compounds more susceptible to chemical and enzymatic reactions. In our condition PEF pre-treatment increased the carotenoid degradation and promoted the Maillard reaction above all at the highest temperature of 70 °C. The assessment of carotenoid stability, together with th…

Struvite precipitation assessment in anaerobic digestion processes
2008
Struvite precipitation causes important operational problems during the sludge treatment process, especially when EBPR sludge is treated. Predicting struvite formation is critical to be able to design process alternative that best minimises struvite precipitation. With this aim, phosphorus precipitation in an anaerobic digestion pilot plant was studied using experimental data and mass balance analysis. The results obtained showed significant phosphorus precipitation as struvite (58% of the fixed phosphorus) and a low precipitation of calcium phosphates (15%), forming mainly hydroxyapatite (HAP). The rest of the phosphorus fixed in the digester (27%) was attributed to adsorption processes on…
Grapefruit essential oils inhibit quorum sensing of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
2019
Citrus essential oils are used in food to confer flavor and aromas. The citrus essential oils have been granted as GRAS and could be used as antimicrobial additives to control bacterial quorum sensing from potential food bacterial pathogens. The chemical composition and inhibitory activity of Citrus paradisi (grapefruit) essential oils obtained by cold-pressed method (EOP) and cold-pressed method followed by steam distillation, against Pseudomonas aeruginosa were determined . The GC-MS analyses of the oil indicated the amount of the essential oil components was highest with D-limonene in both cases. However, the extraction method modified the chemical composition. EOP had higher amount of …
Essential oils as natural preservatives for bakery products: Understanding the mechanisms of action, recent findings, and applications
2018
Bakery products, as an important part of a healthy diet, are characterized by their limited shelf-life. Microbiological spoilage of these products not only affects the quality characteristics and result in the economic loss but also threatens consumer's health. Incorporation of chemical preservatives, as one of the most conventional preserving techniques, lost its popularity due to the increasing consumer's health awareness. Therefore, the bakery industry is seeking alternatives to harmful antimicrobial agents that can be accepted by health-conscious customers. In this regard, essential oils have been previously used as either a part of product ingredient or a part of the packaging system. …
“Ice” juice from apples obtained by pressing at subzero temperatures of apples pretreated by pulsed electric fields
2016
Abstract The impact of apple pretreatment by pulsed electric field (PEF) on juice extraction using the freezing-assisted pressing was studied. Apple discs were PEF pretreated at electric field strength of E = 800 V/cm and then air blast frozen inside the freezer (− 40 °C). Then, pressing experiments in a laboratory-pressing chamber (2–5 bars) were started at sub-zero temperature (− 5 °C). Time evolution of juice yield and its nutritional qualities were compared for PEF and untreated apple samples. High improvements of juice yield were obtained for freeze-thawed (FT) and PEF + FT samples. The combination of PEF + pressing (5 bar) at sub-zero temperature gave optimum results for juice extrac…
Forming pressure dependence of the ferroelectric domain structure in green barium titanate pellets
1995
Abstract Modifications of the X-ray diffraction line profiles by die pressing of fine grained powders of barium titanate have been studied. Two main parameters have been considered: the forming pressure and the mechanical characteristics of the binder. The higher the forming pressure, the greater the modifications of the line profiles. Furthermore, the phenomena seems to be related to pressing only; no significant effect related to the nature of the binder has been shown. The modifications of the diffraction line profiles are interpreted by considering a reduction of the size of the ferroelectric domains during pressing. In order to confirm this interpretation, the behaviour of the domain s…
