New descent rules for solving the linear semi-infinite programming problem

1994

The algorithm described in this paper approaches the optimal solution of a continuous semi-infinite linear programming problem through a sequence of basic feasible solutions. The descent rules that we present for the improvement step are quite different when one deals with non-degenerate or degenerate extreme points. For the non-degenerate case we use a simplex-type approach, and for the other case a search direction scheme is applied. Some numerical examples illustrating the method are given.

Self-organizing maps could improve the classification of Spanish mutual funds

In this paper, we apply nonlinear techniques (Self-Organizing Maps, k-nearest neighbors and the k-means algorithm) to evaluate the official Spanish mutual funds classification. The methodology that we propose allows us to identify which mutual funds are misclassified in the sense that they have historical performances which do not conform to the investment objectives established in their official category. According to this, we conclude that, on average, over 40% of mutual funds could be misclassified. Previous studies showed that integrating a power velocity profile, deduced applying dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity condition, the flow resistance equation for open channel flow can be obtained. Summary The automatic computer aided planning and design of cold forming processes includes several phases, among which the most important are the optimal choice of the forming operations sequence and, for each operation, the determination of the more suitable operating parameters. With this aim the Authors propose an integrated approach based on the preliminary choice of some feasible forming sequences, carried out by means of a knowledge-based system, and on the subsequent determination of the optimal one employing a finite element simulation of the process.
