A new eco-friendly chemical treatment of natural fibres: Effect of sodium bicarbonate on properties of sisal fibre and its epoxy composites
2016
Abstract Several researchers have shown how sisal fibres possess remarkable tensile properties that yield them good candidates as reinforcement in biocomposite materials. This work aims to evaluate the effect of an eco-friendly and cost effective surface treatment method based on the use of commercial sodium bicarbonate (i.e. baking soda) on properties of sisal fibre and its epoxy composites. In particular, raw sisal fibres were treated with a 10%w/w of sodium bicarbonate solution for different periods (24, 120 and 240 h), at room temperature. Changes occurring in sisal fibres were characterized through scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric…
Low Temperature H2S Removal with Metal-Doped Nanostructure ZnO Sorbents: Study of the Origin of Enhanced Reactivity in Cu-Containing Materials
2011
Sulfidation of pure and metal-doped ZnO nanostructure sorbents (M0.03Zn0.97O, M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) was studied in order to clarify the effect of metal on the transformation kinetics at 200−350 °C. The solids were prepared by coprecipitation from metal nitrate solution followed by calcination at 400 °C. Reaction with H2S was studied by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) using a gas mixture containing 0.2 vol % H2S in equimolar H2−N2. It was found that at 350 °C the TGA sulfidation profiles of all studied samples are similar, with the interface reaction being the main rate-determining step. After lowering the temperature to 250 °C the transformation of Cu0.03Zn0.97O continues to be controlled …
The Intangible Assets Advantages in the Machine Vision Inspection of Thermoplastic Materials
2017
Abstract Innovation is not a simple concept but is the main source of success. It is more important to have the right people and mindsets in place than to have a perfectly crafted plan in order to make the most out of an idea or business. The aim of this paper is to emphasize the importance of intangible assets when it comes to machine vision inspection of thermoplastic materials pointing out some aspects related to knowledge based assets and their need for a success idea to be developed in a successful product.
“The tale of the three little tits”: Different nest building solutions under the same environmental pressures
2020
Evolutionary selection pressures, and species-specific ecology and behavior, promote a great variability in the size and composition of nests. However, it would be expected that phylogenetically close species, with similar ecological needs, breeding at the same time in the same place, would also build similar nests. In contrast with this, previous studies have found differences in nest mass and composition among closely related sympatric species. These differences have been attributed to small differences in body size (smaller species building larger and/or more insulated nests), or to the different ways in which species perceive the environment (e.g. perceived predation risk). In this stud…
Mechanical and microstructural characterization of titanium gr.5 parts produced by different manufacturing routes
2022
Abstract In recent years, the aircraft industry has shifted its preference for metal parts to titanium and its alloys, such as the high-strength Titanium Grade5 alloy. Because of Titanium Grade 5 limited formability at ambient temperature, forming operations on this material require high temperatures. In these conditions, a peculiar microstructure evolves as a result of the heating and deformation cycles, which has a significant impact on formability and product quality. On the other hand, additive manufacturing technologies, as selective laser melting and electron beam melting, are increasingly being used and are replacing more traditional approaches such as machining and forging. Fundamen…
Stability analysis of logistics networks with time-delays
2012
Logistics network represents a complex system where different elements that are logistic locations interact with each other. This interaction contains delays caused by time needed for delivery of the material. In this paper, we study local input-to-state stability of such logistics networks. Their behaviour is described by a functional differential equation with a constant time-delay. An appropriate Lyapunov–Razumikhin function and the small gain condition are utilized to establish some conditions for stability analysis of the network under consideration. Our stability conditions for the logistics network are based on the information about the interconnection properties between logistic loc…
Non-fragile H ∞ control for switched stochastic delay systems with application to water quality process
2013
SUMMARY In this paper, the problem of non-fragile observer-based H ∞ control for discrete-time switched delay systems is investigated. Both data missing and time delays are taken into account in the links from sensors to observers and from controllers to actuators. Because data missing satisfies the Bernoulli distribution, such problem is transformed into an H ∞ control problem for stochastic switched delay systems. Average dwell time approach is used to obtain sufficient conditions on the solvability of such problems. A numerical example and a real example for water quality control are provided to illustrate the effectiveness and potential applications of the proposed techniques. Copyrig…

A genetic algorithm for combined topology and shape optimisations
2003
A method to find optimal topology and shape of structures is presented. With the first the optimal distribution of an assigned mass is found using an approach based on homogenisation theory, that seeks in which elements of a meshed domain it is present mass; with the second the discontinuous boundaries are smoothed. The problem of the optimal topology search has an ON/OFF nature and has suggested the employment of genetic algorithms. Thus in this paper a genetic algorithm has been developed, which uses as design variables, in the topology optimisation, the relative densities (with respect to effective material density) 0 or 1 of each element of the structure and, in the shape one, the coord…
Effect of uniaxial deformation on the optical scattering losses of a semicrystalline fluorocopolymer.
1997
Both small- and wide-angle light scattering as well as transmission measurements have been used to investigate the optical scattering losses of a vinylidene difluoride–tetrafluoroethylene–hexafluoropropylene copolymer crystallized from the melt. The main origin of the scattering loss is the wide-angle light scattering from the spherulitic superstructure. Uniaxial deformation transforms this structure into a fiber morphology. The attenuation of fibers has been measured for light propagating both parallel and perpendicular to the orientation axis. For both directions, the attenuation decreases with increasing draw ratio. Annealing of the fibers while keeping their ends fixed is an effective m…
